1 New energy Within E.ON, we take care of 35 million customers, making us Europe s largest privately owned energy company. In Sweden, we supply electricity, gas and heating and thanks to our extensive experience, we can provide valuable advice that simplifies and improves daily life for our customers. We devote all our effort to your energy. A little book on saving energy.

2 Saving electricity is easy when you know what to do. Reducing energy consumption is good not only for your household economy but for the entire planet. And everyone can help out! We at E.ON are constantly working to develop less harmful ways of producing energy. Manufacturers of appliances, for example, are working to develop more energy-efficient machines. As a private person, you can also contribute, if you know how. Do you realize, for example, that if every household in Sweden were to change just one light bulb to a low-energy lamp, the energy savings would be enough to supply all single-family homes in Kalmar County with their entire electricity needs? The county has 234,000 residents. In this little book, you will find out how much energy is consumed in a typical home, from the smallest reading lamp to the entire heating system. You will also find out how you can substantially reduce your energy consumption without really compromising comfort in the least. A good start is to reduce the indoor temperature by one degree. Good luck with your energy saving! What is a kilowatt hour? All electricity consumption in your home is measured in a unit called a kilowatt hour (kwh). 1 kwh = 1,000 W consumed in one hour. Example: A vacuum cleaner of 1,000 W is used for one hour = 1 kwh. A 40 W light bulb that burns for 25 hours = 1 kwh. And so on. Power x Time = Energy How much is consumed? On average, about 60 percent of household energy is consumed by heating. About 20 percent is consumed by hot water showers, dishwashing, etc. The remaining 20 percent is household electricity refrigerator, washing machine, lighting, stove, dishwasher and other electrical appliances. Household electricity ( kwh) Refrigerator and freezer (1000 kwh) Lighting (1000 kwh) Washing and drying (1000 kwh) Other appliances (900 kwh) Heating ( kwh) Cooking (800 kwh) Dishwashing (300 kwh) Hot water (approx kwh) Average consumption during one year for four persons in a single-family home

4 Refrigerator/freezer/cooler With modern refrigerator/freezer/cooling appliances, you automatically save between SEK 400 and SEK 1,000 per year, compared with older equipment. DO YOU KNOW THAT: Each degree less cooling decreases energy consumption by about 10 percent for the refrigerator and 7 percent for the freezer. : Consider purchasing new appliances. There is a great difference in energy consumption between new and old. Keep the right temperature. Temperatures of minus 18 C for the freezer, 6 C for the refrigerator and 12 C for cooling are sufficient. Defrost regularly. The cooling elements will then use less energy. Dust off the back. Dust on the condenser increases electricity consumption. Place the appliances in a cool location. Not beside the cooker or oven. Make sure that air can circulate around the appliances. Store food when it is cold. Warm food in the refrigerator makes it work unnecessarily. Cooking Spice your cooking with a little sound electricity knowledge and enjoy your food as usual. DO YOU KNOW THAT: Cooking with the lid on consumes only one third as much energy. Use pans with flat bottoms and cook with the lid on. You will then get the full effect of the energy that you use. Use remaining heat. Turn off the oven and the cooker a few minutes before the food is done. Save with the microwave. Using a microwave oven is smart for warming food and preparing small quantities of food. Thaw food in the refrigerator. This uses much less energy than thawing in the microwave. Do not use the extractor fan longer than necessary. It takes away large volumes of heated air. Consider the type of equipment. With an induction cooktop, the energy saving when boiling one liter of water is 33 percent, compared with a ceramic glass cooktop. Package frozen foods well. Packaging should be air-tight. Don t use the fast-freeze button. It is only needed when you are going to freeze a large quantity. Refrigerator and Refrigerator/cooler per day Refrigerator/freezer per day Freezer per day Freezer chest per day depends on the cabinet s size and age. 5 Dishwashing A dishwasher is good and even better, if you think about how you use it. DO YOU KNOW THAT: Connecting the dishwasher to the cold water results in energy savings of percent for rinses. Washing/drying With a few simple tips, you can reduce energy consumption substantially and still get clothes just as clean. DO YOU KNOW THAT: A household washes an average of 200 loads a year! Wait until the machine is full. A full dishwasher consumes just as much energy as one that is half full. Do not wash dishes by hand under running water. This is like pouring money down the drain. Rinse moderately. It is often sufficient to scrape away remaining food before putting dishes in the dishwasher. Test the length of the program that you need to run. That way, you can avoid washing already clean dishes. Don t use the drying program. The dishes will still dry from the remaining heat. Always a full machine. A washing machine uses almost as much energy half full as when full. Use the energy-saving program and skip the pre-wash, if possible. It is not always needed. Reduce the temperature. Modern detergents do not need such high temperatures to clean items washed. Spin dry thoroughly. At least 1,000 rpm, if the wash will be tumble dried. Otherwise, the dryer will consume too much energy. Tumble dryers are better than drying cabinets. The tumble dryer consumes less energy. Condenser dryers are better than vented dryers. The condenser dryer leaves some extra heat in the house. Tumble dry moderately. Don t overload the machine. Do not dry until bone dry. Dry clothes outside in the summer it is completely free! Dishwashing by hand under running water (45 C, liters) Dishwashing by hand in dish tub (45 C, 20 liters) Dishwashing by machine, connect to cold water, heated water, motor-driven with drying element (16-22 liters) 2-4 kwh 1 kwh kwh HHousehold washer, max 5 kg (50-67 liters) Drying cabinet per hour Tumble dryer per kg Clothes spin dried at 1,000 rpm. 40 C 60 C Approx. 0.6 kwh kwh Approx. 2.0 kwh Approx. 1.0 kwh

6 Heating Heating accounts for about 60 percent of a household s energy consumption. Invest in a modern heating system. It will pay for itself in the long run. DO YOU KNOW THAT: Reducing the indoor temperature by just one degree reduces heating costs by 5 percent! Hot water There is much money to be saved here. And it is very simple, too. DO YOU KNOW THAT: Each person uses an average of liters of hot water each day. That amounts to 3-5 kwh! Measure, seal and close. Measure the temperature in various locations in the house with a thermometer. Seal drafty windows and exterior doors. Close doors to cold areas. Modernize your heating system. Old radiators often have bimetal thermostats that deteriorate over time. Invest in a centrally regulated system or radiators with electronic thermostats. Air quickly and intelligently. A short cross-draft is more effective than leaving a window open. Just make sure that the radiators by the windows are shut off for half an hour after airing. Shower quickly. If you shower five minutes, instead of 15, you reduce annual consumption by 500 kwh. Change old faucets and shower heads. Separate cold and hot water taps consume energy unnecessarily. Modern water-saving faucets run 12 liters per minute, instead of 35. Install thermostat blenders in the shower. Change worn out washers immediately. Dripping hot water facets can leak 500 kwh per year. Connect extra heating to timers. That way, they will shut off when they have done their job. Use electrical floor heating sparingly. Costs can easily run away under your feet. 7 TV/telephone/radio Today we have more electronic devices in our homes than ever before. The question is, do we need them all? DO YOU KNOW THAT: Electrical devices in stand-by mode account for 2 percent of Sweden s annual electricity consumption! Lighting Here is where the greatest savings are also the easiest change conventional light bulbs to low-energy lamps. DO YOU KNOW THAT: The best alternative for the environment is to buy fluorescent lamps with low mercury content! Shut off devices that you are not using. Computers, TVs and stereos appear to conserve energy when in stand-by mode, but appearances are deceptive. Shut them off completely, and you can save about 500 kwh per year for a normal household. Pull out the charger plug. If there is an unused charger plugged into a socket, it can continue to draw electricity until you unplug it. This applies to all chargers for mobile phones, toothbrushes, etc. Change to low-energy lamps outdoors. Measured over 10,000 hours of operation, you save SEK 200 to 300 by changing outdoor lamps. Use fluorescent lamps when lights are on over extended periods. In the garage, storerooms, over the sink, etc. You will save a lot of electricity. Use dimmers. When you reduce the lighting level, you not only create a warmer atmosphere. You also save energy.
