AM Buried With Christ, Raised With Christ Romans 6:3-8 AKA: Baptism and the Resurrection
Easter 2014
My Heart s Focus The three-fold act of Jesus Death, Burial & Resurrection for me.
Without a Doubt The most important series of events in the history of the world are the Death, the Burial and the Resurrection of Jesus. These three inseparable acts are the very foundation of The Faith.
But Why? Did you ever ask yourself WHY Christ died on a Cross, was buried for 3 days and rose again from the grave? Did you ever wonder if it has meaning for you?
Our Sacrificial Lamb Jesus needed to be sacrificed, as a lamb led to slaughter, (Isaiah 53), as Isaiah s son was nearly sacrificed (Gen. 22) to satisfy God s Justice. We needed Him to be our sin offering. (Rom. 8:3) For what the Law could not do, weak as it was through the flesh, God {did:} sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and {as an offering} for sin (NAS)
Fulfilled Prophecy He had to be crucified, like Moses serpent in the wilderness (Num. 21), pierced through even as David prophesied (Ps. 22), and mourned as the Prophet Zachariah clearly foretold. (See Below) Zech 12:10- so that they will look on Me whom they have pierced; and they will mourn for Him, as one mourns for an only son, and they will weep bitterly over Him, like the bitter weeping over a first-born.
Superiority of Christ s Death 1 Pet 3:18 - For Christ also died for sins once for all, {the} Just for {the} Unjust, in order that He might bring us to God, having been put to death in the flesh, but made alive in the spirit; Heb 10:10 - By this will we have been sanctified through the offering of the Body of Jesus Christ once for all.
My Freedom at His Expense Literally, my Jesus bought man s freedom from the slavery of sin by accepting on Himself the punishment rightfully due mankind. The wages of sin is death (Rom. 6:23a) 1 Pet 1:18-19 knowing that you were not redeemed with perishable things like silver or gold from your futile way of life inherited from your forefathers, but with precious blood, as of a lamb unblemished and spotless, {the blood} of Christ.
By Virtue of His Resurrection Jesus proved Himself to be The WAY, The TRUTH and the LIFE (John 14:6). The DOOR to Heaven (John 10:7-10). The FIRST FRUIT of the Resurrection. (1 Cor. 15:20) The One who holds ALL AUTHORITY over mankind s last & greatest enemy, death itself. (1 Cor. 15:20-26).
The Saving Gospel Model Today and every day, the Death, Burial, and Resurrection of our Lord stands as the very Foundation of the Faith and the original source and model of the very Gospel by which we are saved. (1 Cor. 15:1-4).
Luke 23:23-26 Luke 23: But they were insistent, with loud voices asking that Jesus be crucified. And their voices {began} to prevail. And Pilate pronounced sentence that their demand should be granted.
Golgotha Luke 24:33 Luke 23:33 - And when they came to the place called The Skull, there they crucified Him and the criminals, one on the right and the other on the left He was numbered with the transgressors (Isaiah 53:12).
Today you shall be with me in Paradise Luke 23:42-43
Matthew 27:51-53 Matt 27:51 The veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom, and the earth shook; and the rocks were split
Ex. 12:46; John 19:36
Isa. 53:9; Mt. 27:57 And they made his grave with the wicked, and with a rich man in his death.
On The First Day of the Week Matthew 12:40; 16:21; John 2:19
The Women at the Tomb They took the Good News to the Apostles (Luke 24:10), and the Apostle took it to the world (Mt. 28:18-20; Acts 1:3-11).
The Good News The Gospel = Good News - because it provides: 1) The promise of the forgiveness of our sins, 2) A restored fellowship with God, 3) Hope beyond death, 4) The promise of eternal life in Heaven.
The Good News Jesus: Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature. He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned.
The Good News Jesus: Matt 28: And Jesus came up and spoke to them, saying, All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.
Acts 2: Brethren, I may confidently say to you regarding the patriarch David that he both died and was buried, and his tomb is with us to this day. 30 "And so, because he was a prophet, and knew that God had sworn to him with an oath to seat {one} of his descendants upon his throne,
Acts 2: he looked ahead and spoke of the resurrection of the Christ, that He was neither abandoned to Hades, nor did His flesh suffer decay. 32 "This Jesus God raised up again, to which we are all witnesses.
Acts 2: Therefore let all the house of Israel know for certain that God has made Him both Lord and Christ-- this Jesus whom you crucified. 37 Now when they heard {this} they were pierced to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, Men and Brethren, what shall we do?
Acts 2: And Peter {said} to them, Repent, and let each of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39 For the promise is for you and your children, and for all who are far off, as many as the Lord our God shall call to Himself.
The Gospel of Jesus Our Lord commanded that His Gospel be preached to everyone, everywhere. Because it is HIS-tory. Because it is OUR story. Because it is the ONE TRUE WAY to be saved and go to Heaven.
Death to Sin - Repentance The Lord is not slow about His promise, as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing for any to perish but for all to come to repentance. (2 Pet 3:9) 1 Pet 2:24-- He Himself bore our sins in His body on the cross, that we might die to sin and live to righteousness; for by His wounds you were healed.
Death to Sin - Repentance John 4:10 - In this is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us, and sent his Son to be the propitiation (satisfaction) for our sins.
Burial With Christ -Baptism Buried With Him Col 2:12 having been buried with Him in baptism, in which you were also raised up with Him through faith in the working of God, who raised Him from the dead.
Burial With Christ -Baptism Buried With Him Rom 6:4 Therefore we have been buried with Him through baptism into death, in order that as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, so we too might walk in newness of life.
One who is Buried with Christ in Baptism will be Raised With Christ today and ultimately in Eternity.
Rom. 6:3-8 3 Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus have been baptized into His death? 4 Therefore we have been buried with Him through baptism into death, in order that as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, so we too might walk in newness of life.
Rom. 6:3-8 5 For if we have become united with {Him} in the likeness of His death, certainly we shall be also {be united with Him} in the likeness of His resurrection, 6 knowing this, that our old self was crucified with {Him,} that our body of sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves to sin; 7 for he who has died is freed from sin.
Rom. 6:3-8 8 Now if we have died with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with Him.
*Do I NEED to Obey the Gospel? 2 Thess. 1:7-9 says- "When the Lord Jesus is revealed from Heaven with his mighty angels, in flaming fire, [He will take] vengeance on those who do not know God, & on those*who do not obey the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ, [These he says will] be punished with everlasting destruction, separated from the presence of the Lord, and from the glory of his power. [Man s only hope]
Only In Baptism Only in baptism do we see the whole story played out so clearly. Only in baptism do we recreate the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus. Only in baptism do we die with Jesus that we might be raised with Him to walk in newness of life.
Rom. 6: "Thanks be to God that though you were slaves of sin, you became obedient from the heart to that form of teaching to which you were committed What form? (The death, burial and resurrection form of teaching)
Rom. 6:17-18 Reminding us again that in Baptism 18 having been freed from sin, you became slaves of righteousness.
Have You Obeyed the Gospel? Question: Have you obeyed the Gospel/ Have you been baptized into His death, being buried in baptism with him and then being raised with Him up out of the watery grave of baptism to walk in newness of life?
Have You Obeyed the Gospel? What better day to be raised with Jesus? Don't put it off. Satan wants you to put it off, until it s too late and your life ends in an unsaved condition Don t let that happen to you. Almost 2,000 years ago Jesus died at Calvary to fulfill God s perfect plan, provide mankind with access to God s forgiveness of sins, and to offer you a new life in Him. Will you be baptized today?
