3 About our Programmes The Irish College of Humanities & Applied Sciences is an independent third level college that prides itself on its student centred approach. ICHAS provides an academic environment that fosters personalised learning, enabling participants to develop their potential for life and for exciting careers in their chosen areas of practice. All ICHAS programmes are accredited and awarded by Quality and Qualifications Ireland (QQI) and are on the National Framework of Qualifications. Our programmes combine theoretical knowledge with practical application and address areas that employers, professional organisations and statutory agencies require. Most of all, our programmes have been completely reviewed and updated in 2015 to ensure they meet the exacting award standards of QQI. Most importantly programmes have been specifically designed to meet the needs of modern students, accommodating those who wish to study either part time or full time. ICHAS programmes utilise blended learning, which combines traditional face-to-face lecturing with online learning. This facilitates a greater work/life/study balance and allows students to work at a pace that suits them. For some modules which are skills based, classroom based attendance is required and for other modules which are theory based, the student can avail of the option of attending virtually, minimising the need for travel and allowing students to study from the comfort of their own home. Access to our Programmes: Applications for all programmes are processed either through the CAO system as below or for direct entry applicants, through the submission of a completed application form. Please see our website at for application forms and information CAO: This access route applies only to applicants under the age of 23 (on January 1st of the year of entry) who wish to apply to the first year of any of the QQI validated full-time undergraduate programmes. The closing date for CAO applications for EU citizens is February 1st, while late applications will be accepted until May 1st. 22 Irish College of Humanities & Applied Sciences B.A. in Counselling Skills & Addiction Studies B.A. in Counselling Skills & Addiction Studies Programme Overview: Addiction affects all areas of our society at all levels and its effects on individuals, families and society in general can be devastating. Having trained professionals in this area as part our national strategy to reduce addiction and supporting those who are striving towards recovery and their families is a core part of health and social strategy. In areas such as youth service provision and community welfare provision, those with these specific skills in addiction work are becoming more and more in demand. Many organisation s are now recognising the need to have employees with these skills as part of their service provision. Over the period of 3 years, the programme builds to develop competent professionals in counselling and addiction. The lecturing team on the programme are themselves leading professionals in the area of addiction services. The College policy is to work with small class sizes, allowing us to focus on the individual students and their learning needs. We have a strong commitment to providing appropriate individual support to students on their educational journey. All students are required to complete 100 hours of supervised direct client work. Students have the option of completing Personal Psychotherapeutic Experience which allows them to work towards their professional accreditation. Duration: This programme is run over a 3 year period on a fulltime or part-time basis Entry Requirements: The B.A in Counselling Skills and Addiction Studies is open to all those with a leaving certificate standard of education. The programme can be accessed through the CAO or directly through the college. Those with relevant experience will also be considered through APL/ RPL. Non CAO applicants are also required to complete a short interview. All applicants are expected to be fluent and competent in both written and spoken English. For overseas applications students will have to provide certification of competency in English indicating a minimum score of 5.5 IELTS or equivalent. Assessment: The programme has been designed to enable learners to demonstrate their academic and reflective learning in appropriate ways. The assessment strategy accommodates different learning styles and therefore the programme assesses learners using a range of practical assignments, essays, learning journals, examinations, reflective exercises and projects. Teaching and Learning Approach: The course uses both classroom based and blended learning techniques. This allows the learner to access classes in person or using on-line facilities. In certain modules attendance in person may be a requirement.
