1 Issue January 2015 QEH Junior School 9 Upper Berkeley Place, Clifton, Bristol BS 1JS Tel: From The Headmaster I would like to congratulate all the boys in Year 6 who sat the entrance assessments for QEH Senior School last Saturday. Whilst I wait to hear the results, and will not do so until after this weekend when another boys from outside schools will be sitting the tests, I heard that they all acquitted themselves well and worked hard on the day. They can only do their best, which I am sure will be good enough. Let us hope that they did. Junior Friends committee meeting; Monday 19 th January, at QEH Junior School, starting at 6.30 p.m. Although it is a committee meeting, it is open to all parents, so do please come if you can. Key events coming up; Friday 23 rd January; The QE Shield. An invitation cross-country event which we are hosting at Failand. There will be 9 schools taking part, with races for U8, U9 and U10 boys and girls. QEH will have joint teams with Red Maids JS. The first race starts at 2.15 p.m. Thursday 12 th February Annual Music Concert, held in the QEH theatre, starting at 6.30 p.m. This will feature the winners of the different categories from the House Music Competition held earlier in the week, and also the House Song, always a highlight. This involves all pupils. Tickets will become available soon, so book early as seats will be at a premium. There will be no charge for tickets, but there will be a retiring collection in aid of this term s charity which is The Royal National Children s Foundation. Saturday 28 th February; QEH Junior School will be hosting the South-West regional qualifiers of the English Primary Schools Chess Championships. This will be all day, and involve teams at U9 and U11. Teams are made up of 6 players, each player playing at least 5 matches against other schools. Last year there were over 20 schools who took part. Teams will be selected based on performances in the House Trophy last term and Chess club this term, during which the boys will be competing in the Big UK Chess Challenge. 2 House Chess Trophy st Joint winners; Carr and Hartnell 3 rd Bird 4 th Ramsey Bristol and District Triathlon Junior Champion Congratulations to Rufus Thomas (Year 6) for being crowned Junior Champion of the Bristol and District Triathlon Club (one of the country s largest and best) following his outstanding performances throughout the season competing nationally all over the country in Triathlon (swimming, cycling and running) events. This is an wonderful achievement, and the school is very proud of Rufus. Geogathon Many congratulations to the following boys who all scored 100% on the challenging geography quiz. Year 3; Jacob Hewitt, Joseph Weatherill Year 4; Rhys Jones Year 5; Archie Joslin Year 6; Rupert Everingham, Ben Hewitt, George Houlden, Xavier Adams, Charlie Dashfield, Harry Firebrace, Edward Hunt, Michael Johnson, Joseph Keattch, George Rawlinson, Joel Tomkies-Flash The QEH JS Inventor of the Year competition Boys were invited to submit inventions that are practical and useful, either outside or in the home. There were some super ideas, and nicely presented. The joint winners were; Benji Fackrell; for his inventive eco-car. Harry Firebrace; for his electric shoe-polisher. He actually submitted a working model! (Hence, my shoes are cleaner than normal at the moment). And special mention should be made of the U10 A team that went through the season unbeaten, a tremendous achievement bearing in mind the fixture list we now have, and the relatively small number they have to select from.

3 The Julian Trust Night Shelter Christmas Appeal Thank you to all the parents who supported both the Cabaret Evening on the final Thursday which was a hugely successful and enjoyable evening, and the lovely Carol Service on the final afternoon. The combined monies raised by the retiring collections exceeded 600, which was sent off to the Julian Trust prior to Christmas. We have had some wonderful comments back expressing their thanks and deep appreciation. Read for my School The national online school reading competition, 'Read for my School' starts on Monday and runs until Friday 20 March. The competition is designed to encourage children to read more books from a wider variety of genres. As in previous years, each boy has his own login account which enables him to access the online books. This year, the titles can be read on tablets, Kindles and smartphones, not just computers. Boys can also register books they read offline, and add these to their online account. Details of each boy's personal login will sent home next week along with more information. The competition website can be found at Sports Update The season starts with the U8s and U9s travelling to Kingswood Bath on Monday afternoon for a festival, with both Kingswood and KES, Bath. We will return at 4.45pm and there will be no cricket club. Your support as always is welcome. Please wrap up warm as it can be very cold on the touchline!!! On Wednesday all of Year 6 will be travelling to Warwick School to play in a football festival against the hosts, The Bluecoat School and Bablake. We will be leaving school at 10.30am and hosted for lunch and post-match tea by Warwick School. We will return at approximately 6pm and collection should be from the theatre. On Friday we will be holding our 2 nd Annual Inter Schools Cross Country event for the QEH Shield, the year 6 boys will be hosting, marshalling and acting as runners for the races and the rest of the school, who are not involved in the event will have games as normal. I am attaching a letter to the newsletter about a potential trip to see Bristol City at Wembley, please return to the school office as soon as possible if you are interested.

5 Dear Parents, Trip to Wembley 22 nd March 2015 JPT Trophy Final Lads and Dads / Mums and Sons trip As some of you may be aware Bristol City are only 90 minutes away from a trip to Wembley on the 22 nd March. I am writing to find out if there is any interest in trying to get a block booking of tickets for boys and parents, as well as travelling on an executive coach to and from Wembley. The trip is of course depended on Bristol City beating Gillingham and also the availability of tickets. If you would be interested in the coming along, please complete the form below and return it to the School Office as soon as possible. The tickets will be assigned on a first come first served basis with priority being given to boys and parents from the school. Should any more be available I will open it out to siblings.
