We are pleased to join the rest of the country in the annual observance that recognizes the generosity of those individuals who said yes to donation. For the 112,000 individuals awaiting an organ transplant, there is no single month for hope. Day after day, they wait knowing that their chance for life and good health depends on the willingness of others to share the gift of life. Last year, data from the United Network of Organ Sharing (UNOS) showed that more than 22,000 lives were saved because damaged and failing hearts, kidneys, livers, lungs and pancreata were replaced. Tissue transplants are used to treat a variety of health problems ranging from blindness to bone cancer. The sad truth is that thousands of additional people could be helped if more people registered as organ donors. We have a lot to celebrate this month and a lot of education that remains to be done, said Gary Burris, LifeShare s Chief Operating Officer. During April, LifeShare will participate in a number of programs to spread the word that transplantation works and that real people s lives are remarkably improved by the gift of donation. One of the highlights is that on April 1st, the Duke Energy building in downtown Charlotte will be lit up in Donate Life blue and green. Area businesses have committed to fly Donate Life flags during April and many of the hospitals in our service area will conduct donor drives A partial list of activities is available under the calendar section of the newsletter. Others will be announced on the LifeShare Of The Carolinas Facebook page. If you d like to help celebrate National Donate Life month, we have posters that are available for area businesses and special business-size cards with a donation message that are available to give to family and friends. To get yours, contact the LifeShare office nearest you at (704) or (828) A Donate Life Organization

2 LifeShare Of The Carolinas GIVE Editor Debbie Gibbs Associate Editor Gary Burris O U R M I S S I O N To improve the quality of human life through the provision of organs and tissues for transplantation and CORNEAL TRANSPLANTS Real Eye Openers One of the most famous corneal transplant recipients in the United States has been working in Charlotte. He s a star in the award-winning Showtime TV series, Homeland. It s Mandy Patinkin who plays Saul in the series along with co-star Claire Danes. People may also remember him from earlier TV shows Chicago Hope and Criminal Minds. Patinkin is one of the approximately 46,000 individuals who receive corneal transplants in the U.S. each year. In fact, there are far more corneal transplants performed annually than any other form of transplant. Since 1960, over 700,000 successful transplants have been performed to cure blindness and to treat eye injuries. Keratoconus, an eye disease that gradually causes the tissue of the cornea to break down and scar, is what caused Patinkin to seek treatment. He received his first corneal transplant in His second, in the other eye, was performed a year later. LifeShare had a record number of cornea donors in 2011, restoring sight to well over 500 individuals. None of them that we know of was a movie star but like Patinkin, their quality of life was significantly improved. To quote him from an interview shortly after his transplant he said of his donors, They not only saved my sight, they gave me an entire new perspective on the enormous generosity of those who understand the value of giving. to serve our hospitals and their respective communities by providing educational and support services which enhance the donation process. O U R V I S I O N We envision a day when the regional supply of transplantable organs and tissues will satisfy the demand. Be Among the First to Get a Donate Life Specialty Plate Each time you drive your car or park in a public space, you can share the message of the life-saving power of registering as an organ, eye and tissue donor. During its past session, the North Carolina Legislature authorized a Donate Life License Plate with proceeds to benefit Donate Life North Carolina, transplant recipients and donor families through the state s five transplant centers. Approximately 100 applications have been received so far but license plate production won t begin until 300 have been sold. A regular Donate Life License plate costs $20. A personalized plate with four customized spaces is $50. Both prices are on top of the regular annual license plate fee. To apply, send a check payable to Donate Life North Carolina at the organization s office: 3900 Westpoint Blvd. Suite F, Winston Salem, NC All checks will be cashed with the funds held in escrow until the first 300 applications are received. 3 SPOTLIGHT ON Melanie Griffith LifeShare s Employee of the Year For the first time ever, LifeShare recognized one of its teammates with the distinguished title of Employee of the Year. Melanie Griffith, who heads up our Eye Bank in Charlotte, was chosen for the 2011 honor. The news came as a surprise to Melanie but as usual, she was humble in accepting the award. It s a big honor for me considering all the special people I work with, she said. In announcing Melanie s selection, Gary Burris, LifeShare s Chief Operating Officer, pointed out that she demonstrates commitment to our Standards of Excellence, is frequently recognized by customers for providing excellent service and that she is always available to help the team. Once, Melanie even responded to requests for help while on vacation in Key West. In her role as a Certified Eye Bank Technician (CEBT), Melanie is responsible for recovering tissue from donors, quality control and even sometimes driving across town to take a cornea to a surgeon for an emergency surgery. Melanie s husband, Dan, also works for LifeShare as a valued member of our tissue team. Melanie was previously awarded the May 2011 LifeShare Employee of the Month. In the numerous nominations she received, Melanie s colleagues commented on her tireless efforts to build relationships, to honor the wishes of donors and their families, and to restore sight to patients who await transplants. Congratulations Melanie. We appreciate all that you do. 4 Promoting Donation... CALENDAR of events March 31, 2012 DMV Ambassador Training Asheville Botanical Gardens 151 W.T. Weaver Blvd. Asheville, NC (Reservations required) April, 2012 National Donate Life Month Nationwide May 22, 2012 Donate Life NC Legislative Day State Capitol Raleigh, NC May 27 June 2, 2012 North Carolina Donation Stories June 2, 2012 Collier Lilly Ride 4 Life Davidson College Davidson, NC MAKING A NATIONAL CAMPAIGN LOCAL LifeShare Supports the 20 Million in 2012 Campaign As previously reported, Donate Life America has launched a bold new campaign for the year, 20 Million in The project focuses on significantly increasing the number of people registered on state donor registries. The official launch was during the Tournament of Roses Parade but the national campaign will continue throughout 2012, featuring powerful stories of those affected by organ, eye and tissue donation. Nationally, there are 100 million registered donors in the United States with 42 percent of individuals age 18 and older registered as organ, eye and tissue donors. We are pleased to report that North Carolina statistics surpass the national average. 52% of licensed drivers in the state have a red heart on their license. Reaching the remaining 48% is our challenge, said Gary Burris, LifeShare s Chief Operating Officer. With that in mind, LifeShare, Donate Life North Carolina and the state s other donor recovery agencies will offer a number of programs this year to try and move the public from simple awareness to action. Our goal is to increase the number of people on the NC Organ Donor Registry by 200,000 during 2012 and for each of the next four years for a total increase of a million. Several initiatives are planned in support of the campaign. One of the most exciting is a flash mob that will already have been held in Charlotte by the time the spring newsletter is delivered. If you re near downtown Charlotte on April 1st, look up! It s no joke. The Duke Energy will be outfitted in blue and green as a kick-off to National Donate Life Month. Look for lots more to come throughout the year in support of the 20 Million in 2012 campaign. For more information, shirsch@donatelifenc.org. The 365 DAYS OF HOPE storytelling project will feature real life stories of people who have been personally touched by donation each day throughout Each week, a different state team will be featured. North Carolina s week is May 27th through June 2nd. Be sure to look for inspiring stories of North Carolinians you may know and some new people you ve yet to meet. We will have them posted on the LifeShare Of The Carolinas Facebook page. In fact, if you haven t already friended LifeShare on Facebook, we hope that you will. Chamber of Commerce Project All Chambers of Commerce in North and South Carolina are being asked to participate in a campaign to increase donor registrations. The project will build on the U.S. Department of Health and Human Resources Work Place Partnership for Life to heighten donor awareness in the workplace. Everyone who goes to work each day can help by asking their employers to support donation. It can be as simple as sending out an blast from the head of the company to inviting LifeShare to participate in a health fair. For more information on how your business can get involved, contact Debbie Gibbs at dgibbs@carolinas.org. Thanks to Marc Jordan, President and CEO of the North Myrtle Beach Chamber of Commerce and Brad Dean, President/CEO of the Myrtle Beach Chamber of Commerce, who initiated the project. Marc received a life-saving heart transplant in 2000 while Brad became a living kidney donor in S P R I N G I S S U E

6 PLANNING A PROGRAM? As your organization plans its meeting calendar for the year, please think of LifeShare. Speakers from your community whose lives have been touched by organ or tissue donation are available to talk to local groups. If you would like to schedule a free, informative presentation tailored to the needs of your organization, call the LifeShare office nearest you at (704) or (828) If you are interested in joining our Speaker s Bureau, we d also like to hear from you. Lots of opportunities are available to help in the office, to staff a booth at a health fair or to make presentations to community groups. Call us. PLEASE CONSIDER MAKING A FINANCIAL CONTRIBUTION By making a donation to LifeShare, you can help to save lives by raising organ and tissue donation awareness. You may contribute in several ways. In lieu of flowers, LifeShare may be designated as the organization to receive memorials for funerals. Contributions may also be made in the name of a transplant recipient, donor or other loved one. Each person who makes a contribution to LifeShare receives a thank you letter. A separate letter is sent to the family or person in whose honor the donation was made. Mission Health Systems Creates New Video for Mountain-Area Residents Mission Hospital patients have a new choice of TV programs from which to select. Along with network television, video games, and other programming, an inspirational video on organ and tissue donation has been added to the hospital s on-demand education channel. The video tells the story of three Mountain area residents that have been touched by donation. They are Zeb, a teenage heart transplant recipient; Suzette, a cornea recipient and Nancy, a kidney-pancreas recipient. Each of their stories is compelling but it is the two Mission trauma surgeons, Drs. Abenamar Arrillago and Errington Thompson who are able to eloquently dispel the leading myth that prevents people from signing up as donors that is the fear of being declared dead prematurely. We are pleased that one of our recent donor families agreed to participate in the video. Demetrius and Nicole McGee were the parents of 13-year old Niyale, who suffered a tragic accident while roller-skating. For them, donation was the only thing that was positive in their daughter s death knowing that an 11-year old girl is alive and well because of their daughter. The Mission video was made possible by a generous grant from the North Carolina License to Give Trust Fund Commission. We would like to give special thanks to Sara Wilcox, a Mission Hospital Chaplain, who spearheaded the project. We highly encourage anyone visiting Mission Hospital to be sure and look for the film. Not planning a trip to the Mountains? Check it out at Please mail your check, payable to LifeShare, to the address on the back of the newsletter. 7 LifeShare gratefully acknowledges the commitment of all nurses and other medical personnel who help to further the ideals of organ and tissue donation. It is through their efforts and the generosity of donor family members that donation occurs. When comparing statistics, please note that not all hospitals have the same donor potential.
