SOURCE A CHRISTIAN MARRIAGE The Ring - a Symbol of: a vow or promise made everlasting love joined together forever I give you this ring as a symbol of my love and of our marriage The vow: until death do us part The reasons: - part of God s plan for all people - to have children - to have close friendship - to control sexual desires SOURCE B Many Muslim couples have arranged marriages SOURCE C If a married couple have problems that cannot be sorted out the Muslim religion allows divorce. This question tests Knowledge and Understanding. 2 marks Award 2 marks for correct order only 1st Palm Sunday 2nd Maundy Thursday 3rd Good Friday 4th Easter Sunday 2. This question tests Knowledge and Understanding. 1 mark Award 1 mark for a simple response e.g. Jesus was killed / crucified 3. This question tests Evaluation. 3 marks Level 1 award 1 mark for a simple answer which refers to Jesus coming alive again Level 2 award 2/3 marks for a more elaborate answer which demonstrates a fuller understanding of Christian belief. Candidates may mention that Jesus rose from the dead to bring new life or to save mankind from sin. 4. This question tests Knowledge, Understanding and Evaluation. 4 marks (a) (b) Award 1 mark for one correct item e.g. food Level 1 - award 1 mark for a simple answer e.g. it s good for people to go without food as they can save money for others Level 2 - award 2/3 marks for a more elaborate answer which demonstrates a full understanding of the purpose of fasting during Ramadan. This question tests Knowledge and Understanding. 2 marks Award 1 2 mark for each correct answer (a) (b) (c) (d) font. altar. pulpit. lectern. 2. This question tests Knowledge and Understanding. 2 marks Award one mark for each point made on how it is used in worship e.g. a font is used in a baptism ceremony, a lectern is used for reading the Bible from. 3. This question tests Knowledge and Understanding. 2 marks One mark for each correct answer. (a) (b) imam. minaret. 4. This question tests Evaluation. 3 marks Level 1 award 1 mark for a simple answer which may mention one underdeveloped point e.g. Women can worship at home. Level 2 award 2/3 marks for a better explained answer which contains at least two developed points e.g. Womens main job is to care for the family at home. Womens role is less public than a man. This question tests Knowledge and Understanding. 2 marks (a) (b) (c) (d) The Bible. Old Testament/New Testament. The Qur an. Arabic. 2. This question tests Knowledge and Understanding. 4 marks Award 1 mark for each correct answer to (a) and (b). (a) (b) (c) Bible: read church by priest/minister as part of service. Qur an: studied by children in mosque class. Award one mark for each alternative e.g. Bible: in court, private study. 3. This question tests Knowledge and Understanding. 2 marks Level 1 award 1 mark for yes plus simple explanation e.g. its their language Level 2 award 2 marks for yes plus fuller explanation e.g. no exact translations, the prophet spoke Arabic. 4. This question tests Evaluation. 2 marks Level 1 award 1 mark for a limited response where student may answer Yes/No with little reasoning. Level 2 award 2 marks for a more detailed response with elaboration or detail referring to teachings, laws, advice etc. MARKSCHEMES Page 4

This question tests Knowledge and Understanding. 1 mark Award 1 mark for any one of answers contained in Source A e.g. symbol of a vow or promise made. 2. This question tests Knowledge and Understanding. 2 marks Level 1 - award 1 mark for a simple statement e.g. that the couple should stay together until one of them dies. Level 2 - award 2 marks if an extra point is made e.g. no divorce or separation/commitment for life. 3. This question tests Evaluation. 4 marks (a) (b) 1 mark for correct answer. e.g. family selects marriage partner. Level 1 award 1 mark for a response limited to simplistic statements which may show little understanding of connection with religious belief. Level 2 award 2-3 marks for a response which will include a number of reasons that will probably refer to importance of marriage and family life, keeping faith strong, older family members are more wise etc. 4. This question tests Evaluation. 3 marks Level 1 1 mark Limited response which may not be able to discuss both parts of the question but at the higher level of the mark band will clearly demonstrate some religious understanding of the issue. Level marks A longer response which may include a number of reasons Muslims give for and against divorce or a deeper understanding will be shown on a couple of reasons. MARKSCHEMES Page 5
