1 Doveton College It s cool to be at school DOVETON COLLEGE NEWSLETTER Principal s News There was Woody and the Horse, Dorothy the Scarecrow, Madeline, Captain Underpants, Pigeon in the Bus, The Mad Hatter, The Indian, Cinderella, and plenty of fairies; and that was only the staff. Congratulations to all who participated in the dress up as part of book week. The young students were wonderful in their costumes and the senior students got into the fun and frivolity of the day by parading throughout the College; even the rain couldn t put the older students off touring the classrooms with their costumes. The Early Learning staff had the students from each of the rooms in their costumes- Spider Man, Iron Man and Cinderella were plentiful. The children from the rooms loved parading and seeing all the other students show off their costumes. Thank you to the Prep - Year 2 teams, and the ELC staff who set up the Agora event and had a number of parents in attendance. After the Agora event, the older students toured the College. I loved the way the Year 3 9 students went through the junior rooms and interacted with the younger students and showed off their costumes. A great way to celebrate Book Week. Last week was positive in so many ways. The final day of the College review was held with staff, students and parents being involved. The outcome of the review will see a new 4 year strategic plan developed for the College to guide the period The student outcomes in NAPLAN were released last week and while there is still much to do to get 62 Tristania Street, DOVETON, 3177 T F E doveton.co@edumail.vic.gov.au 3 September 2015 Edition 13 SEPTEMBER Thursday 3 Fathers Day Stall Prep, 1, 3, 4 & 7 Friday 4 Fathers Day Stall Years 2, 5, 6, 8 & 9 Friday 4 Tuesday 8 Tuesday 8 Wed 9 Fri 11 Friday 11 Monday 14 Tuesday 15 Wednesday 16 Friday 18 Year 9 Goals Interview excursion to KMPG 2016 Prep Orientation 9:30am -10:30am Year 9 Goals Team Excursion Years 3 4 Camp Oasis Years 7 9 Students on Track Excursion Sandown Racetrack Whole School Assembly 2:20pm Years 4-6 Athletics Year 9 Careers Excursion Multicultural Day Friday 18 Last Day of School for Term 3 Students dismissed at 1:30pm OCTOBER Friday 2 Friday 8 Monday 26 Tuesday 20 NOVEMBER Early Learning Centre Closed Year 7 9 Regional Athletics Day Grade 1 Lego World Excursion Prep Orientation 9:30 10:30am Monday 2 Curriculum Day Prep Year 9 Tuesday 3 Tuedsay 17 Melbourne Cup Holiday Prep Orientation 9:30 10:30am Doveton College Last Day Term 3 Friday 18 September Students will be dismissed at 1:30pm Like Doveton College on Facebook 3 September 2015 Edition 13
2 Principal s News continued the results which I believe the College students are capable of, the first signs of significant growth in student outcomes were present. Year 9 student outcomes were highlighted by significant growth in all areas of testing. The Curriculum Day provided a welcome chance to get stuck into a number of required tasks. For the Early Learning staff, the ability to get together to talk about the vision and processes operating in the centre is not easily attainable given the lack of opportunity to meet; there are two shifts and 3 levels of staff operating in the centre each day Educators (teachers), Diplomas and Certificate III, each with variations in their workplace day. I spent some time with the ELC staff who were having an important discussion about leadership and processes and how they operate in the centre. It was vibrant and positive with the ELC focusing on the delivery of pedagogy and community interaction and communication as the priorities for this year. The community staff met to develop a number of priorities. There is plenty going on within the community team who are working on the end of year celebration day, our connection model and how we will use volunteers in a wider context. The teachers worked on their curriculum documentation. Progress in certainly being seen with the scope and sequence for courses being finalised and the discussion now moving to the best way of teaching courses. I spent time with the PE and Maths/ Science staff and had really fruitful discussions about Literacy across their Curriculum and what it actually looks like. The college is developing a vibrant and rigorous curriculum with the discussions now about what quality Teaching and Learning looks like in the classroom and implementing the curriculum in a robust and explicit way. Greg McMahon Executive Principal Planning for 2016 Are you Moving Schools? If you are looking at changing schools, please let the College know as soon as possible, so that we can plan for It is impotant that we know as soon as possible. Exciting new Programs starting next term. Information coming home soon. Early Learning News It s been a very busy time in Early Learning. A big thankyou to everyone for making sure the children came in their favourite character on Dress Up day. We enjoyed the parade with the big kids in Prep, Grades 1 & 2. Footy Day was a big success and thankyou to everyone that braved the rain and came along to our Bring a Bloke night last night. Fun was had by all involved. A big thankyou to the staff from Early Learning and those that helped from the College, who stayed longer or came back to work to make the evening a success. School Holidays are coming from the 21 September - 1 October and Early Learning will be open as usual. Only the teachers will be on leave. Friday October 2 is a public holiday and the Early Learning Centre will be closed. Lisa Dawes Assistant Principal Early Learning
