I look forward to helping you prepare and strengthen your Spanish skills this year. Below is an outline to help you have a successful and rewarding year! Course Description: Foreign language is an important part of the curriculum at Battlefield High School. As communication is the central goal, students will continue to develop their: ability to speak the language clearly, correctly and appropriately in a given situation, ability to write the language, interpretation of the language as it is spoken in formal and informal context, comprehension of reading materials relating to a variety of subjects, awareness and understanding of the different Spanish speaking countries. Syllabus: Review of Spanish 1 New Topics Culture Additional Information 1. Adjective Agreement 2. Present Tense of Regular and Irregular verbs 3. Ser vs. Estar 4. Verbs with Indirect Object Pronouns (gustar, etc.) 5. Basic Vocabulary (school, pastimes, family, etc.) 1. Vocab (towns/cities, house/chores, professions, health, personal attributes, childhood hobbies) 2. Present Progressive Tense 3. Reflexive Verbs 4. Saber vs. Conocer 5. Direct and Indirect Object Pronouns 6. Commands (imperative tense) 7. Preterite Tense 8. Imperfect Tense 9. Preterite vs. Imperfect 1. Mexico and the Aztecs and the Mayans 2. Peru and the Incas 1. Grammar: Grammar will be taught and practiced 2. Vocab: Each chapter in the textbook contains two vocabulary lists 3. Readings: Short stories are read throughout each chapter. 4. Writing: A minimum of one composition will be written per unit. 5. Listening: Listening activities are practiced every week 6. Speaking: Oral presentations as well as conversation assignments (individual and group) will occur frequently throughout the year. Materials Needed: 1. Binder OR Composition book 5. Colored Pencils/Crayons/Markers 2. Paper 6. Spanish to English Dictionary (recommended) 3. Folder DONATIONS PLEASE 4. Pen/Pencil/Highlighter/Glue Sticks 1 box of tissues 1 pack of crayons or colored pencils 1 pack of glue sticks
2 Evaluation/Grading: Grades are totaled by percentages. Participation 5% Students are expected to participate in class, speak in Spanish and follow classroom expectations. Homework 5% Students are expected to complete homework assignments. Homework is graded for completion and an answer key will be provided for students to check their homework in class. Classwork Quizzes Listening Reading Speaking Writing 10% Classwork is collected and graded to ENCOURAGE students to practice and to ask questions if they do not understand what they are doing. Students will have opportunities to work alone, with a partner, or in groups. Students are expected to turn in their work at the end of the class even if they did not complete their work. Students should ensure they use their time wisely. 16% Quizzes are used to assess vocabulary and grammar concepts. All quizzes are announced. 16% Students are assessed on their ability to understand material in audio form, which includes textbook listening activities and responses to videos and media clips. A practice assessment is given prior to the actual assessment. The practice assessment is an indicator of whether the student needs more practice. Students are notified of listening assessment dates in advance. 16% Students will read textbook excerpts, magazine articles, dialogues, advertisements and a variety of short-level appropriate authentic sources. They will be graded on corresponding activities such as comprehension questions and annotations. 16% In order to promote and support the goal of % target language usage in class, students will complete a variety of speaking activities such as paired speaking, presentations, question/answer sessions with the teacher and skits. Some speaking assessments are prepared ahead of time and presented at a later date while other assessments are spontaneous conversations that use the current grammar and vocabulary being studied in class. Students are notified of speaking assessment dates in advance. 16% Students will complete a number of assignments in this area including short responses, journal entries, creative writing assignments and unit end compositions. Large writing assignments are graded using the PALs Level 2 Rubric. Absences: It is the student s responsibility to check the absent folder located in the classroom. Students must make up any quizzes/assessment within two weeks of the excused absence before or after school. If the student fails to make up the assessment within the two-week timeframe, the grade will be a zero. Excused absence assignments must be turned in the day the student returns to school. If a student skips class, they will receive a zero on all assignments due and given that day. In addition, students will receive an administrative referral and parent contact will be made. Students with an unexcused absence will receive a zero on any assignments due or handed in that day.
3 Classroom Expectations: Students are expected to: Be respectful of the comments and opinions of others and to be respectful of other students efforts in speaking Spanish. This is very important so students feel comfortable using the language in class. Arrive to class on time with all required materials, be seated, remain in their seats, and begin the warm-up activity. Raise their hand to speak. Do their best and participate in class each day. Students will NOT: Be excused to leave the first or last ten minutes of class. **Eat, or drink (only water in a clear container allowed). This is very important because there are SEVERAL students with severe peanut allergies. Take out, look at, or use any electronics (unless given permission by the teacher.) Work on assignments from other classes. Pack up or leave the classroom until dismissed by Señora. Bell. At Home Study Tips: Use flash cards for vocabulary and verb conjugations and study them a little bit every night. Write out the verb conjugations or vocabulary words you are having trouble with 5x each. Say your vocab words/verbs conjugations out loud and record yourself. Play it back to hear where you can improve and where you did well. Study with a partner. Stay after school with Señora Bell Extra Help After School: *Helpful Websites: Students are encouraged to seek help whether it s with a tutor or me. Don t wait to seek help a few days before report cards go out! Tuesdays are my designated days for after school assistance from 2:00 3:00. If this time does not work I am flexible in accommodating another day, but please coordinate with me first to ensure I am available. Speaking Passports: Speaking passports are vocabulary phrases students need to study in order to promote and support the goal of 90%-100% Spanish usage in the classroom. Students are provided with a passport activity at the beginning of every theme and will have time to study and practice use of the vocabulary and phrases before being assessed. Each passport will consist of ten new phrases. Students will randomly draw seven of the ten phrases. Each phrase will be graded on a 1-7 scale with a time period for completion. Failure to complete any of the phrases by the due date will result in a 0/7. If students complete the passport assessment before the due date before or after school, students can select five of the passport phrases they want to complete and only two will be randomly drawn
4 Textbook HOLT Exprésate! Spanish 2 Students are NOT issued a textbook; however, a class set is available and students are welcome to check out a book at any time. There is a $65 replacement fee if the book is lost or damaged. School Fusion: Students and parents should check School Fusion frequently for class documents and information. Although homework is announced and posted in class, students should visit our School Fusion site to view homework assignments and upcoming assessments. Select Battlefield Info and School Fusion on the Battlefield High School website Parent Portal: Parents and students are able to view class grades online. For information on how to request an account to view your students grades go to: I highly recommend students and parents check their/their child s grades at a minimum once a week. If there is any additional information you would like me to know, please explain below: WORLD LANGUAGE/ESOL DEPARTMENT: Cheating and Plagiarism Policy - - Battlefield High School **Webster s Dictionary definition of cheating: To deceive by trickery, to mislead, fraudulent acquisition of another s property Students are expected to do their own work on assignments and tests. While a student may ask the teacher or a classmate for help with how to come up with an answer, the student should not copy down answers from someone else s paper or any teacher resource materials. Also, students should not allow another to copy their answers. This also includes online translators. **Webster s Dictionary definition of plagiarism: to steal and pass off (the ideas or words of another) as one's own; [to] use (another's production) without crediting the source; to commit literary theft (present as new/original an idea/product derived from an existing source) While many students may only consider plagiarism to relate to documents in English, the World Language/ESOL department at Battlefield High School includes the following in its definition of plagiarism: Using Internet translators for written papers Having someone else do a paper or assignment, or do the majority of a paper or assignment Copying someone else s assignment or test (including classwork and homework) Additionally, a source must be documented properly. Consequence(s) of Cheating & Plagiarism: Any student caught cheating, enabling another to cheat, or plagiarizing work will automatically receive a zero for that assignment. Other consequences may include but are not limited to parent contact and/or an administrative referral. We have read and understood Battlefield s World Language/ESOL Department s guidelines regarding cheating and plagiarism. We have also read Sra.
