2 BARE ROOT CONIFERS AMERICAN LARCH (Larix laricina) BALSAM FIR (Abies balsamea) Description: Also known as a tamarack, a deciduous conifer that loses its needles each fall. Small, rosy pink cones in spring, soft green needles in summer changing to yellow needles in autumn. Mature Height: Growing Conditions: Prefers moist, acidic soils. Adaptable to various soil conditions. Intolerant of heat, drought and shade. Description: Flat, dark green needles with strong balsam scent. Slender, conical shape makes a good tree for landscaping. The only fir native to the Northeast. Mature Height: Growing conditions: Prefers moist, well-drained, somewhat acidic soils. BLACK SPRUCE (Picea mariana) EASTERN HEMLOCK (Tsuga canadensis) Description: Narrow evergreen with stiff dark blue-green needles. Smallest cones of all the spruces, produced in dense clusters towards top of tree. Used as nesting site for birds. Mature Height: Growing Conditions: Prefers moist, acidic soil. Tolerant of wet sites. Description: Short, dark-green needles on widely spaced branches. Large, long-lived, shade tolerant tree. State tree of Pennsylvania. Mature Height: Growing Conditions: Prefers moist, well-drained acidic soils. EASTERN WHITE PINE (Pinus strobus) RED PINE (Pinus resinosa) Description: Soft, blue-green needles and open canopy. Fast growing and easily transplanted. Wildlife feed on pinecone seeds and needles. Mature Height: Growing Conditions: Prefers moist, well-drained sandy soils in sunny areas. Adaptable to various soil types and conditions. Description: Long, dark green needles and reddish-brown bark. Excellent windbreak or visual screen. Valuable timber tree. Mature Height: Growing Conditions: Prefers dry, sandy, slightly acidic soils. Cold tolerant. Adaptable to various soil types and conditions.

3 POTTED DECIDUOUS BLACK CHOKEBERRY (Aronia melanocarpa) NORTHERN RED OAK (Quercus rubra) Description: Small to medium sized hardy shrub with clustered white flowers in spring followed by red foliage and black berries in the fall. Easily transplanted. Mature Height: 3-6 Growing Conditions: Prefers moist, well drained, acidic soils. Adaptable to various soil types and conditions. Description: Fast growing oak with leaves turning deep red in autumn. Provides excellent shade and is a valuable timber tree. Acorns attract wildlife. Mature Height: Growing conditions: Prefers moist, well drained, slightly acidic soils. Tolerant of salt and air pollution. Adaptable to various conditions. REDBUD (Cercis canadensis) Description: Small, round tree with short trunk and broad crown. Purplish-pink flowers emerge in early spring, large heart-shaped leaves turn yellow in fall. Pollinator for hummingbirds and honeybees. Mature Height: Growing Conditions: Prefers moist, well drained soils in full sun. Tolerant of moderate shade and drought. RIVER BIRCH (Betula nigra) Description: Medium sized, fast growing tree with salmon-pink to reddish brown bark that peels to lighter bark. Resistant to bronze birch borer. Easily transplanted, favored as an ornamental tree. Mature Height: Growing Conditions: Prefers moist, acidic soils in wet and swampy areas. SUGAR MAPLE (Acer saccharum) SWAMP WHITE OAK (Quercus bicolor) Description: Spectacular yellow, orange and red foliage in fall. Provides excellent shade in summer, making it an ideal ornamental tree for large open landscapes. Sap can be collected for maple syrup. Mature Height: Growing Conditions: Prefers moist, well drained soils. Description: Low-lying oak with peeling bark and two-toned leaves. Provides excellent shade for any landscape. Acorns attract wildlife. Mature Height: Growing Conditions: Prefers moist, acidic soils in low-lying areas along creeks or swampy areas. WINTERBERRY (Ilex verticillata) Description: Medium to large sized shrub with bright red berries developing in the fall and lasting through the winter. Requires male and female plant to produce berries. Excellent wetland or landscaping shrub. Berries attract wildlife. Mature Height: 6-10 Growing Conditions: Prefers moist, acidic soils. Typically occurs in swamps, low woods and along ponds and streams.

4 POTTED PERENNIAL POLLINATORS BLAZING STAR (Liatris spicata) BLUE WILD INDIGO (Baptisia australis) Description: Tall, slender perennial with grass-like leaves near the base and crowded purple flower heads on top. Blooms late summer. Primarily attracts bees, birds, butterflies and hummingbirds. Mature Height: 3-6 Growing Conditions: Prefers full sun and moist, well drained soils. BUTTERFLY WEED (Asclepias tuberosa) Description: Milkweed with clusters of bright orange flower heads in summer that produce an abundance of nectar. Blooms spring to early fall. Primarily attracts butterflies, hummingbirds and bees. Mature Height: 1-3 Growing Conditions: Requires full sun. Prefers well drained, sandy soils. Tolerant of drought. Description: Hardy, long-lived perennial legume with blue-purple pea-like flowers. Blooms mid to late summer. Primarily attracts bees and butterflies. Mature Height: 3-5 Growing conditions: Prefers full sun and moist, well drained soils. Tolerant of salt and air pollution. Adaptable to various soil conditions. COLUMBINE (Aquilegia canadensis) Description: Known for its bell-shaped red and yellow flowers with blue-green foliage. Blooms early spring to mid summer. Primarily attracts butterflies and hummingbirds. Mature Height: 1-3 Growing Conditions: Prefers shade-partial sun and moist, well drained soils. Intolerant of full sun. NEW ENGLAND ASTER (Symphyotrichum novae-angliae) Description: Showy perennial with deep violet to purple flowers and yellow center. Blooms late summer to early fall. Primarily attracts bees and butterflies. Mature Height: 2-6 Growing Conditions: Prefers partial to full sun and moist, damp soils. Tolerant of drier soils. PURPLE CONEFLOWER (Echinacea purpurea) Description: Popular perennial with smooth stems, long lasting purple flowers and a brown spiny center. Blooms mid to late summer. Primarily attracts bees, birds, butterflies and hummingbirds. Mature Height: 2-4 Growing Conditions: Prefers moist, well drained soils. Adaptable to various soil and sun conditions. WILD BERGAMOT Description: Also known as Bee Balm, is a showy perennial with clusters of pink and (Monarda fistulosa) purple pompom-shaped flowers. Leaves have a mint scent. Blooms mid to late summer. Primarily attracts bees, butterflies and hummingbirds. Mature Height: 2-5 Growing Conditions: Prefers partial to full sun and dry to moist, well drained soils.
