Authentic Social Learning Experiences Term 4, 2016
What is Sweet Skills? Sweet Skills are the solution to that thing you ve always wanted to try but didn t know where to start! Courses are run in streams of four sessions delivering authentic local learning experiences socially and affordably. Courses are run by knowledgeable, experienced and qualified (if required) instructors that want to share their interest, skill or hobby with others. You can sign up to individual sessions within a course to suit your availability and interests, or save money and learn more by signing up to the full course (4 sessions). Both options are available in our online store. Our courses are a great opportunity to try something new and make connections with others and the community along the way. Discovering new hobbies and skills with others is a great way to sweeten your social life. Get started with Sweet Skills! Befriend is a Perth based not-for-profit organisation run by a group of passionate volunteers who are determined to break social barriers that get in the way of making friendships happen. We re a community of almost 4000 people in Perth from diverse backgrounds and all walks of life. It doesn t matter where you re from, what you do, or what you believe in, Befriend values everyone. It sounds a bit cheesy, but we honestly believe that we can all just get along. Our roles are to be practical; we facilitate, organise and foster inclusive environments.
Riding For Transport Commuting by bike is becoming more popular around the city whether you want to work on your fitness, save money (and the environment!) or just want some fresh air and scenery, these sessions will touch all bases from safety essentials to smart route planning. You can sign up to individual sessions within this course, or save money and learn more by signing up to the full course. Session 1: Road Rules & Safe Rides - Sat 15 October This session will cover road safety and how to handle your bike (such as mounting, dismounting, breaking, gears and helmet use). We'll also practice bike balance, riding with one hand, looking over the shoulder and overtaking. Session 2: Commuting Kick-Start - Sat 22 October Think about your needs in regards to your bike: which type would suit you best, and will it need much storage capacity? This session will cover trip planning; assess your skills and fitness; and strategies for shortening rides. We will also revise using gears and why they are key to riding longer routes. Session 3: Bike Checks & Fixes - Sat 29 October Learn about key safety requirements of your bike (such as breaks, seat position, chain, and tires). You ll be taught some DIY quick fixes on the road (replacing the chain, fixing a flat) and what issues require urgent mechanical attention. Session 4: Commuting Test Ride - Sat 5 November Combining all the knowledge we ve learnt from the past three session, we ll do a medium length test ride, and if possible pick one of your chosen riding routes!
Art and Soul Art is not what you see, but what you make others see Express yourself in our Art and Soul series with a variety of art mediums! Designed for beginners, these sessions will get you to explore that child-like sense of playfulness and inquisitiveness in the company of others. You can sign up to individual sessions within this course, or save money and learn more by signing up to the full course. Session 1: Clay - Thurs 3 November Using your hands to work with clay can be a very calming and therapeutic experience. In this class, we will craft a clay treasure pot ; a vessel to hold the things you consider to be most precious to you. Session 2: Nature Houses & Wreath Making - Thurs 10 November Find your roots with our nature house and wreath-craft class. Use a range of natural materials and fibres to create beautiful, one-of-a-kind pieces! Session 3: Mandala Painting - Thurs 17 November An age-old spiritual symbol, a mandala represents the relationship between the universe and our inner-self. Using acrylic paints, you will get to visualise and design your own mandala, inspired by your inner wants and perspectives of life. Session 4: Creative Collage - Thurs 24 November Transform your thoughts, dreams and ideas into a collage! Get creative with turning newspaper, magazine clippings and natural fibres into a beautiful vision board to take home and display for future inspiration. This session is a great way to connect to those images inside that bring inner peace and wellbeing.
Meet & Make Gifts Got a knack for craft and design? Put your talents to use and make someone s day with our gift-making workshops! All materials are provided for each session; share a cup of tea with your fellow creatives and get crafting! You can sign up to individual sessions within this course, or save money and learn more by signing up to the full course. Session 1: Kokedama (Hanging Moss Balls) - Sat 19 November Prepare to get wet and messy with this adorable form of Japanese bonsai! Make an indoors hanging garden of moss balls with a variety of tiny plants. Bring an apron along or wear some older clothes you don't mind getting a bit dirty - you'll be taking your gardens home at the end! Session 2: Fused Glass Jewellery & Tree Ornaments - Sat 26 November Choose between making fused glass jewellery or funky tree ornaments. Skills include hand cutting glass, blending of glass colours and pattern design. You can craft multiple items including exquisite pendants, rings, brooches and earrings! Session 3: Soy Candle Making - Sat 3 December Soy candles are non-toxic, burn longer and have a much stronger, cleaner scent than typical wax candles! In this session, you will learn how to make scented soy candles and your very own decorated glass candle holder. Session 4: Plant Gifting Workshop - Sat 10 December Make quirky pot plants from recyclables like glass jars, plastic bottles, tins or even a favourite tea cup! Choose between succulents, moss or herbs to create your miniature garden. Whilst some recycled containers will be available, you are encouraged to bring your own to plant out your individual creation!
