1 90-port 10/100/1000 Base-T Ethernet Line Card Feature Highlights and Installation Instructions Catalog Number: LC-EF-GE-90M Feature Highlights 15 mini RJ-21 connectors that support 90 auto-negotiation capable 10/100/1000 Base-T Ethernet ports. Use Force10 approved CAT5E shielded twisted-pair Tyco cable (P/N ). See Cable and Connectors on page 3 for alternate cable construction. Cables, connectors, and their use must comply with the EIA/TIA 568 Standard in the US, and ISO/ IEC (2nd Edition) elsewhere. It is recommended that the cable be certified with a cable tester. The EF series line cards support a single 18Mb user configurable CAM with flexible partition assignments. The following max entries are: 256K Layer 3 IP forward information base (FIB) 256K Layer 2 FIB 64K Layer 3 IPv6 FIB 128K Layer 2 and Layer 3 access control list (ACL) entries 24K IPv6 ACL entries Supports online insertion and removal (OIR) of line card. Supports ingress and egress Layer 2 and Layer 3 ACL processing across all ports. Supports full duplex only. Requires FTOS or higher. Label Description Port 90 ports Port LEDs Green = link up Unlit = port is down Flashing green = activity Status LED Flashing green = Initializing Green = Line card online Amber = Failed power-on self test or fault detected Unlit = No power to the line card or the line card is administratively shut down Warning: Electrostatic discharge (ESD) damage can occur if components are mishandled. Always wear an ESD-preventive wrist or heel strap when handling line cards. Connect the ESD strap to the grounding plug. Place line cards on an antistatic surface and store in anti-static bags when they are not installed
2 Installation Instructions The E-Series system line cards are hot-swappable. You can add, replace, or remove a line card without interrupting the system power or system operations. No additional configuration is necessary if you insert a new line card into a slot occupied by a blank panel or if you hot-swap identical line card types. Notes: Do not remove a blank panel from the chassis until you are ready to install a line card into that slot. If you remove a line card, immediately fill the empty slot with a blank. Blanks are required to control airflow and electromagnetic interference. Line cards fit only in chassis slots 0 through 13 in an E1200 chassis and slots 0 through 6 in an E600 chassis. Chassis slots R0 and R1 are designed for the route processor modules (RPMs). If you replace an existing line card with a different series line card, you must configure the system with the updated line card information. Installing the Line Card 1 Hold the line card by the edges. Avoid touching the printed circuit board and connector pins. Extend the bottom line card lever before you insert the line card into the slot. Align the line card with the upper and lower line card guides and gently slide the line card into the slot until you feel the connectors engage with the chassis backplane. 2 Rotate the lever to seat the backplane connectors and lock the line card in place. 3 Secure the line card in place by tightening the top and bottom screws on each line card, using a #2 Phillips screwdriver. Key Mini RJ21 Cable Connector fn00206ch Figure 3 Connector with Key feature in the up (top) position Vertical Cable Management Site Preparation Please be aware of these important precautions when managing cables for the 90-port 10/100/1000 Base-T Ethernet line card. Only route cables upward when connecting to the line card. Routing cables downward will damage the cables. Support the cable bundle at least 14 inches above the chassis top, inline with the 90-port line card, and approximately two inches in front of the card face. Provide an additional six inches of cable slack for card removal. This ensures freedom of movement for the line card when installing or removing. It also prevents card damage by reducing cable load at the connector
5 In order to prevent damage to the connectors or the line card, ensure that cables are not strained at the connectors. Ensure that cables adhere to a minimum five-inch bend radius. Ensure the cables do not cross in front of any other line card so as to obstruct that line card from being removed or reseated. The optional Force10 Vertical Cable Management Kit (Catalog number CC-E1200-CMK-V or CC-E600-CMK-V) is specifically designed for use with the 90-port line card. Replacing the current line card with a different line card type 1 Remove the existing line card from the chassis slot. See Removing the line card on page 6. 2 In the CONFIGURATION mode, execute the no linecard number command to remove the old line card type configuration. In this command, number is the chassis slot number (range: 0 to 13 for the E1200 and 0 to 6 for the E600). 3 Insert the new line card. FTOS will detect the new line card and enter it in the running configuration. 4 In the EXEC privilege mode, enter the copy running-config file-url CLI command to save the configuration. In this command syntax, file-url is the location to save the file. To view a list of possible file locations, enter copy running-config? Pre-configuring a line card slot 1 In the CONFIGURATION mode, enter the linecard number card-type command with the card information. Where number is the chassis slot number (range: 0 to 13 for the E1200 and 0 to 6 for the E600) and card-type is the line card indicator. 2 In the EXEC privilege mode, enter the copy running-config file-url command to save the configuration. Where file-url is the location to save the file. To view a list of possible file locations, enter the copy running-config? command. 3 The slot is now configured for your virtual line card. Ensure that you insert only the line card type that you named in step 1. To view the line card and chassis configurations, use the following commands: Command Syntax Command Mode Purpose show linecard [number] [brief] EXEC View the line card(s) status. show chassis [brief] EXEC EXEC privilege View the configuration and status of modules in the E-Series chassis. Use this command to determine status of the chassis
6 Reseating the line card 1 Unhook the cable hanger or make any necessary adjustment to the installed cables to allow freedom of movement of the cables and line card. (The object is to provide enough slack in the cables to gain access to the line card s top captive screw.) 2 Use a #1 Phillips screwdriver, with a long handle, to loosen the captive screw at the top of the line card. To do this, you must manage the screwdriver past the existing cables. 3 Loosen the captive screw at the bottom of the line card. 4 Grasp the line card handle located at the bottom of the line card faceplate. Rotate the handle downward until the line card becomes unseated. 5 Pull out the line card at least one inch. 6 Reseat the line card by inserting it fully into the slot and rotating the handle upward to the secure position. 7 Use a long handled screwdriver to secure the captive screws at the top and bottom of the line card. 8 Reinstall any part of the cable management system that was removed, or make any adjustments to the cable management system so it is properly retaining cables. Removing the line card 1 Unhook the cable hanger or make any necessary adjustment to the installed cables to allow freedom of movement of the cables and line card. (The object is to provide enough slack in the cables to gain access to the top captive screw of the line card.) 2 Use a #1 Phillips screwdriver, with a long handle, to loosen the captive screw at the top of the line card. To do this, you must manage the screwdriver past the existing cables. 3 Loosen the captive screw at the bottom of the line card. 4 Pull out the line card far enough to gain access to the cable connector screws. 5 Use a long handled screwdriver to remove the cables in reverse connector order (from 14 to 0). 6 While keeping all cables clear of line card components, the line card may now be fully removed from the chassis
