Working together in the West Midlands Welcome to this Directory of Disabled People s User Led Organisations (DPULOs) in the West Midlands region. DPULOs are disability organisations which are managed, governed or otherwise controlled by a majority of disabled people. This means that they usually have a board of directors or trustees who are disabled people themselves. The idea of DPULOs has its history in the disability rights movement of the 1980s and 1990s when a lot of the first DPULOs were set up. Disabled people decided it would be a good thing to take control of the organisations and services which in the past were provided to them by other people. It makes perfect sense: Nothing about us, without us! In 2014 the Office of Disability Issues, which is a government department funded a series of events around England to bring together regional DPULOs. In the West Midlands we held an event at St Andrews football ground in Birmingham. The event was attended by 27 different DPULOs from all around the West Midlands region. The event had a number of aims. One was to develop a shared understanding about the value of DPULOs in the delivery of public services. Another aim was to actually build regional partnerships, by developing and facilitating networking opportunities and encouraging DPULOs to work together across boundaries in our region. The Fulfilling Potential Forum Another main reason for the Office of Disability Issues wanting to facilitate regional networks of DPULOs was to invite each region to attend a quarterly forum in London called the Fulfilling Potential Forum. 2

The purpose of this forum was for disability organisations from all over the UK to meet with government ministers and with senior officers from different departments to discuss planned policies affecting the lives of disabled people. A representative from the West Midlands went to each of the four forums between April 2014 and February As well as DPULO representatives from the nine English regions, there were many national disability charities and pressure groups present, as well as DPULOs from Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. The first meeting was taken up with talking about the Forum itself, setting ground rules and agreeing protocol and topics for future meetings. At the next two meetings a lot of different topics were discussed in workshops and presentations given by ministers and officers. At the most recent Forum meeting in February 2015 there was mainly discussion about the purpose of the Forum and a review of whether it has been successful. Disability Resource Centre contributed to the feedback on behalf of the West Midlands both at the Forum and during a one-to-one telephone interview with ODI and Forum representatives. Details of our feedback will be sent to West Midlands DPULOs. The future of the Fulfilling Potential Forum will be decided by the new government following the General Election of May Watch this space 3

About this Directory This Directory has been put together by Disability Resource Centre in order to share useful contact details and other information about the DPULOs in the West Midlands region. The idea is that DPULOs can make contact with each other and share networking ideas and opportunities. The information has been gathered through a number of sources such as an online survey, through and also by looking at organisation websites. The main format of the Directory is an electronic version online which can be added to and developed on an ongoing basis. Some of the entries may still be incomplete, so if you find we have got your contact details wrong or you want to update something or tell us about new areas of work or expertise which you have become interested in, please us at: pmillington@disability.co.uk One of the most important things we should share is information about partnership working. You can do this by updating the section in your entry, or, we have also created a Facebook Group called: DPULO Forum West Midlands We would encourage all DPULOs in the West Midlands to join the Facebook group in order to share and discuss new opportunities for networking. We have also created a blog for sharing news and information affecting DPULOs at: 4

Community Navigator Services CIL Community Navigator Services CIC (CNS) are a team of three people who all identify as disabled people. Our aim (as our name suggests) is twofold: firstly, to help people help themselves, developing independence, competence, and confidence as they navigate today's challenges and difficulties; secondly, we help organisations navigate their path to the people they want to reach, advising them on how to change to become more accessible and approachable, and putting them in touch with individuals and networks. We are experienced in advocacy, training, coaching, mentoring, and communication. We believe in and practice what we call the four Cs : connect (connecting people, not least through co-production) challenge create communicate. We are passionate about social justice. We did not invent Social justice. We simply decided it matters. And we are resolved to make it better. We believe working towards social justice is a change management process. Our work with organisations helps them add value by managing the change to a more equal and vibrant culture. We are a DPULO based in Solihull and we have concentrated our efforts around West Midlands for practical reasons we have made contact with both Solihull MBC and Birmingham CC which we envisage bringing in working partnership opportunities. We have done some training with both Dudley CIL and Ideals 4 All, which we see leading to further projects. We are also expanding into East Midlands, for example working with Leicester CIL. As well as these projects we have completed a pilot project with Scope on I- statements based in and around their homes in Worcester. As a newly formed CIC, we are open to partnership work nationwide and feel as an organisation made up of disabled people living and working in modern society, we have a unique perspective which gives us an edge on other organisations. Training 20

We work with organisations who want to promote social justice but who do not have the resources to provide their own specialist training. Our training packages are challenging but non-threatening, and are highly interactive. People on our course not only learn not only the about the subject but also how to implement it so that the organisation sees a direct link between classroom and workplace activity. Peer Advocacy Communality Navigator Services - works with individuals and groups to empower them. We aim to help people both achieve their immediate aims, and also build the confidence, skills, and capacity to overcome similar and different challenges in the futures. We encourage them to then use these techniques and skills to support others to overcome their own barriers. By doing so they themselves become community navigators" strengthening their own communities and society as a whole. Our fundamental approach is to nudge people away from the crisis model of advocacy, which we believe breeds dependence, towards a Peer Advocacy which develops self assurance and teaches everyone the benefits of working together and in doing so builds community resolve, and enables people to support each other rather than relying on professionals (like us). Research and Consultancy We work with organisations who want to promote social justice, but who face complex situations that require careful and informed planning. Our expert research and consultancy is unusual in that it encompasses the fields of equality, change management, and communication. We can provide people with the information and understanding that enables them to take effective action. Communications We help organisations who need to express their ideas clearly, explain complicated ideas and processes, encourage change, and motivate teams. We use our experience in corporate communications and our skills in both written and visual communication so that people find new ways of communicating that are simple and striking, different and effective. Public Speaking We work with organisations who want to promote social justice, but need an event to introduce change. We provide thought-leadership and keynote speeches that motivate and inform, challenge and entertain. Our public speaking gives people the direction and impetus they need to start meaningful longterm change. Current Projects 21

We are currently doing consultancy and co-production work for Heart of England Foundation Trust, and Birmingham and Solihull councils. We have recently been engaged on a co-production project with Scope. As a result of reflecting on these experiences, we have been developing a model / process for co-production. We are working with Leicester CIL on developing training and events. We are also delivering a keynote presentation for the annual conference of the Birmingham Care and Development Agency Partnership working CNS uses a solution-focused approach, working with people on an individual and organisational basis. What we can bring to a partnership Co-production we practise what we preach! we can inspire great ideas and build relationships an extensive network of individuals, thinkers, doers, policy makers, and fund holders experience in building capacity thought leadership research and consultancy skills communication, advocacy, mentoring skills we are very clear on what we want to achieve and the principles that we work to a meeting place admin support we have both vision and drive Plus we have a sense of humour!
