Multimedia Projects ICT Training June 2002 Job Aid Prepared by Oksana Maibroda Contents Developing multimedia projects 1 Developing multimedia projects The purpose of this workshop is to discuss the essential elements of a multimedia project and how to decide which technology tools are appropriate for such projects. Multimedia is not a new concept. Today, technology has expanded to encompass all facets of our daily lives at work, at home, at school and on the move and it is reaching everwidening segments of society. The Internet, , mobile phones, etc., are becoming standard features for today s information society to communicate, gain access to new services and to learn new skills. Given the extensive development of telecommunications, growing Internet use, and the globalization of information communication technologies (ICT), technological development should continue its upward trend over the next few years. It is with this in mind that educators today are looking at ways of enhancing their daily classroom activities through the use of multimedia projects. Characteristics 2 of multimedia projects Evaluating 3 multimedia projects Technological 4 tool descriptions Activity 7 Trainer Notes 8 CSLP Multimedia Projects Page 1

Definition of multimedia The integration of media objects such as text, graphics, video, animation and sound to represent and convey information. Although multimedia projects can be time consuming and costly, the benefits far outweigh the costs. Multimedia projects provide your students the opportunity to be creative while striving to illustrate and convey newly acquired information. Some key aspects to consider before implementing a multimedia project are: Access Cost Teaching Interactions and user friendliness Organization and infrastructure Novelty Speed Technological tools are vehicles for integrating all the pieces, such as text, graphics, animation, sound, and video. Whatever tool is selected sets limitations and determines the level of effort on the part of your students. Characteristics of project with multimedia Anchored in core curriculum; multidisciplinary Involves students in sustained effort over time Involves student decision-making Collaborative Has a clear real-world connection Systematic assessment: both along the way and end product Takes advantage of multimedia as a communication tool CSLP Multimedia Projects Page 2

Evaluating multimedia projects When choosing a technology tool for a multimedia project, take into account how you will evaluate the content, collaboration and multimedia used in your student s projects. Content Establishing clear criteria or goals for a project helps with the evaluation process. Content may exhibit the following: Significant topic Ideas and concepts Knowledge and opinions Clear goal Multiple sources Usefulness Insightfulness Critical thinking Collaboration Multimedia projects often require your students to work collaboratively in groups due to limited technology resources and time constraints. Teachers may look for the following abilities when evaluating student performance: Ability to work together jointly Affective team members Capitalize on each other s strengths Exhibit decision-making Accomplish results that would not be possible if working alone Multimedia When evaluating the multimedia tools used in the project, attention should be drawn to the following aspects: Integration of media objects, such as text, graphics, video, sound, and animation Creative and effective use Few technical problems Exploitation of participants strengths All elements contribute to the chosen format CSLP Multimedia Projects Page 3

Technological tool descriptions Digital Camera There are many ways that a digital camera can be used in your class projects. Digital cameras can be used to record field trips and other school events, document science projects or illustrate writing projects. Digital images can be incorporated into a variety of class activities such as Web pages, presentations, and newsletters. Draw on your students imagination and creativity to come up with unique and fun ways to apply images to t-shirts, shrink paper, magnet paper, or window decal paper. For a project example, go to: Scanner Scanners allow the user to convert existing pictures into a digital format which then can be modified or edited to fit the desired goals of a project. Scanners can also be very useful by allowing the creative student to draw or paint his/her own artwork on paper then scan the picture into a report. The uses are limited only by your students imagination. For an example of a scanner project, go to: MS PowerPoint PowerPoint (PPT) allows students to make attractive presentations. The exercise of planning a PPT can encourage students to sequence, research, summarize facts, collaborate and be creative. Projects may include storybooks, science report or Social Studies topics. PPT requires some training, so before implementing your class project, spend some time teaching your students about the software. For a PPT example, go to: ocean/ocean%20journey%20show/sld001.htm CSLP Multimedia Projects Page 4

MS Paint Microsoft Paint is an inexpensive painting program that can be used to teach students the basics of a painting software. Using any painting program involves learning how to use the menu bar and the tool bar. MS Paint also includes a color palette that allows the user to choose both foreground and background colors. For an MS Paint example, go to: MS Excel MS Excel is spreadsheet software that can be used in a variety of ways by teachers and students. Besides creating class lists, Excel can be used to record data about student marks, assignments and demographic information. It can also be used to plan and mange projects that involve many tasks and deadlines. Students can learn to use Excel to record results from their science experiments and create attractive graphs and charts for presentations. They can also use Excel to solve mathematic problems. Excel requires some training but once students learn the basics, they undoubtedly find new and creative ways to use this software in their projects. For an example of Excel, go to: MS Word Word-processing software such as MS Word can be used in many ways by students and teachers, such as creating newsletters, illustrated stories and other creative writing projects. The software allows students to design their work as they learn to apply the different features and functions when formatting their assignments. Inserting images, animated graphics, movies, and hyperlinks can bring your projects to life. For an example of a newsletter using MS Word, go to: antarcticnewsletters/discovery2/discovery2/index.html CSLP Multimedia Projects Page 5

Dreamweaver Dreamweaver is software used to create HTML pages that can later be uploaded to a Web site. This software requires training, so it is recommended to approach this tool in progressive stages as your students build their Web pages. Developing storyboards before using this software is essential. This activity will help ensure student success when developing their Web pages. For an example of a Web site created with Dreamweaver, go to: Nicenet Nicenet is conferencing software that resides on the Internet. It is free and currently in use by many educators. It can be used to create a class conference to communicate with your students or other teachers in your school. It is a great tool to enhance student writing skills and exchange ideas. For more information, go to: WebQuest A WebQuest is an inquiry-oriented activity in which most or all of the information used by learners is drawn from the Web. WebQuests are designed to use learners' time well, to focus on using information rather than looking for it, and to support learners' thinking at the levels of analysis, synthesis and evaluation. For an example of a WebQuest, go to: CSLP Multimedia Projects Page 6

Multimedia Projects Activity Activity You now possess the basic knowledge and information required to create a multimedia project. Using the information from this workshop and job aid, choose one or more technological tools to design a project for your class. Choose something with which you are comfortable and start with something simple if this is the first time you are using a multimedia approach. You may work individually or in small groups. Towards the end of the session, you will share your design with the rest of the participants.

Multimedia Projects Trainer Notes What you must do: Review and select examples of multimedia projects Provide some sites that teachers can use as a resource Things you will need for your workshop: Handouts for all participants Projector and computer for all participants or pen and paper Multimedia URL addresses Here are a few examples of multimedia projects found online. To find more examples, you may use key words such as multimedia projects or project based learning. Solar System Project Pixies and Paintings Tech Tool Resource Kits Scoring rubric
