2 Adopted: 6/25/07 SUBJECT AREA ENGLISH COURSE DESCRIPTION: The course provides students an introduction to public speaking, terminology, basic skills and techniques for making oral presentations and speeches. Students will develop the skills of articulation, relevant argument, poise and presence through repeated experience in practice, performance, and measured selfconfidence. Public Speaking is an activity-based course, focusing on the development of speech skills through frequent opportunities to speak in a public forum, on a wide variety of personal and public issues. COURSE GOALS: Upon completion of the course, students will: 1. Develop proper techniques for presenting speeches. 2. Use speech training to facilitate communication. 3. Use active listening to improve understanding and communication between the speaker and the audience. 4. Use critical listening to enhance the listener s ability to evaluate messages. 5. Use preparation of speeches to research, analyze, organize, and utilize effective language. 6. Provide an audience with beneficial knowledge, clear understanding of ideas, and interest in the subject matter.
