DESCRIPTOR: TÉCNICAS DE LECTURA Y ESCRITURA DE TÉXTOS TÉCNICOS EN LENGUA EXTRANJERA (B.O.E. núm. 223 de 17/09/99) 2. SITUACIÓN: This subject constitutes the second part of the subject called Inglés aplicado a la informática I, attended by students in the first semester of the first year of this degree PRERREQUISITOS: The student attending to this subject must have an average level of English, specifically the standard acquired in the official education leading to university studies. In case of not having such level, students will have to work on his/her own in order to acquire oral and written competences as well as reading and listening capacities, so necessary when following presence sessions and when autonomously developing the activities planned for non-presence sessions CONTEXTO DENTRO DE LA TITULACIÓN: Due to its contents, and also according to the description of the subject in BOE, this subject keeps a close relation with Inglés aplicado a la informática I and Inglés aplicado a la informática III. This discipline continues the work developed by the student in the subject in first year and concurrently establishes a bridge towards the optional subject in third year. Equally, the semestral subjects Inglés aplicado a la informática I, II y III mean an essential and indispensable tool for the student of Computer Science, since the universal language in the transmission of knowledge in contemporary society, and specifically in the field of Computing, is the English language RECOMENDACIONES: It is strongly recommended to have coursed and passed the subject Inglés aplicado a la Informática I. Likewise, Inglés aplicado a la informática III should not be taken until having passed this 1

2 subject. 3. COMPETENCIAS: 3.1. COMPETENCIAS TRANSVERSALES/GENÉRICAS: Oral and written communication: by means of the progressive development of the linguistic skills of reading y writing. Likewise, by means of the careful listening and oral participation of the student in presence sessions. Knowledge of English: acquired through the gradual evolution of the planned activities for both presence and non-presence sessions. Capacity of analysis and synthesis: developed through the close reading of the texts selected for the purpose as well as specific activities based on them. Capacity of organization and planning: by means of the proposal of complementary tasks requiring that the student proficiently manages his/her time of non-presence work. Capacity to manage information: covered by the realization of writing activities that will first be guided by the teacher until the student reaches a minimum level of autonomy. Decision making: derived from the realization of a user s manual that the student will have to carry out in groups. Team work: the student has to improve those emotional capacities that allow him/her to develop a creative group work. Work in an international context: the proposed activities are intended for students to relate by writing and reading texts with individuals, scientific communities and imaginary commercial firms in the most international language: English. Abilities in interpersonal relationships: the student must not only acquire knowledge inherently characteristic of English but also must s/he develop the capacity to correctly deal with her/his classmates and the teacher. Critical reasoning: this competence is acquired in this discipline thanks to text analysis of written texts in English language and to the activities derived from them. Ethical compromise: this competence is closely linked with the four previous ones. The student must be aware of the relevance of ethic conscience in the environment in which her/his education is taking place and, in general, in contemporary society. Autonomous learning: the learning process, in any case, directly depends on the student s will. S/he, by means of the proposed activities and the guidelines offered by the teacher, must be responsible of her/his continuous formation. Creativity: this competence is dealt with by means of the realization of activities, both individual and in groups, in which the student must create texts in English. Initiative and enterprising attitude: by means of active participation in the activities developed in presence sessions, especially in practical hours. Motivation for quality and continuous improvement: the aim is to offer the student the atmosphere and the confidence necessary so that the learning of English as a second language becomes a lifetime process and not a mere pitfall in her/his university life. Capacity to apply theoretical knowledge to practice: by means of the proposal of activities in which the student has to use all his/her previous knowledge. Capacity to communicate with people amateur in the discipline: the student must learn to address in his/her writings to any kind of reader COMPETENCIAS ESPECÍFICAS: Cognitivas (Saber): - HUMANISTIC KNOWLEDGE: acquired by means of the exhaustive analysis of scientifictechnical texts and the terminology needed for such ends. 2

3 - LANGUAGE: the linguistic ability of writing and reading must be excelled throughout the academic year. - COMPOSITION AND INTERPRETATION OF TECHNICAL DOCUMENTATION: the student is expected to systematically and intensively face technical documents, both in reading and writing throughout the semester. - COMPUTING KNOWLEDGE: reinforced by the creation of texts that the student must hand in the format specified in the style guide. Procedimentales/Instrumentales (Saber hacer): - MANAGEMENT OF THE INFORMATION. DOCUMENTATION: both steps are essential for the writing of scientific and technical texts in English. - PLANNING, ORGANIZATION AND STRATEGY: these competences are especially dealt with by means of teamwork proposed to students. - WORK ESTIMATION AND PROGRAMMING: equally, the student must be her/his own work manager of the tasks that have to be developed in order to pass the subject with full satisfaction. Actitudinales (Ser): - QUALITY: interest in the quality of the activities developed, in presence hours as well as in non-presence, means a cornerstone in the full improvement of the subject. - NEGOTIATION: through the elaboration of a project in groups, the student must negotiate with the rest of his/her classmates in order to achieve a best-quality result. - DECISION TAKING: this requires a fundamental role when carrying out typical tasks of the subject, from the writing of texts to the more ambitious creation of a collective project. 4. OBJETIVOS: As specified in the official description, the aim of this subject is the acquisition of reading techniques and the writing of technical texts in English. This general goal materializes in the following objectives: - To revise and consolidate the strategies of reading and writing of technical texts already studied in first year. - To revise and consolidate grammatical knowledge in English already acquired in previous official education by the student. - To become aware of the diverse textual typologies and acquire them in order to be able to produce different text types. - To revise and consolidate the technique of consulting different kinds of dictionaries, namely bilingual, monolingual, general, specific and on-line. - To revise and consolidate the phonetic tools for the correct pronunciation of English language. - To acquire correct habits of individual study, team work and handing in of exercises and tasks. - To develop the discipline, the maturity and the student autonomy with regards to his/her own learning. - To develop the capacity to relate to her/his academic environment in a suitable, correct and well-mannered form. 5. TÉCNICAS DOCENTES Sesiones académicas teóricas Tutorías especializadas: X Sesiones académicas prácticas X DESARROLLO Y JUSTIFICACIÓN: X Reports: X Otros: activities downloaded in Moodle * Theoretical academic sessions: this subject consists of 31,5 presence sessions, of which 21 will be taught as theoretical at a rate of 2 hours a week. In these sessions students will acquire the knowledge and the basic skills necessary to autonomously study and to carry out the planned tasks in a satisfactory way. For such end, students will have at their disposal the following means: - Explanations and practice developed in presence sessions. - Printed material prepared for them at the beginning of the semester. - Recommended bibliography at the library of the Campus. - Various electronic means used for the teacher as a better form of presenting tasks. At the beginning of the semester, the lessons will be taught both in English and Spanish until students become used to the vocabulary and main structures needed for the proper understanding of the sessions. Therefore, from the 5 th week the presence sessions will entirely be in English. * Practical academic sessions: the subject will also be composed of 10,5 practically oriented hours, which will start in the third week of the semester. In the first and introductory session of the subject, students will have to sit a general test by which the teacher will determine the different levels of English in the classroom. With such information, the groups of practical sessions will be organized. In these sessions, the student will reinforce knowledge and skills already treated in theoretical sessions as well as in his/her personal study according to their individual level of English. Such work will be carried out by means of activities based on texts intended for this end, done with the help and assistance of the teacher. * Collective specialized tutorials: these lessons will be devoted to different kinds of activities, from the introduction to the subject during the first week to the attention to those students undertaking team work. * Teamwork: students, organized in groups between 7 and 10 members, will have to write a user s manual for an imaginary program that they will have to work out. Each of them will be responsible of one of the utilities of it. Besides, one of them will have to be the representative of the project and will be in charge of organizing meetings with the teacher, putting in order the doubts, questions and other possible eventualities that may take place. This project can optionally be defended in theoretical sessions. This user s manual will have to be submitted, without exception, one week before the exam. 4

5 Additionally, students will have to share the writing of a report in groups of three. * Study hours: these hours are mainly devoted to both the preparation of the exam and the optional exposition of the program user s manual during theoretical academic sessions. * Preparation of personal work: given the idiosyncratic nature of the learning process of a language, the main amount of hours of personal study should be uniformly distributed and put into effect by the student throughout the semester, by focusing on the preparation and revision of presence hours (both theoretical and practical) as well as in the preparation for reading and work reports that students will have to submit to the teacher twice a month. Any written work prepared by the students will have to follow instructions of a style sheet proposed by the teacher. As the comprehension process and the analysis of syntactic, lexical and textual features are essentially complex, the number of texts covered in presence lessons is reduced. For such reason, it is indispensable the autonomous work of the student in which s/he will have to apply what has been comprised in class to other texts that will be proposed throughout the semester. * Written exam: the exam will last 2 hours. Various suggestions and activities will be proposed in Moodle as voluntary work. At the beginning of the academic year, the office hours (6 hours a week) will be made public so that the student can solve doubts and ask further assistance of the teacher regarding academic issues. 7. BLOQUES TEMÁTICOS In the learning process of a language, there are unfailingly three main steps, all of them necessary, interlinked and independent regarding the continuous development of the student: Grammatical axis: this is the basis of the subject, without which the student cannot understand and appropriately follow the sessions. Along the semester, the student will have to review and strengthen her/his knowledge of grammar. Identification axis: based on the recognition of the structure of different technical texts and their main features, from the controlled analysis and reading of such texts to the autonomous reading and study of them. Production axis: starting from autonomous reading, the student will have first to imitate and then create a number of texts related to computing world. 8. ISBN: TÉCNICAS DE EVALUACIÓN The acquisition of a language is a continuous process, which the student is intended to constantly foll ow along the semester. Therefore, students must bear in mind that their work and attitude are constantly assessed during presence hours. However, as the number of students is too large, reliance on the final exam is also necessary. Final examination, which will include theoretical and practical sessions: 50 % Group work: 20 % Work reports (twice a month): 20% Activities proposed through moodle and voluntary presentation: 10 % Delivery time required by the teacher will be strictly applied. Students will have to carry out group work in order to be evaluated. All parts, except for voluntary activities and those proposed in moodle will have to be independently passed. Attendance is not a requisite for passing the exam, but it is strongly recommended. It will have consistency in the final mark in dubious cases, both for raising and lowering the definitive mark. Only activities specified as optional can be freely chosen by students. The exam and the rest of activities must compulsory be sit in order to be evaluated. Criterios de evaluación y calificación: COMPETENCIAS GENÉRICAS: Oral and written communication: continuously evaluated by the progressive development of the linguistic skills of reading y writing. Likewise, by means of the student s listening capacity and oral participation in presence sessions. Knowledge of English: evaluated through the gradual evolution of the student in the planned activities for both presence and non-presence sessions. 7

8 Capacity of analysis and synthesis: evaluated through the correction of exercises based on the close reading of the texts. Capacity of organization and planning: assessed by the correction of complementary tasks requiring that the student proficiently manages his/her time of non-presence work. Capacity to manage information: evaluated by correcting activities of writing. Decision-making: evaluated in the specialized tutorials with groups and by correcting the projects (program user s manual). Team work: assessed by specialized tutorials with each group. Work in an international context: evaluated by activity correction in the classroom and the grade of implication of the student with the activities proposed. Abilities in interpersonal relationships: assessed by direct observation of students in the classroom and in tutorials. Also evaluated through the reports that have to be periodically handed in. Critical reasoning: evaluated through activity correction in the classroom, reports, teamwork and in the exam. Ethical compromise: this competence is assessed by the student compromise with the subject, with the work s/he has to daily carry out and with honesty in her/his behaviour both with his/her mates in group work and with the teacher. Autonomous learning: evaluated by the proposed activities for individual work and voluntary exercises. Creativity: this competence is assessed by examining activities, both individual and in groups, in which the student must create texts in English. Initiative and enterprising attitude: evaluated by means of voluntary exercises, active participation in the activities developed in presence sessions, especially in practical hours. Motivation for quality and continuous improvement: evaluated through a better presentation of activities and the realization of voluntary tasks. Capacity to apply theoretical knowledge to practice: assessed by the production activities based on theoretical grounds Capacity to communicate with people amateur in the discipline: evaluated by activities designed for such end.
