1 Central New York/Oswego County Teacher Center Spring 2016 Workshops octc.org Workshop Attendance Policy: If you are unable to attend a workshop for which you are registered, you need to give the Teacher Center a minimum of 48 hours notice. We realize that emergencies arise at the last minute. If that happens, please send us an letting us know. Many of our workshops are full to capacity with wait lists of people wanting to attend. With advance notice of a cancellation, we are able to offer that seat to someone else. Please monitor your local TV/radio stations during inclement weather. 2 Differentiated Instruction: Follow up This workshop is designed as a follow up to the original Differentiated Instruction class. It will incorporate real life differentiated instruction practices and will aim to help teachers improve DI strategies. Participants should bring questions and real life challenges to be discussed, talked about, and worked through as a group. Instructor will incorporate additional strategies to further add to your DI toolbox. Participants will learn to use a step by step process to improve student learning as well as turn the standards into teachable learning targets. Each participant will need to bring a copy of the NYS ELA/Literacy Standards. 4 Learning Styles & Modalities This training will familiarize participants with various ways in which students learn. It will also enable educators in assisting students in maximizing their learning potential. This is a great prerequisite for a Differentiated Instruction course. Protocols consist of agreed upon guidelines and work to build trust among team members by doing substantive work. Protocols offer the opportunity for educators to engage in an insightful conversation about teaching and learning. 5 Book Talk: Why before How Singapore Math Computations Strategies (3 6) Your students know that 2x3=6, but do they know why? Do they have the mathematical reasoning skills to see them through more than just the next test? They will once they discover the powerful computation strategies described in Jana Hazekamp s book, adapted from the acclaimed Singapore approach for learning mathematics. The strategies focus on the why of learning in mathematics. This book talk will allow teachers to explore strategies together and develop an implementation plan for their classrooms. Strategies build concept of place value, encourage real understanding of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division, and can be used for whole class instruction or small intervention groups. Participants will evaluate their use and report successes and challenges that they face in their instruction. They will design an Augmented Reality experience of their own using a word from their word wall, a book cover, or something that they create and share with others. 6 NYSUT: Instructional Supports for English Language Learners English language learners (ELLs) are the fastest growing student population in schools, and they must be considered when New York State ELA/Literacy and Math Standards are being implemented. Geared for general education teachers, this seminar will help participants design effective content area instruction while they explore research based strategies, instructional guidelines and resources for helping ELLs succeed. Presenter: Areli Schermerhorn Date: May 17, Teacher Center (NYSUT) Suite 203 Audience: All educators NYSUT: Reading Comprehension: Understanding Text Structures (5 12) Today s high school students tend to be very good at identifying elements of the narrative and comprehending the story. However, when other text structures such as expository or cause and effect are utilized, many students struggle with comprehension. This seminar analyzes six expository text structures and offers keys to developing the reader confidence students need to be successful in all subject areas. Presenter: Cindy Pauldine Date: May 18, Teacher Center (NYSUT) Suite 203 Audience: Grades 5 12 educators NYSUT: Guiding Struggling Readers (4 12) Becoming a competent reader and writer is essential for student success. The Balanced Literacy Approach begins with reading aloud and continues until students have developed the strategies to become independent readers. Along the way, those students who are struggling with reading must be guided. This seminar will identify the behaviors of struggling readers and suggest strategies needed to assist students in comprehending narrative and expository text. How these strategies can improve student literacy will be discussed. Finally, how these strategies can be implemented into classroom instruction to help struggling readers gain control and begin to self monitor their reading will be explained. This workshop is a super high energy, entertaining presentation with a heavy emphasis on increasing student engagement and using creative, innovative strategies. In addition, it has as inspirational message about how and why to become more passionate about the profession and how to create life changing experiences for students. 8 NYSUT: Understanding Students with Autism Spectrum Disorder Ending the achievement gap between students with disabilities and their non disabled peers requires addressing the essential factors that can influence their success. This three hour training provides up to date information on the clinical and associated features of Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASDs), including Asperger s Disorder. Attention will be given to how these disorders manifest themselves and present unique instructional and learning challenges within education settings.
