1 E-resources at the University Of Greenwich All students must learn how to access and use e-resources. Journals, books, newspapers and other types of material are available in an electronic format and this guide is a brief introduction to using e-journals and e-books. Please ask your subject librarian if you require further help. Accessing online journal resources. To access online journal resources you will need a computing username (e.g. mm25) and a password. If you are unsure about your login details please ask a member of Drill Hall Library staff. There are two approaches to accessing online resources for University of Greenwich students: a. You have a reference to a particular article (perhaps from a reading list or from the references contained in another article) and would like to see if you can access the article online (see below). b. You do not have a particular article in mind but you would like to locate articles on a specific subject using keywords (go to page 6). a. Accessing articles from a reference. e.g. Woods, M. (2008) Social movements and rural politics, Journal of Rural Studies, 24 (2), pp Go to the Student Portal and log in using your computing username and password: 1

2 2. Now click on the Library & IT tab at the top: 3. Select Databases, Journals and e-books from the e-library channel: 2

3 4. Click on S and then select Swetswise from the list of databases: 5. Drop down from All content and choose Publications: 6. Enter the title of the journal you are looking for e.g. Journal of Rural Studies and press Search. 3

4 7. If the journal is available via Swetswise it should appear below. Click on the title: 8. Now use the reference (volume, issue and page details) to locate the specific article. In this case Volume 24, Issue 2, pages 129 to 137. Click on View Full Text: 4

5 9. Follow the link in the SciVerse database in order to Download PDF. 10. You should now be able to read the article. If you would like to print or download the article it is best to open it as a PDF document if you have the option: NOTE: If you cannot find the article via Swetswise you should check the Drill Hall Library catalogue to see if the hard copy of the journal is available or electronic access is offered through another database. 5

6 b. To locate articles on a specific subject using keywords. 1. Go to the Drill Hall Library Subject Guides page ( to see the subject guide for your subject: 6

7 2. Now click on the link in your subject guide to see a list of databases recommended for their relevance to your subject area: Make a note of them. 3. Now go to the Student Portal and follow steps 1-3 above (pages 1-2). 4. Select one of the databases to begin searching for articles by keyword. 5. Look for help facilities within each database or ask your Subject Librarian for advice to get the best out of each database. You can send a message to your Librarian directly: select your course, enter your message and click Submit. 7

8 Electronic books Choose MyiLibrary from the list of databases Write your search term(s) in Search 8

9 From your list of results click on Open now to retrieve the full text of an e-book: You can navigate easily to a particular chapter or page. Use Search if you need to find a specific phrase or word in the text. 9
