2 Excellence in Aboriginal Business Leadership Awards Excellence in Aboriginal Business Leadership Awards Michael Benarroch, Dean of the Asper School of Business congratulates Chief Cindy Spence of Chief Peguis Investment Corporation, recipient of the 2015 EABLA Award. Established in 2004, EABLA is ABEP s premiere fundraising event. Funds raised from EABLA supports tutoring services, networking events, and scholarship funding for our students. Manitoba artist Irvin Head has been our go-to sculptor to create our awards. Photos from this year s EABLA on the following page. Like many entrepreneurs, we invested our resources in this business on a leap of faith. We learned that simple kindness, treating the customer as our best critic, and engaging the goodwill of our community have helped out business grow. noted the café s co-owner, Bob Chartrand. I.H. Asper School of Business Dean, Michael Benarroch, expressed a similar sentiment, when he presented the Excellence in Aboriginal Business Leadership Award to Chief Peguis Investment Corporation. CPIC was created by the community in 2012 and was developed with input from approximately 600 members, including 200 youth. The company s mandate is to provide a rate of return to the membership of Peguis First Nation through investments in five key areas: retail, wholesale, residential, commercial, and philanthropic activity. Whelan Sutherland, an ABEP alum and CPIC s Chief Executive Officer, could not attend EABLA this year but was able to extend thanks through video. Accepting the award was Chief Cindy Spence of Chief Peguis First Nation who noted that The investment corporation has brought great prosperity to our community and will continue to do so under the great leadership of our young people, like Whelan. When you sign up, choose a time slot to meet with your favourite employer or do a round and meet everyone the choice is yours! It can help you start your career off in the right direction by making sure that you are able to compete for the best jobs. Invest in yourself and spend the time to make sure your resume is the best that it can be. Your resume should be a well-organized, easy to read summary of your skills, abilities and accomplishments. Recruiters are always impressed to hear about your volunteer work as well any travel experiences you ve had! Don t be afraid to mention these things you ll be sure to stand out! Don t forget to attend some mock interviews as well so that you re prepared to answer questions the right way. You ll be prepared for the real thing and may even make an impression with the recruitment team at an employer you ve been scoping out.
