Elements The Times Table Game Earth Water Air Fire

Elements The Times Table Game Top Trumps with an edge. Materials The game uses 30 Element cards. Each card features four different multiplication facts linked to an icon which represents a different element (These are the Classical Elements, Earth, Water, Air and Fire - as described by Aristotle). The elements have no meaning in the game, other than as a quick way to identify a multiplication fact. Print out the last five pages of this document onto card and cut the Element boxes into separate cards. You can also use the initial page of this document as a poster, or desk mat to remind the players what each of the element symbols means. How to Play The game is played like Top Trumps, a player selects a piece of information (a times table fact, in this case) from one of his cards and the other person states their fact. The player with the better fact wins the trick and keeps all of the cards in play. Unlike traditional Top Trumps style games, in this version all of the information on the first card is visible. However, the other player does not know which fact is going to be chosen. This means both players are involved in more calculations and have to think quite carefully about how they are going to play. An example will make this clearer... mathsticks.com

Elements The Times Table Game The cards are shuffled and dealt face down, 6 to each player. The remaining cards are placed aside. Both players look through their cards. The first player, Billy, selects one of his cards and places it face up on the table. He does not say anything, but he has secretly chosen one of the multiplication facts. Billy played this card. The second player, Abigail, looks at the card. She can see the 10x10 next to the EARTH symbol. She looks through all six of her cards but cannot find one that beats the EARTH product. She chooses a card that could still beat some of Billy s multiplication facts. Abigail works out that on this card her WATER element (12 x 9) has a higher product, as does her AIR element (8 x 8). She decides to hold onto this card, and places it face down next to Billy s card. A moment later, she is glad she chose that card. Billy announces the Element and multiplication fact he has been secretly thinking of. Water, 11 x 4 is 44, he says. Abigail turns over her card to reveal she has the winning product: Water, 12 x 9 is 72. I win and she collects both cards to add to her pack. Why didn t Billy chose EARTH? He thought that 10 x 10 was too obvious a fact to use, and that Abigail would certainly choose to play a card with a higher EARTH element. That s Strategy. mathsticks.com

Elements The Times Table Game Rules: All 30 cards are shuffled and dealt - each player has 6 cards. The remainder of the pack is placed aside The first player secretly selects a multiplication fact on one of his cards and places that card face up on the table. The second player looks at the card and tries to guess which multiplication fact the first player is thinking of, they then look through all of their cards to see if they can find a card which could beat (have a higher product) the one on the table. The second player places their chosen card face down on the table. The first player announces the fact he has been thinking of by referring to it by it s Element icon. The player must also state the multiplication fact and its product. For example: Water, 6 x 8. 6 x 8 is 48. The second player turns over their chosen card and the Elements are compared. Whoever has the higher product wins both cards. If the products are the same: the two cards are placed aside and play passes to the second player Whoever wins the next trick takes all of the cards The game ends when one player has lost all of his cards mathsticks.com

Elements The Times Table Game Alternatives: Play so that... a trick is won by the player with the lowest product the game ends as soon as there is a tie (both products match), at this point the winner is the one with the most cards each player starts with only 3 cards. The remainder of the pack is placed (face down) in the middle of the table. When a player wins a trick they take their card, their opponent s card and also one from the top of the pack Two players, three hands - a game with a dummy hand: Two players. 6 cards are dealt to each player and a further 6 to a dummy (non existent) player. The two players take it in turns to play the normal Elements rules, but each time a player plays a card, one is also taken unseen from the dummy hand and placed face down in the middle of the table. When comparing the Element products, if either player wins they take all of the cards... if the dummy hand wins (purely by chance) then the game ends! One further alternative: deal all 30 cards out and play with traditional Top Trump rules! Got an idea?
