1 BACKGROUND INFORMATION Year 4 class 32 children Children range in NC attainment levels from 2B to 4C. They are arranged into 3 ability levels for Numeracy and always move just before the start of the Numeracy lesson to their particular place/group. Previously children arranged their classroom so that they were seated in rows (their preferred choice because they explained that it was much easier to have full access to the ACTIVboard). We discussed as a class advantages and disadvantages of working in a group. It had been sometime since the children had worked in groups and we decided as a class in order to promote speaking and listening we would try for a term with the seating arrangements in groups. Throughout the last few weeks the children have been allocated a talk partner (for all subjects) and there has been a strong focus on the use of correct mathematical vocabulary within the Numeracy lesson (and linking it to other areas of the curriculum) when questioning or sharing/explaining strategies/methods/solutions. All the children had previously participated in a number of lessons where each of the rotating activities were used. (back to back activities) Organise their roles (with partner before moving to group discussion and interaction) Speaking encourages children to explain a process, ensuring relevant details are included. - sustain conversation, explaining or giving reasons - use mathematical language Listening to listen carefully, ask relevant questions and follow instructions - gain an understanding of ground roles for dialogue

Objectives shared with the children. To explain a process clearly using mathematical vocabulary To listen carefully and follow instructions accurately To evaluate how effective speaking and listening was in our Numeracy lesson. Teacher to quickly remind children of the activities. (Teacher to move around the class and support children during activities. This will also give the teacher the opportunity to assess the children s speaking and listening and use of mathematical vocabulary). Share with the children the self-evaluation questions that we will be sharing in the plenary session. Have these questions on display throughout the lesson
3 ROTATING ACTIVITIES TIME LIMIT IS GIVEN FOR CHILDREN TO EXPERIENCE EACH STATION. AT THE CHANGE OVER CHILDREN ARE FOCUSED ON TO THE QUESTIONS FOR THE PLENARY SESSION. The following activities are for paired work seating back to back. ACTIVITY 1. LINK ME Resources = Multilink cubes (different colours) Each pair has a set of 5 coloured multilink cubes. They take it in turn to construct a shape and then relay the information to their partner who has the same coloured cubes and tries to construct them in the same way as their partner. Extension activity incorporate more multilink cubes or use same colour multilink cubes. ACTIVITY 2 PICTURE SHAPE Resources = Whiteboards, pens, range of 2D shapes, (sample of picture cards showing drawings with 2D shapes) One partner either uses the 2D shapes and arranges them on their board. (or they could use the pre-prepared pictured cards). They describe the position of the shapes to their partner who tries to create the same picture using the information they are being given. Extension some mathematical words are not allowed to be used when describing the shape (eg for a right angled triangle, words triangle, three and right angled are not permitted to be used) ACTIVITY 3 DRAW ME Resources whiteboard, pens. One partner draws a picture on their board using 2D shapes (or choose pre-prepared picture card) then they describe their drawing to their partner. Extension can the shapes be drawn using the same proportion? - 3 -
4 ACTIVITY 4 CALCULATION HELP LINE Resources calculation cards, pens, whiteboards, headphones (role play) One child to choose a calculation card and dial up the calculation helpline. The calculation assistant will talk them through solving the calculation using clear mathematical vocabulary. Results are then checked using a calculator by the person requesting the assistance. Differentiation; - Use a pack of playing cards and blank dice with and of or a range of the four operations. One child chooses cards (2 2 digit, or 3 digit and 2 digit or 2 1 digit,). Phones calculation helpline. After each activity the children were allowed some short time to discuss in their group what they liked about the activity and were asked to pass on any handy hints that they thought would be useful to the next group of children. PLENARY In the plenary session the children responded to the following questions and used the information we had shared to write a few sentences in their Numeracy book. How are the activities helping in developing our understanding of Numeracy today? How do you think what we have done today will help in other subjects? Which activity did you find the easiest? Explain why. Which activity did you find the hardest? Explain why. If you redid one of the activities would you change the way you went about explaining it? Why? What do you need to do next? Consolidate or extend? - 4 -
