1 Junior Great Books Course Description: The Junior Great Books is a strong, inquiry-based language arts program that provides the essential elements for meeting and surpassing the goals of the New York Learning Standards for English Language Arts. This rigorous course will combine all of the reading, writing, listening and speaking components of the New York State English Language Arts learning standards and core curriculum, with a central focus of moving beyond the factual level to produce literary interpretations that explicate the multiple layers of meaning. Reading, writing, listening and speaking are integrated with the dynamic development of divergent ideas and become the tools for critically thinking and supporting responses. Learning Standards: New York Learning Standards for English Language Arts Standard 1: Students will read, write, listen, and speak for information and understanding Standard 2: Students will read, write, listen, and speak for literary response and expression Standard 3: Students will read, write, listen, and speak for critical analysis and evaluation Standard 4: Students will read, write, listen, and speak for social interaction Outcomes/Objectives: Development of vocabulary, spelling, grammar, capitalization, and punctuation skills Development of comprehension skills by formulating questions, classifying, drawing conclusions, making inferences, and making, confirming, or revising predictions Make connections between literary text and personal experience and knowledge Recognize how the author s use of language creates images or feelings Consider age, gender, social position, and cultural traditions of the writer Recognize conversational tone and types of language appropriate to social communication Evaluate the validity and accuracy of information, ideas, themes, opinions, and experiences in text by using criteria from a variety of perspectives Formulate opinions and judgments after all information has been presented Recognize the effect of one s own point of view in evaluation Compare a film, video, or stage version of a literary work with the written version Write accurate, complete responses and analyses, and elaborate with supporting details Use graphs, charts, and diagrams to communicate information Interpret, identify, and recognize literary elements, such as character, plot, setting, theme, dialogue, and point of view to enhance reading and writing skills Identify poetic elements to interpret and write poetry Write, read, or listen to, and follow written multi-step directions to complete an assignment Listen to short stories, essays, and articles to identify essential information for note taking to aid comprehension for written responses Orally present literary responses
