People with Mental Illness: Use Patterns with High Energy Drinks and Drugs Prof. Shirley Smoyak, Rutgers University USA 21 ST International NPNR Conference September 2015 Manchester Conference Centre Manchester UK

Caffeine in coffee is 10mg/oz., depending on how it s brewed

Caffeine in high energy drinks (HED) varies up to 16 mg/oz. High energy drinks are often found alongside caffeinated cola and other, non-caffeinated carbonated beverages

The Energy Drink Market: Youth Driven One in three teens use energy drinks compared to one in ten adults. Youth consumption is rapidly increasing. Energy drinks help teens augment their rebellious image legally.

Popular Energy Drinks and Caffeine Content

How many milligrams of caffeine per ounce in coffee, tea or cola are regulated by the FDA?

Caffeine Intake mostly from soda, but energy drinks are becoming popular Main active ingredient in energy drinks mg per can/bottle (3 times the concentration in cola drinks; can be 5 times greater in energy shots ) Heavy caffeine consumption (such as with energy drinks) is associated with seizures, mania, stroke, sudden death.

Energy drinks users have been found to be more likely to initiate use of prescription drugs May be a gateway for other forms of drug abuse and dependence Danger of mixing energy drinks and alcohol What happens if the receptors and neurotransmitters that are responsible for arousal, learning, motivation, aggression, and social inhibition are chronically stimulated or blocked by caffeine and alcohol?

What is Wide Awake Drunk? Enormous energy, but actually drunk Having ingested high energy drinks and blood alcohol level is at.08

Public Health Implications Marketing and product design promotes youth consumption and risk taking Alcohol + Caffeine = Wide awake drunk Caffeine masks alcohol s intoxicating effects, promotes risk taking Significant increase of caffeine-related cases in American emergency rooms over the past two years

Public Health Implications, cont. Marketed as a health supplement People often do not know the risks of ingesting high concentrations of caffeine Possibility of interaction with medications, most notably, anti-psychotics, anti-depressants, antianxiety

Collaborative Support Programs of New Jersey, Inc.
