1 June 12, 2016 Basic Truth: God made me. Key Question: Who made everything? Bottom Line: God made everything. Memory Verse: You made the world and everything in it. Psalm 89:11, NCV Bible Story: Creation, Day 2 Sky and Water Genesis 1:6-8 Make It Fun 1. Where Am I? Where Am I? is an activity that uses listening and gross motor skills to introduce today s Bible story. What You Need: No supplies needed During the activity: Have the children spread out in an open area of the room. Tell them that you will act out an activity. If the activity you do has anything to do with water, they should say, Water. If the activity you imitate is in the sky, they should say, Sky. The activities for water could be taking a bath, snorkeling, and washing a car. The activities for sky could be flying a kite, flying like a bird, and riding in a hot air balloon. The kids can act out the motions with you as well. After the activity: Wow, you are so smart! That was fun! Last week we learned that God made the light and the dark on the first day of Creation. I can't wait to hear what He made on the second day! Are you ready to hear our true story from the Bible? 2. Up or Down Up or Down is an activity that uses sorting skills to help introduce the difference between sky and water. What You Need: A large piece of butcher paper, Sky or Water, markers, and painter s tape. Curriculum Materials for 3- through 5-year-olds 2016 The rethink Group. All rights reserved. 1
2 Before the activity: Copy the Sky or Water Activity Page onto white cardstock and cut out the images. Draw a line down the center of the butcher paper horizontally and tape it to the wall, making sure it is at the children s eye level. During the activity: Point out the butcher paper on the wall. Point to the top half of the butcher and explain that this is the sky. Point to the bottom half of the butcher paper and explain that this is the water. Hold up each of the items from the Activity Page. Have the children identify what they see and if belongs in the sky or in the water. As they give you each answer, tape the item to the top or bottom half of the butcher paper. During the activity: I have some different pictures of animals that I want to show you today. Some of them go in the water and some of them in the sky. This part of the page will be our sky and this will be our water. I want you to call out the name of the animal and then tell me if this animal belongs in the sky or in the water. After the activity: We know that birds and airplanes go in the sky and fish and boats go in the water, but who made the sky and water? That's exactly what we ll hear about in our Bible story today! Make It Real Divide kids into small groups of about five to eight children with each leader. Small Group Time What you Need: Paperclip Memory Verse Card (from the week one Activity Pages on the Web site) in your Bible at Psalm 89:11. Provide a journal and a fun-shaped pen for each small group. SMALL GROUP LEADER (SGL): Are you having fun in our Creation Station? I know I am! I had so much fun today learning about how God made the sky and water. Now our train car has sky and water stuff in it! When we re done making our Creation Station train, we will have lots and lots of stuff in it, because [Bottom Line] God made everything! And EVERYTHING is A LOT of stuff! Who made everything? CHILDREN and SGL: [Bottom Line] God made everything! SGL: Yes! [Bottom Line] God made everything! The Bible verse we re learning will help us remember that [Bottom Line] God made everything. 3 Do you remember who we said this verse is talking about when it says, YOU made the world and everything in it? (Pause.) Yay! You remembered! It s talking about God! GOD made the world and everything in it! [Bottom Line] God made everything! Who made everything? CHILDREN and SGL: [Bottom Line] God made everything! SGL: Let s stand up and say our verse together. Watch me and say what I say and do what I do! CHILDREN and SGL: You (point up) made (pound fists one on top of the other) the world (put your arms overhead to form a circle) and everything in it (spread your arms out wide), Psalm 89:11. (Open your hands like a book.) SGL: Good job! Let s say it again! (Repeat the verse a few times together.) Perfect! You can sit down now. It s time to write in our special Creation Station prayer journal! (Hold up journal.) Today we re going to make a list of our favorite sky and water things, since we learned about how God made the sky and water on Day Two. I like to watch the clouds in the sky and swim in the ocean waves. The ocean is some BIG water! When I say your name, I want you to tell me one of your favorite sky things and one of your favorite water things. Ready? Write each child s name and what they say beside their names. Remember to print the words they say so the children can recognize their names and the letters. This is such a great list! I m so glad God made the sky and water! Let s use our list to thank God for making the sky and water. Would anyone like to pray before I pray? Give each child that wants to pray the opportunity to do so. OK, my turn to pray. Prayer SGL: Dear God, we believe You made the whole world and everything in it. Thank You for making such an awesome world for us to enjoy! Today we want to thank You for making the sky and water so we can enjoy (read the list the children made). God, You are so wonderful, and we love You very much. In Jesus name, amen. 4 Make It Stick 1. Sing and Play Sing and Play is an activity that uses gross motor skills and repetition to teach the memory verse. What You Need: A blue sheet or blanket Before the activity: Stand in a circle with the children. Tell everyone to hold onto the edge of the sheet. During the activity: When you say the word sky, you and the children will hold the sheet tightly and walk in a circle. When you say the word water, you and the children will stand still and make waves with the sheet by moving it up and down. After the activity: After you have done this a few times, add the memory verse. Each time you make sky or water, sing the words of this month s memory verse to the tune of London Bridge. Before the activity: OK, everyone, I want you to pick up an edge of the blue sheet like this (demonstrate) and then step back until the sheet is tight. During the activity: Look! We made a big, blue sky! Now take a tiny step forward and move your hands up and down like this. (Demonstrate.) Look! We made water! Cool! Now listen to me. When I say the word sky, we ll pull the sheet tight. When I say the word water, we ll make waves. Here we go! (Do this several times with the kids.) After the activity: Now that you know how to do that, we re going to add a little song. Just copy me and you ll be singing it in no time! (Sing to the tune of London Bridge ) You made the world and everything in it, everything in it, everything in it. You made the world and everything in it, Psalm 89:11. Great job! Our memory verse tells us that God made everything! He made our world and EVERYTHING in it! How cool is that? Who made everything? [Bottom Line] God made everything! 5 2. Collect the Clouds Collect the Clouds is an activity that uses gross motor movements to review today s Bible story. What You Need: 2 large bags of cotton balls and 2 buckets During the activity: Show the children the cotton balls and explain that today you will pretend they are clouds. Place the buckets on the floor, about four feet apart, in an open area of the room. Explain that you will throw out the cotton ball clouds and the children are to collect them by placing them in the buckets. Continue dropping and collecting cotton balls as long as there is interest. Before the activity: Today we learned that God made the sky and water on the second day of Creation. Let's play a fun game. Today I want to see how fast you can collect these clouds. After the activity: God made the sky and water on the second day. Do we find clouds in the sky or in the water? (Pause.) That s right! In the sky! But God didn t just make the sky and water.
