Frances Payne Bolton ( ) Frances Payne Bolton was the first woman to be elected from Ohio to Congress and the first congresswoman to represent the United States in the United Nations General Assembly. In 1943, she created a widespread awareness of the critical importance of the field of nursing by sponsoring the Bolton Act, which introduced the U.S. Nurse Cadet Corps. Bolton believed that the role of the nurse was not only caring for the sick but also teaching health and that nurses bring light, easement, intelligence, and understanding where there [is] darkness. These principles continue to shape the philosophy of the Frances Payne Bolton School of Nursing and enable it to maintain its status as one of the nation s premier nursing schools. 3 FRANCES PAYNE BOLTON SCHOOL OF NURSING Preparing nurse leaders who change lives Why just work in health care when you Although there are many can shape its future? The Frances Payne undergraduate nursing programs in the Bolton School of Nursing (FPB) at Case U.S., ours stands out as a leader thanks Western Reserve University consistently to our rich history and our world-renowned ranks as one of the top nursing schools reputation as an innovator in nursing in the country. This means that our education, research, and service. students not only land great jobs when they graduate, they also become part of a global network of leading practitioners, researchers, and educators. Some FPB Highlights BSN students at FPB receive nearly double the national average of clinical hours (1600+) FPB is #4 among all private universities in the country (U.S. News & World Report s 2004 edition of America s Best Graduate Schools) and is the #1 nursing school in Ohio FPB is ranked #15 for graduate and professional programs nationally by U.S. News & World Report (2007 edition) Unlike other universities with pre-nursing tracks, FPB offers direct admission to the nursing program. Also, FPB students take nursing classes in their first year on campus FPB students are the only nursing students in the country who start their clinical placements the third week of the first semester of their freshman year FPB is home to the country s first: practice doctorate in nursing acute care nurse practitioner program flight nursing program FPB hosts one of 10 World Health Organization Collaborating Centers that focus on nursing in the U.S. and one of 38 in the world Our students routinely pass above the national average on the NCLEX, the RN licensure exam BSN students have several opportunities to study abroad to gain perspectives on global health All first-year BSN students at FPB receive a partial-tuition scholarship and are evaluated for additional university scholarships 2

Clinical Hours Real-world experiences for well-prepared nurse leaders Nurses work in settings where anything can happen. Whether it s providing emergency care to a car crash victim or teaching children about good nutrition, a nurse s work requires both careful skill and the ability to improvise. That s why hands-on learning is an integral part of our BSN program, giving our students the advantage of experience. After all, there s no better way to learn than by doing. Clinical learning takes place in more than 200 Cleveland community agencies and organizations each semester, including some internationally-renowned institutions. UNIVERSITY HOSPITALS CASE MEDICAL CENTER require clinical experience; however, FPB s clinical programs are different from the rest. CLEVELAND CLINIC Clinicals begin the first semester. All undergraduate nursing programs Consequently, our students receive close to double the national average of clinical hours just over 1600, many more than their peers at other nursing schools receive. In addition, employers representing the nation s top healthcare institutions take notice of our very experienced graduates and offer them highly competitive salaries. 3 Students have access to top healthcare systems. Among the nation s leading academic hospitals, forming the largest biomedical research center in Ohio and one of the top 20 in the country The second largest medical group practice in the world and the largest hospital in Ohio; one of 10 U.S. hospitals designated The Best of the Best by U.S. News & World Report LOUIS STOKES VA MEDICAL CENTER Recognized for more programs of clinical excellence than any other VA medical center in the United States METROHEALTH MEDICAL CENTER A regional referral hospital that is one of only 19 Level 1 trauma centers with a burn unit and a rehabilitation facility specializing in spinal cord injuries

Service Learning Experience is the best teacher Hands-on service learning throughout the curriculum From their first year on campus, BSN students are involved in service learning activities that expose them to a wide variety of community health issues and expand their worldviews. Students provide healthcare services to children and families, and, in turn, receive enriching learning opportunities that cannot be attained in the classroom. FPB weaves hands-on service learning throughout its curriculum, which provides our students with additional experience, leadership development, and a number of contacts in health care well before graduating. First-year students experience this through their community clinical involvement each semester. Recently, a group of eight junior BSN students delivered a program on brain health as part of a special initiative of the Cleveland Public Library. The students researched brain structure and physiology, the effects of alcohol on the brain, and nutrition and activities for good brain health. Team members developed their findings into a presentation which they conducted for more than 100 adults and children. Senior Capstone Community Project FPB s service learning culminates in the senior year with the 10-week Senior Capstone project, where students have an intensive experience in communitybased health care with vulnerable populations such as Native Americans, migrant workers, the Australian aboriginal community, and the urban poor. The experience provides senior BSN students with the opportunity to analyze and apply concepts in health and health care, health policy and finance, culture, epidemiology, interventions, ethics, and more. A group of seniors recently held an immunization fair in conjunction with a local health department, which resulted in three times as many people receiving flu shots than in the previous year. Another group ran a sports camp to empower and educate economically disadvantaged youth on various health issues. Although FPB students have their pick of service projects at Cleveland-area schools and local nonprofit agencies, they also have the opportunity to fulfill the Senior Capstone requirement across the country and around the world. One group of BSN students conducted rotations in home health nursing, school nursing, and family planning on the Gila River Reservation in Arizona. Another worked on smoking cessation in Hong Kong, while others have tackled public health issues in certain Appalachian communities. In the past few years, students have served in a variety of healthcare settings that span the globe, from the rugged Australian outback to the mountainous reaches of Santiago, Chile to the 900-year-old streets of Copenhagen, Denmark to the sun-kissed beaches of the Virgin Islands. 4

Our BSN students get involved in research through their coursework or by assisting faculty with their own scientific endeavors. Research Advancing human health through discovery and exploration All nurses change lives. Some do it from the bedside of a patient; others do it from a workstation in a research center. FPB furthers Case Western Reserve University s long-held legacy as a leading research institution. Unlike their peers at other schools of nursing, our undergraduates have plenty of opportunities to roll up their sleeves and help to discover the next big thing in health care. Some recent projects include: CHILDREN S HEART HEALTH BSN students are participating in an American Heart Association research study on high blood pressure and obesity in children. They collect data from elementary school students of the Cleveland Metropolitan School District and also conduct programs to promote exercise. This work is evolving into a project related to hypertension in school-age children. ASTHMA EDUCATION Another group is taking part in the American Lung Association s Open Airways project to improve the quality of life of asthmatic children. The BSN student research team developed instructional materials for parents and caregivers of these children. 5 BSN STUDENT Lauren Flaherty, Senior Tyngsboro, Massachusetts Lauren developed an interest in pediatric critical care while working alongside her advisor and mentor, Dr. Elizabeth Damato. It really demands quick, on-your-feet thinking, and it worked as a kind of bridge to my research study, where I had the opportunity to talk to parents and teach them about proper child care, she says. Her findings received two major prizes at the 2009 Midwest Nursing Research Society Conference. View more student and faculty profiles at fpb.case.edu.

Faculty mentors Big ideas, small class sizes. At FPB you will be more than just a face in the crowd. Our faculty will know you by name and will be resources to you both in and out of the classroom and after you graduate. BSN students tap into our faculty s vast network of contacts, which includes industry leaders and well-known scholars much like our faculty themselves. Seventeen of our faculty members are fellows of the American Academy of Nursing. FPB is also home to 13 endowed professorships the most prestigious faculty positions awarded to individuals recognized for making significant contributions to nursing education. Student life Rich social traditions, lots of choices. BSN students automatically become members of the Undergraduate Student Nursing Association, which plans programs and activities at the local and national levels. In addition, FPB students engage in all of Case s varsity sports, including football, soccer, and track and field, as well as other pursuits such as theater, Greek life, and student government. Global healing BSN students enjoy plenty of opportunities to study abroad during Spring Break, for a semester, or for an academic year. In fact, FPB is the only nursing school in the country where students can study abroad during their senior year for clinical nursing credit. FPB is proud to be home to a World Health Organization Collaborating Center one of only 10 in the United States and one of 38 in the world focusing on nursing. We regularly host international scholars who wish to study with our faculty and visit premier clinical sites in the United States. In addition, there is a strong international student presence at FPB representing nearly two dozen countries, creating a rich, intercultural learning environment. These international students help to bolster our large number of alumni from around the globe, all of whom proudly carry FPB s name for the whole world to see. FPB emphasizes quality health care without borders and maintains a strong legacy and many current activities in international health. 6

After the BSN Degree Work in the field or advance your education With the nation facing a shortage of both nurses and nursing faculty, job prospects for BSN graduates are plentiful. As a leading nursing school, FPB has a rock-solid reputation among employers for preparing experienced and skilled nurses, which has provided our alumni with rewarding careers in healthcare settings from community hospitals to government agencies, from their hometowns to far-off corners of the globe. Given our emphasis on both hands-on learning and research, it s not uncommon for BSN grads to pursue doctoral degrees in nursing, either to be chief nursing officers at today s state-of-the-art hospitals or to teach the nurses of tomorrow. Recent BSN graduates have secured jobs at leading institutions, including: Mayo Clinic Duke University Medical Center Tampa General Hospital Johns Hopkins Hospital Rush-Presbyterian-St. Luke s Medical Center University of Michigan Health System The Ohio State University Medical Center Cleveland Clinic University Hospitals Case Medical Center MetroHealth Medical Center FPB alumni have served as presidents of all major nursing organizations. Learn more about our alumni at fpb.case.edu. NURSING: A Recession-proof Career According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment of registered nurses is expected to grow 23 percent by 2016, much faster than the average for all occupations, with physicians offices and home healthcare services having the highest projected growth rates. This means that about 587,000 new nursing jobs are expected, plus an additional hundreds of thousands of positions due to retiring older nurses. The median annual salary of registered nurses is $62,450, according to a May 2008 U.S. Department of Labor report. Further study at FPB MASTER S PROGRAM FPB offers a range of Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) majors and subspecialties, including several nurse practitioner programs from pediatrics to gerontology, flight nursing, nursing informatics, public health nursing, psychiatric-mental health, and others. Our BSN students have the option to apply for early admission to our MSN program. TWO DOCTORAL DEGREES 7 FPB offers both a Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) and a Doctor of Philosophy in Nursing (PhD). The DNP prepares students for executive leadership roles as advanced practice nurses, administrators of health, and administrators of healthcare systems and clinical research settings. The PhD is designed for students with an interest in careers as university-level faculty and research scientists. A fasttrack BSN to PhD option is available.

Technology and Learning Resources Learn at the speed of ideas Studying at FPB will prepare you well for the ever-changing world of health care, an increasingly technologydependent field. A special feature of the school is the Learning Resource Center, which offers a number of tools and facilities, including simulated clinical settings. Clinical Teaching Center FPB students learn, practice, and demonstrate competency in physical assessment skills via use of a simulated ambulatory clinic, a medical-surgical unit, an intensive care unit, a newborn nursery, and a neonatal intensive care unit. Multimedia Simulation Center Hands-on procedures are a natural in this facility that features a range of human patient simulators and high-tech task trainers. These simulators provide students with the opportunity to practice skills on vulnerable patients without putting them at risk. This experience increases students confidence and ability to provide safe clinical care to hospitalized patients. Cyber Café Relax in a casual setting (with a microwave, television, couches, and a refrigerator) or study at a network-enabled workstation. There is also internet and wireless connectivity for laptops. Center for Bioinformatics and Health Promotion Part electronically-enhanced classroom, part special events center, part wireless computer lab, this 24-seat multimedia center is optimized for today s learning environment. BSN STUDENT Angel Ramos, Junior Lorain, Ohio Angel chose FPB because of its commitment to preparing students through experiential learning. Being able to work in the hospital your first year really helps you get a great perspective for the field, he says. Each time I go to the hospital is unique because there is always something new to learn and a new situation to face. View more student and faculty profiles at fpb.case.edu. Meet the Sim-Family Sim-Man is a digitally-enhanced mannequin that breathes, has a pulse, and maintains a heart rhythm and blood pressure. Sim-Man can simulate almost any patient emergency and is programmable to provide the most life-like responses with immediate feedback for student learning. Sim-Baby and Sim-Child provide the same capabilities to simulate a sick infant and pre-adolescent, respectively. Two Cath-Sim units are used to teach students how to insert intravenous catheters through the skin and into a vein. The software program instantly assesses the student s performance to enhance development of the nursing skills needed in real-life situations. 8

Four years at FPB create a lifetime of opportunity. Faculty who do more than just lecture. Courses that offer more than just credit hours. An FPB education is a rich, academic experience that combines a foundation in theory and practice with hands-on learning and leadership development in real-world healthcare settings. Upon successful completion of the BSN program, graduates will be eligible to sit for the NCLEX examination for licensure as Registered Nurses (RNs). The BSN program includes nursing, science, and liberal arts courses. A minimum of 124 credit hours, with at least 50 credits from upper division courses, are required for awarding of the BSN degree.
