It can be used to help students memorize any facts while playing a game. 1+ class period Classroom The objective of this activity is to motivate students to memorize facts by playing a game using any study guide. Copy of worksheet and game instructions, calculator, and pencil EL.04.WR.29 Use note-taking skills EL.06.RE.20 Clarify understanding of informational texts by creating simple outlines, graphic organizers, diagrams, logical notes, or summaries. MA.05.SP.01 Compare two related sets of data using measures of center (mean, median, and mode) and spread (range). Model for the students note taking skills by reading an informational text along with the students. Instruct the class to copy as you go so each student has completed notes when the selection is finished. Explain that they will be using these note taking skills on their own without assistance in the future and make clear the importance of being able to identify important information in a selection. Let the students know that for this lesson they will be assessed on their handwriting being legible, their notes being complete and their appropriate participation in the game. Explain that although spelling is always important it is not the focus of note taking and because of that time should not be spent on conventions. Start by identifying the main idea of the selection. Label your sheet of notes with the main idea. Point out the first subtopic and take notes illustrating the supporting ideas. Model for one entire selection demonstrating how to identify key information such as headings and bolded words. Each student should now have a teacher led example of notes taken from informational text that they can use.

2 For more advanced students you can teach abbreviations for common words, symbols, skipping lines when subject changes so there is room to add any information missed, check classmates notes to verify essential information was covered, and rereading notes to make sure they make sense are some examples of how to expand on the note taking lesson. These notes are now ready to use to play the Deal or No Deal game. (The following instructions are on the game sheet) In this adapted version there are only 12 cases valued at $1, $10, $50, $100, $500, $1,000, $,5000, $10,000, $100,000, $200,000, $500,000 and $1,000,000 Have the students get into groups of two in whatever way suits your classroom. Give each student a set of 12 cases. Instruct the students to cut the cases out and write each of the above dollar amounts on the back of the cases. Do not repeat values. Once the value is written, instruct the students to turn them face up and mix them around. Once mixed they will label each case front with a number starting at 1 and ending at 12. Again there can be no repeats. These cases will be used for their partners game so there is no possibility of accidently seeing the values. (The instructions are also on the sheet of cases) If you want to make a long lasting set of cases I have had success laminating folded cases with a dollar amount set inside each case but missing the case number. In doing so, each time I play I can write new case numbers with a wet erase marker and the game is never the same. How to play 1. Pick the case you think has the $1,000,000 Set it aside and DO NOT PEEK AT THIS CASE! 2. Answer one question. If you get it right then you may choose 2 cases to start the game. If you get the answer wrong try again. 3. Mark the value of each case selected off of the score sheet. 4. After you have selected 2 cases you will receive

3 your offer from the Banker, aka the calculator. 5. The deal offered to you after each round is the mean of the remaining values. You find the mean by adding the values together then dividing by the number of values you added together. (For example: your remaining values could be $100 and $10 your deal would be $55 because $100+$10=$110 and $110/2=$55) Show your work in the boxes provided. 6. If you choose to accept an offer at any point that will be your final score and the game is over; however, you may continue opening cases by answering one question at a time. For each question correctly answered you may now open one case. 7. If you reject all offers and are down to the last case on the board and the original case you set aside you may, only at this time, switch your case for the remaining case or keep your original. Whichever case is chosen may be opened and this is your final score. Assessment This is an introductory lesson on note taking therefore, teacher observation is necessary to determine if the students practiced the skills modeled to successfully take notes. The rubric I would use would not be for grading purposes but instead to know what to focus on for the next note taking opportunity.
