1 Introduction Scope 1 novatelwireless.com

Scope This application note applies to the Novatel Wireless M2M Enabler III product family (except for the section on Low Power Sleep (LPS) Mode, which is for Mobile Tracker (MT) 4000 Series products). Unless otherwise stated, all examples and measurements are done on an Enabler III G module with 3.8V applied to VBAT. 2 novatelwireless.com

2 Power Save Modes Idle Shutdown Power Saving Mode for Mobile Tracker Products Low Power Sleep Mode (LPS) 3 novatelwireless.com

Novatel Wireless M2M products use several power saving techniques that provide different types of responsiveness. They include: Idle: Idle sleep mode is a standard feature on all Novatel Wireless M2M GSM, GPRS, and EDGE modules. Idle sleep mode allows an Novatel Wireless M2M modem to achieve the best ratio between a maximum of GSM responsiveness and a minimum of power consumption. In Idle sleep mode, the modem goes into sleep cycles and periodically pages to the network for incoming calls, SMS, or data. Shutdown: (Also known as Real Time Clock (RTC) Sleep). In Shutdown mode, devices can shutdown all interfaces and most internal functions to conserve power. Devices can reawaken by a pre-programmed RTC alarm or by cycling power to the device. Power Save: Power Save mode allows MT products (such as the Novatel Wireless M2M MTGu) to shut down the GPS receiver or stop GPS positioning to conserve power when location information is not needed. Ultra Low Power Management: The LPP0108 Low Power Platform uses a combination of a GSM radio, a GPS receiver, a motion sensor, and a Texas Instruments MPS430 lowpower microprocessor. The MSP430 can operate in a low-power mode and is still responsive to electric impulses from the motion sensor or an internal timer. Once the MSP430 receives an electric impulse, it reawakens all other components and returns the device to full operation. Idle The following sleep states apply to all Novatel Wireless M2M Enabler III GSM modules as well as to the SAG+ (GSM1308) and MTGu (GSM2338). In all these sleep states: The device maintains its current GSM and GPRS connection status The device has the ability to respond to incoming pages from the network The software continues to monitor: Peripherals Event engine triggers RTC functions 4 novatelwireless.com

Sleep States Four different sleep states are available: NO SLEEP: All sections of the modem remain powered on and ready to use. SMALL: All functions are active and perform normally. Some peripherals are in the sleep state. Sleep occurs within a TDMA frame if the CPU is inactive. The CPU and DSP are inactive between TDMA frames after task completion. The ARM clock is switched off and the DSP is disabled. All peripherals continue to receive clock signals. BIG: The radio and peripherals are asleep. The UART is awake and able to receive data on the serial port. The radio will wake up periodically to check for pages from the wireless network. DEEP: Only the 32 KHz clock and a small portion of the DSP are running; all other sections of the module are asleep. The UART is asleep but will wake up with the first character received (this character will be lost). The radio will wake up periodically to check for incoming pages from the wireless carrier. Applying The Sleep State To An Novatel Wireless M2M Modem You can apply the following sleep states to the Novatel Wireless M2M Modem by inputting the AT%SLEEP Command (these indicate the lowest level of sleep state the modem will achieve when idle): 0 = NO SLEEP 1 = SMALL 2 = BIG (default value for GSM0308) 3 = BIG + DEEP 4 = SMALL + BIG + DEEP 5 novatelwireless.com

The default setting of the AT%SLEEP Command is 2 (BIG). In this mode, the modem enters the relevant sleep state after approximately 10 seconds. You can achieve further power savings by adjusting the timer that controls the amount of time before the module goes into a sleep state after the last activity. This time is controlled by the AT$URTWTO Command, which you can adjust to vary between 1 and 60 seconds. (10 is default). The wakeup interval for paging depends on the network, but is usually about 0.5 to 1.5 seconds between paging. Paging notifies the modem of any calls, SMS, or incoming data. Example: If AT%SLEEP=1, the modem will be set to switch off the ARM and DSP CPUs in between TDMA frames. The unit will only power down these parts after the frame is processed and all other commands have been serviced (AT commands, API commands, event engine, etc). If AT%SLEEP=4, the CPU cores will go into SMALL sleep between TDMA frames. After no activity for approximately 10 seconds on serial port, the unit will power down all other peripherals and take approximately < 1mA while in this state. It will power the radio and DSP at the paging interval before returning to this state. During this state, the module is still accessible via the GSM radio network or via the serial port. Any SMS, call, or data will wake up the module. If accessed through the serial port, the module wakes up but will omit the first character. In some cases, DEEP sleep cannot be achieved (e.g., connecting a USB device). In this case, the modem will stay in SMALL sleep. Power Consumption In Sleep Mode Current consumptions (instantaneous current) SMALL BIG DEEP < 22 ma < 8 ma ~600 uamps instantaneous, 2.4 mamps average in DRX5 Please see appropriate integration or user's guide for more details on power consumption. 6 novatelwireless.com

Shutdown When you need greater power savings, you may decide to use shutdown mode. In this mode: All peripherals are shut off Only a real time clock is running The device is not attached to the network The device cannot receive any network pages All hardware interfaces are off The device can only be awakened by: An RTC alarm either through the RTC alarm command or with a periodic alarm in the event engine (see AT$EVENT input event 53) Cycling power to the device Placing The Device Into Shutdown Once you configure the device to wake up, you may place the device in shutdown mode. Do this by sending AT$RTCWAKE to the modem through the serial port, over the UDP or TCP API, or over SMS. The device will make one attempt to properly deregister from the network, then it will go into shutdown mode. The Current in the shutdown mode is approximately 50 uamps. Examples: Using RTC alarm to wakeup module: AT$RCTTIME=04,09,01,02,12,19,00 \\ sets local RTC time AT$RTCALRM=09,01,02,12,25,00 \\ sets time to wakeup module AT$RTCWAKE Using the Event engine to periodically wakeup the device to report to server: OEM module only: RTCWAKE is not a supported command on the integrated MT products. AT$EVTIM1=300 //set timer 1 to 5 minutes 7 novatelwireless.com

AT$EVENT=10,1,12,1,1 //timer 1 expires AT$EVENT=10,3,44,2,0 //execute stored event #2 power off modem AT$STOATEV=2,AT$RTCWAKE AT$RCTTIME=04,09,01,02,12,19,00 // sets local RTC time The AT$RTCWAKE command powers down the modem so only the RTC clock is running. The modem will power up automatically only if the RTC alarm feature has been configured, otherwise the modem will remain powered off. AT$STOATEV=1,AT&W //Stored AT command - save setting to NVMEM AT$EVENT=20,1,28,1,1 // IF RTC ALARM AT$EVENT=20,3,40,x,x // Send UDP message to 1st FRIEND server (your defined parm1 parm2) AT$EVENT=20,3,53,1,4 // SET Periodic RTC Alarm to execute 1 time, every 24 hour period AT$EVENT=20,3,44,1,0 //Fire Stores AT command in Slot 1 AT&W (Saves new $RTCALRM setting) AT$RTCALRM=09,01,02,23,55,00 //Set RTC Alarm for first instance (11:55 PM) AT&W //Save Setting to NVMEM The modem will power on due to RTC periodic alarm (configured to 1 time every day). Power up will reset timer 1 to count down to 300 seconds. The modem will send a message and then, after 300 seconds, the modem will execute a stored AT$WAKE to put the device into a shutdown state. Power Consumption In Shutdown Mode Current consumptions (instantaneous current) <50 uamps 8 novatelwireless.com

Power Saving Mode For Mobile Tracker Products The Novatel Wireless M2M MTGu contains a GSM radio module and a GPS receiver. Both components can individually be configured to save power. Power Save Mode For The GPS Receiver The GPS receiver does not provide a power save mode; however, the MTGu GPS receiver can be switched off individually. During off-mode, the receiver will not acquire GPS data but will display the last known GPS data. 1. To switch off the GPS receiver immediately: AT$GPSCMD=0 This will disable the GPS receiver immediately and the USR2 LED will turn off shortly after the command has been applied. The GPS receiver can also be switched off by setting AT$GPIO5=0. The GPS receiver can be enabled by the command AT$GPSCMD=1 (Cold start), which is also the default value for the MTGu. The USR2 LED will turn on as soon as a valid GPS signal is received. 2. To switch off the GPS receiver after a time delay: AT$PWRSAV=<ign>,<timeout>,<reg> <ign> 0 1 Disables the Ignition feature Enters low power mode after ignition signal goes low and timeout expires <timeout> seconds is the timeout value after which the unit will enter low power mode. Unit will work in normal mode until the timeout has expired. <reg> 0 Remains registered with GSM/GPRS network during low power mode. Please also refer to the Novatel Wireless M2M_Mobile_Tracker_Event_Cookbook for detailed information on the AT$PWRSAV command. 9 novatelwireless.com

Power Consumption In Power Save Mode With setting AT%SLEEP=4 and switching the GPS receiver off (AT$GPSCMD=0), the power consumption for the non-battery powered MTGu is about 22.4 ma. The Power ON, USR1, and GPS/PWR LEDs are hard-wired to +5 VDC. When the MT-Gu is operating on battery power, the LEDs can be switched off to save power; the overall current in power save mode is approximately 15 ma. Low Power Sleep Mode (LPS) This feature is applicable to the MT 4000 and MT 4100 devices. Low-Power Sleep (LPS) mode allows a device to go into a sleep state where only components that are critical in maintaining system integrity receive power. A device in LPS mode uses an auxiliary processor that offloads the burden of I/O processing from the main processor and removes unnecessary power from the main processor. All modem/gps activity stops while the device is in active LPS mode, which results in extreme power savings. The device remains in LPS mode and an auxiliary processor monitors system inputs until it encounters specified wake conditions. When it encounters a wake condition, the processor reapplies power to the modem, restarts script processing, and resumes GPS functions. Users can input AT Commands to fine-tune LPS mode, which saves power in the long-term. LPS Use Examples Users should rely on LPS mode when they do not need to use certain device features. For a device installed in a vehicle, a user could activate LPS mode while the vehicle ignition is off. This places the lowest possible drain on the battery especially in situations where no one will drive the vehicle for extended periods. When the ignition is on, the device exits LPS mode and prepares for vehicle tracking. Users should also rely on LPS mode when monitoring assets that do not normally move. A device could operate in LPS mode as its primary operating mode only waking for a periodic check-in with the gateway or reporting movement (theft) of the asset. Entering LPS Mode LPS mode is entered by issuing the AT$OFF Command. The parameters of this AT Command indicate what condition(s) will cause a device to exit LPS mode. Available exit conditions are: Ignition on or off Running on external or battery power Motion state (moving or stationary) GPIO1, GPIO9, or GPI10 state (low or high) RTC alarm/time period expiration *Any combination of these items may cause an exit from LPS mode. 10 novatelwireless.com

11 novatelwireless.com

When you input the AT$OFF Command: Power will be removed from the main processor Communications and GPS functions will no longer be available Script processing will cease Power consumption will minimize During LPS mode, user outputs will remain in the state they were last configured. Exiting LPS Mode LPS mode is exited when at least one of the conditions specified by the AT$OFF command are satisfied. At that time, power will be reapplied to the main processor and GPS system. The condition(s) that caused exit from LPS mode are available to the script engine for intelligent processing. To protect against errant configuration, LPS mode has a limit on the amount of time that it can be active. Using the AT$LPMTO command, the user can configure the maximum amount of time LPS will be active in the absence of a wake condition. If it detects no wake condition before the configured maximum time, LPS mode will exit as if it has detected a wake condition. In this case, timeout is the reason for waking. LPS AT Commands For more details on the AT commands please refer to the AT command document relevant to the device. Related AT Commands include: AT$OFF - Power Off Command AT$LMTO - Low Power Mode Timeout The following command activates LPS mode until the ignition is turned on. AT$OFF=1 The following command activates LPS mode until the ignition is turned on or motion is detected. AT$OFF=11 The following command activates LPS mode for 4 hours (240 minutes). AT$OFF=0, novatelwireless.com
