The course drills pronunciation, vocabulary building and elementary grammar and composition. Cultural aspects of Hispanic populations will be discussed. 2 Course Learning Outcomes: As a result of taking this course, the student will be able to: Demonstrate knowledge of elementary Spanish vocabulary, conversational patterns and usage by employing Spanish in classroom discussions. Interpret and demonstrate correct usage of Spanish and English grammatical structures, verbs, idioms and vocabulary at the basic level. Illustrate knowledge of the language by submitting written assignments and oral presentations. Recognize the Hispanic cultural heritage and the role it plays in today s world. Demonstrate the use of technology through the use of on- line component exercises, tutorials and cultural activities on line and by submitting assignments and s on line. Class Information This course will be conducted entirely online through the Blackboard Learning System. All communication between the professor and students will take place through Blackboard, as will all course activities, assignments, discussions, and exams. Academic Dishonesty Policy and Penalty for Violation: Academic dishonesty of any kind will result in a zero on the assignment. Any and all cases of academic dishonesty will be promptly reported to the Dean of Academic Affairs and the Dean of Student Services. 3 Class Policies Attendance: Professors are required to take attendance. You are expected to be serious, thoughtful and responsible. Be very conscious of your attendance and obligations. Students are expected to adjust their schedules to accommodate the time required to complete the class. If you do not have significant, daily, time available to dedicate to the course, you may find it difficult to keep up. Learning a language is difficult, and somewhat more difficult online than in the classroom. Online attendance should be regular, at least three times a week. Ideally, you should check the course site every day. In order to understand and really learn the concepts, it is best to do the assignments throughout the week - not in one sitting at the last minute! If you should run into a technical problem, it is difficult, if not impossible, to get help at 10:00 pm on a Friday night. It is best to stay slightly ahead in the course so that if you get sick or have any kind of family emergency, you won't miss any deadlines. Electronic Device Use and Policy: You will need access to a computer for this course. Students are responsible for checking their PBSC e- mail and course mail regularly, as I communicate changes, announcements, and other information through e- mail and Blackboard. I will only contact you through your Palm Beach State account. It is your responsibility to make sure your is working. Late Assignment Policy: Late work will NOT BE ACCEPTED unless you have consulted me in advance with an acceptable reason. Make- up Exam Policy: Please take all exams and complete all assignments, tests, and activities at the designated time. There will be NO MAKE- UPS. In the event of an emergency or serious illness, please notify me before the due date and provide documented evidence. Withdrawal Policy: It is the student's responsibility to withdraw by contacting the registrar. I reserve the right to withdraw any student from the class due to non- attendance/participation. Professor s Expectations When taking an online course the student needs to be an independent learner and possess superior time-management skills. The student is expected to: * login to course website during first week of class (if you do not login before the first assignment due date, the assignment will not be accepted) * remain in contact with the instructor as necessary * check course website discussion board and at least three times a week * be aware of all course announcements and due dates * read the assigned pages in the textbook * read the course notes posted on the course web site * complete all assigned exercises * complete and submit all homework/projects/tests on time The professor does not provide technical support. If you have difficulty with technology, you should consider whether online courses will meet your needs. It is expected that students in online classes will have superior computer skills and use the technical support available to them through the various publishers. Template Date July

4 The amount of time spent on the course depends on the type of learner you are, what your level of proficiency is, and your desire to learn. Only you can determine how much time to spend, but you should expect to spend about 8-10 hours a week on this course. Before you start this course, be sure you can devote the correct amount of time to the subject. Be sure to take into account other course work, your work schedule (including travel), your family life, and any other factors that may influence your study time. You are the most important factor in the formula for your success. To succeed you must put in maximum effort and communicate with the instructor and fellow students. When using a computer for any kind of work you must always be prepared for an emergency. It is up to the student to find alternate ways to get to a computer when his or hers goes down. "Computer broken" or "can't login to ISP" are not acceptable excuses. The professor will help with understanding the course material, but cannot diagnose computer problems or provide technical support. The course website is our primary classroom. Appropriate conduct is required as it is in a classroom environment. You may not post messages on the discussion board that use foul or abusive language. Postings of this nature will result in immediately being denied access to the course. Otherwise, you are free (and encouraged) to use the discussion boards and functions. Rules of Netiquette must be followed. This course has an Internet web site located at: The course web site will be available the first day of the start of the semester. Your password will not work until that time. It is the student's responsibility to have accessed this site no later than the last day of add/drop period, although students are very strongly urged to access the course on the first day of classes, just as with a traditional, classroom-based course. The web site has a security system which requires a Sign on and a Password. Only registered students will be able to access the course. If you do not have a student ID card, you can obtain one in the bookstore at Lake Worth campus. For obtaining a student ID card on other campuses, check with the campus directly. 9 College Policies and Web Information Palm Beach State College Academic Dishonesty Academic dishonesty includes the following actions, as well as other similar conduct aimed at making false representation with respect to the student's academic performance: (1) Cheating on an exam, (2) Collaborating with others on work to be presented, if contrary to the stated rules of the course, (3) Submitting, if contrary to the rules of the course, work previously submitted in another course, (4) Knowingly and intentionally assisting another student in any of the above actions, including assistance in an arrangement whereby work, classroom performance, examination, or other activity is submitted or performed by a person other that the student under whose name the work is submitted or performed, (5) Plagiarism. Classroom Etiquette and Student Behavior Guidelines Students will demonstrate respect for professors and fellow students. Behavior that is disruptive to a positive learning environment reported by the professor will result in a warning on the first instance; the second instance might result in expulsion from the course or campus. Computer Competency Component Each student will, to the satisfaction of the professor, demonstrate a fundamental understanding of basic computer operations through various professor- determined exercises and/or assignments. Disability Support Services Students with disabilities are advised, in compliance with federal and state laws, that accommodations and services are available through the office of Disability Support Services (DSS). It is the student's responsibility to contact Disabled Student Services Advisors and to submit appropriate documentation prior to receiving services. Smoking is not permitted in any College building and only in areas designated at each campus. Final Course Grade Appeal The evaluation of academic work is the responsibility of the faculty member/instructor. The method for assigning the final course grade is established by the faculty member/instructor. Per Board Rule 6Hx , faculty/instructors shall communicate the grading policy of the course to their students in writing. If this policy changes during the term, students should be notified of any changes in writing. The method to determine final course grades must be given to students in a course syllabus at the beginning of the class. Should a student have a question about a final course grade, please follow the procedures as outlined in the student handbook: Mid- Term Grade Reporting Within one week after the close of the mid- term grading period, mid- term grades will be made available to all students for each class by either written notification or individual conference. Student Responsibility Policy When a student attends the College, s/he becomes subject to its jurisdiction. Students are expected to conduct themselves in a responsible manner, in all areas of campus life. By enrolling, they pledge to obey the rules and regulations of the College and are responsible for observing all College policies and procedures as published in the student handbook, the College catalog and other College publications. The student will be responsible for preparing for class, participating in class, and completing assignments on time. 10 Distance Learning Requirements Palm Beach State College Computer Systems Your computer system resources must be compatible with the Learning Management System (LMS) used to deliver/manage course content.
