7 Part 1. Introduction to building strategy maps The strategy map is a visual tool for defining, planning, and communicating the overall strategy of an organization. It provides a clear picture of the overall objectives or goals of the organization (Where are we going?), the actions that are planned to achieve those goals (How are we getting there?), and the means by which the achievement of those goals will be measured (How will we know we are there?). This tutorial guides you through the steps for creating a strategy map using WebSphere Business Compass. Learning objectives In this tutorial, you will: v Learn how to create a sample space and sample documents for exploring the WebSphere Business Compass business design features. v Learn how to create a strategy map and add different strategy elements, such as goals, actions, and measures. v Learn how to link to other business documents, such as a business vocabulary document, or a process map. v Learn how to format your strategy map to highlight areas of interest. v Export your strategy map to Microsoft PowerPoint for presenting and sharing with others. 9 Chapter 1. Creating the sample Business Design space In this lesson, you will create a sample Business Design space for completing the tutorial. You will own this space, and all of the documents that you create or update will be visible only to you, unless you explicitly grant access to other users. To create the sample design space: 1. Log in to the WebSphere Business Space where WebSphere Business Compass is installed. If this is your first time logging in, the Business Design Home space opens. If the Business Design Home space does not open, click Home in the top-left corner. If this does not take you to the Business Design Home space, click Manage Spaces and then click Business Design Home. 2. On the Business Design Central page, click Try. Your sample space and sample documents are created, and you are automatically taken to the new space. Business Design spaces each consist of two pages: v An Overview page that includes a Getting Started widget where you can explore learning material, launch viewlets, or create documents, a Team widget that lists the space members, and a Recent Documents widget where your recently created sample documents are listed. v The Design page where you author and manage your business design documents. 3. To go to the Design page, click the Design tab. In the Design page, you see the Documents view where all of the sample documents are listed. From the Documents view, you can search for documents in the repository or make your documents public in the repository for others to see. Notice that the sample documents that you created in Step 2 are all visible in the Documents view. You can open these documents by clicking them. Copyright IBM Corp

11 Chapter 2. Creating a new strategy map In this lesson, you will learn how to create a new strategy map and add strategy map elements. Strategy maps consist of a number of different element types. Typically, a map includes a set of goals that will help achieve the strategic vision. Each goal has a set of actions that will help in the attainment of the goal, and measures to determine if the goal has been successfully achieved. The strategy map can also describe the set of business factors that impact the overall strategy, either making the stated goals easier to achieve, or by presenting potential challenges to achieving the stated goals. Business factors can be classified as strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, or threats. Each different type of element in a strategy map is represented with a unique symbol: Element type Goal Icon Action Measure Strength Weakness Opportunity Threat Generic element Let's create a new strategy map and add some of these elements. Before you begin, make sure you are in the Documents view of the Design page. 1. In the Create tool bar click the New Strategy Map button. A dialog window opens for you to add a name and description. 2. It is a good idea to use your vision statement as the basis for your map name. In this case, call your map "JKAir delights its customers". In the description field, enter "This is our current strategy for improving customer service." 3. Your new strategy map opens in the Strategy editor. When you first create a default strategy map, some default elements are provided for you. You can keep these elements and rename them, or create your own. In this case, we are going to delete all the default elements. Copyright IBM Corp

12 Select all the default elements by clicking on the canvas and dragging the selection rectangle over the entire map. Hit Delete to delete all but the central element in the diagram. 4. The first step to mapping strategy is to add some goals for achieving your vision. Hover over the edge of the center map element until the + button appears, and click to add a new element. 5. The default name of the new element is selected by default, ready for you to rename it. Rename the element "Outstanding In-flight Service". 6. By default the element is a generic element. Change this to a goal by clicking on the icon and selecting Goal from the drop down list of element types. 7. Add another goal by hovering over the central element and clicking the + button. 8. Rename this element to "JKAir is synonymous with reliability" and make it a goal by clicking the icon and selecting Goal from the drop-down list.. 9. Add a child element to the Outstanding In-flight Service goal by hovering over the edge of the element and clicking the + button. Call this element "Improve Staff Training" and change it into an action by clicking the icon and selecting Action from the drop-down list. 10. You can also add elements by using the Outline view. If the Outline view is not visible, click the Outline button in the View menu of the tool bar. 11. In the Outline view, highlight Outstanding In-flight Service and hit Enter. A new element is added as a sibling of the previous element in the list. 12. Rename this new element to "Offer Key Service Differentiators". 13. Change the element type by clicking the icon and selecting Action from the drop-down list. 14. This new action is part of implementing the Outstanding In-flight Service goal, so select the element in the outline view and hit Tab to indent it and make it a child element of this goal. Notice that the changes that you make in the Outline view are reflected in the diagram. You can continue to add elements to your strategy map to describe your vision for the company. 13 Chapter 3. Linking strategy to other business design documents Strategy maps can link to other business design documents or to elements in other documents. The linking between documents can be useful when cascading the overall strategy down to individual business units so that they can define their own strategy maps that build on the overall strategy map. For example, the Human Resources department might have their own strategy to address a goal, such as Inflight Staff are Best-of-Breed, that contributes to the overall business strategy. The overall strategy map can link from this goal in the high-level strategy map to the department-specific map that expands upon this goal. Similarly, an action such as Reduce Check-In Time might be linked to a process map that details an expedited check-in process. Strategy maps can also make use of entries that you have defined in your business vocabulary documents, such as technical terms or standard role definitions. By referencing entries defined in your vocabulary, you can ensure that document reviewers and readers share a common interpretation for the terms used in your strategy document. You can also link to a role defined in your vocabulary to indicate who should be the owner of a particular strategy. In this lesson, you will learn how to create these links using the sample documents that were created in your sample space in the first lesson of this tutorial. Tip: If you have closed your strategy map since completing the previous lesson, you need to re-open the map, and put it into edit mode by clicking the Edit button in the top left corner of the toolbar. 1. Links to other documents are added through the Details view. The Details view shows the description, owner, and link details for a selected element, or for the whole document if no element is selected. If the Details view is not currently open, you can open it by clicking the Details button on the View menu of the tool bar. In your strategy map, select the Improve Staff Training element. To select which element attributes to display, click the Show button and select Owners and Links from the drop-down list. 2. Since this action is a Human Resources action, the owner will be a Human Resources Representative. This role is already defined in the sample business vocabulary document that was created in the first lesson of this tutorial. Click Add... in the Owners section to look up this role in the business vocabulary. The Add an Owner window opens. 3. Type "Human Resources" in the search field and click the Search button to bring up the list of roles that match your search string. 4. Select Human Resources Representative from the list, and click OK. A link is added to this role in the vocabulary. 5. Implementing this service training also represents a change to the Human Capital Management capabilities that are mapped out in a sample capability map created in the first lesson of this tutorial. Add a link to this capability by clicking Add... in the Links section. The New Document Link window opens. Copyright IBM Corp

14 6. Select the JKAir Capabilities document from the list and click Show elements >> to drill down into the document. 7. Select the Service Excellence Training element and click OK. 8. Select the Specify a label for the selected links check box at the bottom of the window. 9. Type "Related Capabilities" into the text field. After you create this label once, it will be available from the drop-down list to categorize other links that you add to the document. 10. Click OK to close the window. A link is added to the Service Excellence Training capability in the capability map. You can click on this link to open this document. Other users can now navigate the document links that you have created, even when in read-only mode. 8 WebSphere Business Compass Version 7: Getting started with strategy maps

15 Chapter 4. Formatting and exporting strategy maps You can change the appearance of individual map elements to make your map more visually appealing and easier to read. You can change the background color of elements, for example to highlight important areas of your map, or to visually group elements that share particular attributes, such as owner. You can also format the text that appears on an element to highlight important words or phrases. After you are satisfied with the appearance of your map, you can export it to Microsoft PowerPoint to share it with others. Tip: If you have closed your strategy map since completing the previous lesson, you need to re-open the map, and put it into edit mode by clicking the Edit button in the top left corner of the toolbar. 1. Imagine that we want to color-code the actions in our strategy map to show the priority of certain actions. Select the Improve Staff Training element, and click the Background button in the tool bar. 2. Select a color from the drop-down list to indicate that this action is high-priority. The background color of the element changes to the selected color. 3. To export your map to Microsoft PowerPoint slides for presenting to others, click the Microsoft PowerPoint button on the Export tool bar. The Select Format for Export window opens. There are two formats that you can use to export your map. The Report format provides detailed information for your map, including an overview image of the map, single-page images of map sections, and descriptive details about the map and its elements. The Poster format generates a set of slides that can be assembled together to form a single view of a large map. The poster format also includes a single-page overview of the map which can be used as a guide for assembling the map sections that appear on separate slides. 4. Select the Poster format and click OK. The Collecting Document Information window opens. 5. After the progress bar reaches 100%, click OK. 6. Specify a location for saving your exported map, and click Save. After your map is exported, you can open the document and print it. For larger maps, you can paste the printed sheets together to create a poster of the entire map. Copyright IBM Corp
