3 Introduction 1 2 Introduction Welcome to BT Connection Manager. BT Connection Manager allows you to connect your laptop to the Internet using Ethernet, Wi-Fi (including your BT Home Hub, BT Openzone, and BT FON) and the BT Mobile network (HSPA, 3G, GPRS). It searches for the best available network in your location and allows you to connect to the Internet. This means you'll automatically be able to connect to the best network available, if more than one's available (e.g. the BT Mobile network and Wi-Fi). 1.1 What is BT Connection Manager? BT Connection Manager can control your Wi-Fi, HSPA and Ethernet connections, automatically selecting the best available by default. Five Network Profiles are included with BT Connection Manager, these are: Local Wi-Fi - connects you to your home or office Wi-Fi network, allowing you to configure settings for multiple different Wi-Fi networks. BT Fon - when you are in range of a compatible Hotspot, connects you to BT Openzone or BT FON Wi-Fi. PAYG Wi-Fi - allows you to connect to a non-bt Openzone Wi-Fi provider, by presenting you with the provider's login page. BT Mobile - connects you to the Internet via our high speed HSPA, 3G and GPRS mobile network, as well as partner networks when roaming abroad. My Ethernet - connects you to a network via Ethernet (network cable).

6 5 2.2 BT Connection Manager User Guide Connecting with BT Connection Manager Best connected functionality built into BT Connection Manager automatically selects the best available network from the installed Network Profiles, based on what is available to you. To connect Click the centre button to connect. Depending on which Network Profile is active, you may be asked for configuration details such as the Wi-Fi network to connect to - before the connection can be established. When connected, the centre icon changes to show a solid green circle and a tick: To disconnect When connected, simply click the centre button to disconnect.

7 Using BT Connection Manager How Best Connected works Clicking the centre button to connect will cause BT Connection Manager to select the best available Network Profile, in the following order (highest to lowest priority): My Ethernet Local Wi-Fi BT Fon BT Mobile PAYG Wi-Fi If a Network Profile is available, a message will be displayed stating which one it is, along with any required configuration details - such as SSID or network adapter. Clicking Yes will choose and initiate the connection (e.g. will connect to Local Wi-Fi), and clicking No will cause BT Connection Manager to select the next best Network Profile available. If one is available, BT Connection Manager will display another message stating whether this Network Profile should be chosen. Again, clicking Yes will choose and initiate the connection (e.g. will connect to BT Mobile), and clicking No will cause BT Connection Manager to chose the next best available Network Profile. If a Network Profile is rejected (i.e. No has been clicked) in a particular session - you will not be prompted again to move connection until you manually disconnect by clicking the centre button and connect again / activate BT Connection Manager. If you decline all of the currently available Network Profiles, BT Connection Manager will remain in a state where it is searching for new Network Profiles to become available. BT Connection Manager remembers the Wi-Fi Networks (SSIDs) you have previously connected to. These are known as Favourites. When the Network Profile Local Wi-Fi is chosen, any Favourite SSIDs that are available will be shown prior to any other available SSIDs. BT Connection Manager will automatically start the connection to the Favourite SSID after 10 seconds. The Favourite SSID selected will be the one you "have most frequently connected to" Manually Connecting To manually choose which Network Profile to connect with, you can connect by clicking a technology icon. This will show all available profiles of that type.

9 Using BT Connection Manager Your Account To view messages and alerts from BT select the Your Account menu. This also shows information about topping up and registering your BT Mobile Broadband Pre-Pay account. 2.4 Usage Log

10 9 BT Connection Manager User Guide To show the usage history of your Network Profiles, select the Usage Log panel. You can view more detailed information about your usage history by clicking the This will launch your PC's default web browser. 2.5 button. Wi-Fi Networks The Wi-Fi Networks panel shows the currently available Wi-Fi networks in your area. The entries in the table show the signal strength (1), security status (2), BT Openzone partner availability (3), SSID (4), and channel number (5) for each wireless access point. An icon is shown in the BT Openzone partner column (3) when the access point is a BT Openzone or partner Hotspot. When you see this icon displayed, you can connect to this access point with the BT Openzone Network Profile using your BT Openzone user name and password. To connect to an access point in the table, right-click the network name and select a Network Profile from the list. If you hover the mouse over an entry in the table then more detailed information will be revealed in a tool-tip window. For example:

11 Using BT Connection Manager Connection Settings Selecting this panel allows you to configure your Network Profiles. Select a Network Profile from the drop-down box to view and edit its settings: Depending on which Network Profile you select, a number of tabs and settings will appear:

12 11 BT Connection Manager User Guide To edit an entry, double-click it and type/choose a value. Some entries appear as a selectable drop-down list. The drop-down list is revealed by doubleclicking on the item in the Value column:

14 BT Connection Manager User Guide Preferences A number of preferences are configurable in BT Connection Manager: Always On Top - Ticking this box will cause BT Connection Manager to always appear as the top most window on your desktop. Hide on Connect - Ticking this box will cause BT Connection Manager to minimise to the system tray when a connection is established. Start in Expanded Mode - Ticking this box will cause BT Connection Manager to appear in expanded mode when it is started up. Enable Password Preview - Ticking this box will cause BT Connection Manager to briefly show each key as you type your passwords. Auto connect on startup - Ticking this box will cause BT Connection Manager to startup and connect automatically when you log in to Windows.

15 Updates 3 14 Updates To enable BT to constantly improve your service, you will occasionally receive prompts to update BT Connection Manager when you connect to the Internet. These are in the form of database updates and software updates. To update the BT Connection Manager software please click Yes when prompted to update. The update will be downloaded and you will taken through a straight forward process that will upgrade BT Connection Manager on your PC.

A - A Network Profile is a list of settings used as method of connecting by BT Connection Manager. Some settings of Network Profiles are configurable - see Settings for more information. Q - How do I connect? A - See Connecting with BT Connection Manager. Q - How do I check my usage? A - See Usage Log. Q - How do I override BT Connection Manager and connect to a particular profile? A - See Manually Connecting. Q - What does the tick mean against certain SSIDs? A - It is regarded as a Favourite Wi-Fi Network. Q - What is a Favourite? A - A Favourite is a Wi-Fi Network (typically private) that you have previously connected to. Q - How do I add a Wi-Fi Network (SSID) to my Favourites? A - Simply connect to the Wi-Fi network, it will be automatically added. Q - How do I delete all my favourites? A - Right-click BT Connection Manager and select Delete All Favourites. Q - How do I check which version of BT Connection Manager I have installed? A - Right-click anywhere on BT Connection Manager and click About. The version will be displayed in the scrolling text box. 4.2 BT Openzone Q - What is BT Openzone? A - BT Openzone is a wireless broadband (Wi-Fi) service that you can access in public places (hotspots) such as airports, hotels and motorway service stations. You can get online at BT Openzone hotspots throughout the UK and Ireland, and at selected locations abroad. Q - What is a Hotspot? A - A hotspot is an access point in a public location such as a café or hotel where you can connect to the Internet at broadband speed using a wireless-enabled laptop or personal digital assistant (PDA). Hotspots use wireless fidelity (Wi-Fi). They broadcast a standard wireless frequency (up to 100 metres) that connects your equipment to the location's internet connection. It's that simple! Q - How do I know if I am in a BT Openzone hotspot?

18 17 BT Connection Manager User Guide A - The Network Profile BT Fon will be enabled. Also, there will be a sign displayed at the location of a BT Openzone hotspot: Q - How do I enter my BT Openzone credentials. A - You will be prompted for them when you first connect to a BT Openzone Hotspot, or you can set them in the settings panel. 4.3 BT Mobile Broadband Q How do I register my BT Mobile Broadband Pre-Pay account? A - To register your account and get access to your Welcome Bundle you'll need a BT.com account. If you don't have one, please find your normal BT bill and go to and select 'Sign up'. You'll be asked to enter your address, create a password, and enter your main BT account number. This is shown on your BT bill. Once you've done this, click 'Logout'. The BT Connection manager panel needs to be fully open - if it appears only as a circle, click the expand button, which is at the top of the screen, to the left of the X button. The Your Account menu should be open as shown below. If not, click on it to open.

19 FAQ 18 Next, select the Register tab and 'Click here to register' and you'll be directed to the Registration page on BT.com. Please follow the on-screen instructions. IMPORTANT: During the registration process, you will be asked to enter your mobile number. This is the mobile number for the SIM card which you inserted into the USB Modem. This number is shown on a sticker on the back of the E180 pack and also on the Register and Top up tabs when you are connected. Please don't enter your normal mobile number here. After entering your number, a confirmation message will be received on BT Connection Manager. The Alerts tab will open automatically. Make a note of the four-digit Registration Code (PIN) and enter it when prompted by the BT.com registration process. Once your details have been confirmed, the website will thank you for registering and will confirm that your Welcome Bundle, for use on the BT Mobile network, will be ready to use in approximately 15 minutes. Congratulations! You're now set up and ready to use BT Mobile Broadband Pre-Pay. The Welcome Bundle means you can get going straight away, using your laptop on the BT Mobile network. Q How do I Top up? A - Top up your e-wallet online from the BT Connection Manager dashboard: Click on the Top up tab under Your Account, and then follow the on screen instructions. You will need to enter your bt.com username and password, then choose from the options for bundles, amounts and payment methods. Q - What is 3G? A - 3G is short for third-generation technology and is the next generation of cellular services (analogue was the first and digital the second). It is also known as IMT-2000 (International Mobile Telecommunications-2000), which is the global standard for third generation (3G) wireless communications as defined by the International Telecommunication Union. 3G networks can be

20 19 BT Connection Manager User Guide based on a number of different protocols, for example UMTS or HSPA. Q - What is GPRS? A - GPRS stands for General Packet Radio Service and is a mobile data service that uses existing mobile telephone networks. GPRS is often described as "2.5G", that is, a technology between the second (2G) and third (3G) generations of mobile telephony. The maximum speed of a GPRS connection is roughly the same as a modem connection, i.e. about kbit/s. Q - What is UMTS? A - Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS) is one of the third-generation (3G) mobile phone technologies. It can provide download speeds up to 7.2 Mbit/s. Q - What is HSPA? A - HSPA stands for High-Speed Packet Access and is a 3G mobile telecommunications technology. Current HSPA deployments support download speeds of up to 7.2 Mbit/s. Q - What is EDGE? A - Enhanced Data rates for GSM Evolution (EDGE) is a digital mobile phone technology that provides increased data rates and improved reliability. It is generally classified as a 2.75G network technology, as it is a bolt-on enhancement to 2G and 2.5G GSM and GPRS networks, but could be considered a 3G network due to it's higher data rate. EDGE can provide an average mobile data connection of between kbit/s. Q - What is a SIM Card? A - SIM stands for subscriber identity module. A SIM Card is a small removable card with a chip inside that contains the personal identification number (PIN) of the user and identifies the network to which the user belongs. It is inserted into a mobile phone or a wireless access card to enable the user to access the network and can be used to store information such as the user's phone book. Q - Can I manage my SIM card's PIN with BT Connection Manager? A - Yes. When a compatible mobile data device is inserted, right-click BT Connection Manager and three SIM PIN management options are included in the context menu:

21 Troubleshooting 5 20 Troubleshooting General Wi-Fi Mobile Data 5.1 General BT Connection Manager states that there are 'No connections available'. This means that none of the Network Profiles are currently available due to one or more of the following reasons: You are not in range of any Wi-Fi networks. Wi-Fi is not enabled on your PC. You do not have a supported mobile data device inserted or active. You do not have a SIM card in your mobile data device. You do not have a network cable plugged into your PC's Ethernet port. How do I remove BT Connection Manager? Like other Windows applications, you can remove BT Connection Manager from the Add/Remove Programs section of Control Panel. 5.2 Wi-Fi The Local Wi-Fi and BT Fon Network Profiles will not turn green when I am in range of a Wi-Fi network. If your Wi-Fi device is not built in to your PC, please ensure that it is inserted correctly. If your WiFi device is built in to your PC, please ensure it is switched on and enabled. Many PCs have a switch to turn Wi-Fi on and off. If the switch is already on then switch it OFF and then ON and wait for a few seconds to see if the profile will turn green. If this still does not work then reboot your PC. When connecting with the BT Fon Network Profile I get the error '17006 Access point authentication failed'. If this error message is displayed when trying to connect to a BT Openzone or partner Hotspot, this means that your account details may have been entered incorrectly. If you are sure that you have entered the information correctly, contact BT Openzone on (within UK only) or (outside UK) anytime. When connecting with the BT Fon Network Profile I get the error '17007 Invalid Certificate'. If this error message is displayed when trying to connect to a BT Openzone or partner Hotspot, one of the following has occurred: Your PC's date and time are not set correctly double-click on the clock at the lower-right corner of your Windows desktop and check the settings Your PC's certificates need updating these can be obtained from Microsoft's web site

22 21 BT Connection Manager User Guide Your otherwise secure BT Openzone username and password may be at risk due to a suspected 'man in the middle' attack, causing BT Connection Manager to abort the log-in procedure in order to protect your unique log-in details. If the date and time settings on your PC are correct and you have the latest certificates installed, you should contact BT Openzone immediately as it would appear that the Hotspot is fraudulently reporting that it is a BT Openzone Hotspot. Anyone connecting to this Hotspot runs the risk of having their BT Openzone login details compromised when not using BT Connection Manager. As a BT Connection Manager user, your details are safe! 5.3 USB Modem When I insert my USB Modem nothing happens. This could be for a number of reasons: Please ensure Autorun is enabled on your PC. You can check in the Windows Registry, under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Cdrom. If the Autorun value is 0 it is disabled, and if it is 1 it is enabled. BT cannot be held responsible for any damage caused by editing the Windows Registry. Please ensure Plug and Play is enabled on the device. You can check to see if it is by looking to see if there is a CDROM drive named 'CONNECTION_MANAGER' in your My Computer's drive list when the device is inserted. You can check enable Plug and Play with the BT Huawei PnP tool. This is available from the BT Connection Manager Programs folder in the Windows Start menu. Alternatively, the device may not have been installed correctly. Pull out the device and re-insert it and wait a few seconds. If that does not work then try another USB port if available. If it is still an issue then ensure the device has sufficient power from your PC's USB port.
