1 Office of Formation for Discipleship Here is how we can help your parish ministry: 1. WORKSHOPS A. LITURGY a) Training for Lectors: This session explores the root of lay liturgical ministry, highlights the role of the assembly and reviews the place of the Liturgy of the Word. Suggestions and tips for effective proclamation will be addressed. 2 hours. b) Training for Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion: This session incorporates the spirituality of this ministry and some practicalities that arise when serving the Lord and our parishioners during the liturgy. 2 hours. c) Training for Ministers of Hospitality: This session provides the opportunity for reflection, discussion, and ongoing formation for those wishing to participate in the ministry of hospitality. 2 hours. d) Training for Ministers of Music: This session helps parishioners involved in music ministry to come to a deeper appreciation of the great gift they bring to the celebration of the Eucharist. 2 hours. e) Training for Ministers of the Word with Children (Children s Liturgy): This workshop empowers leaders to proclaim the Gospel to the very young, using words easily understood by children. 2 hours. f) Training for Ministers of Holy Communion to the Sick: Please refer to the Lay Pastoral Visitors Training Program in Section C (Parish Vitality). g) Understanding the Mass (NEW): In this workshop: (1) We observe the meanings and parts in the movement of the liturgical celebration of the Mass, (2) ponder particularly on the teaching on the Real Presence of Christ in the Eucharist and its fruits in us, and (3) enter into a time of reflection through select pieces of music on the source and summit of the Christian life. Wherever possible, Eucharistic Adoration is highly recommended as a way to conclude the workshop. 2 hours.

2 B. CATECHESIS a) Introduction to the Old Testament: This session examines the Old Testament as an expression of the religious experience of Israel. It will also explore the covenants of Israel with God (stages of salvation) from Noah to Jesus. 2 hours. b) Introduction to the New Testament: These sessions focus on encouraging and hearing the Word in a prayerfully guided reading of select writings in the New Testament. 4 sessions, 2 hours. c) Sacraments of Initiation (NEW): This workshop focuses the Sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation, and the Holy Eucharist on their unity in Christ who acts in them and communicates the grace they signify as the foundations of the Christian life. Special attention is given to (1) their origin in the mystery of Christ s life, (2) their effects and promises in us, and (3) the role of the Holy Spirit in our corresponding virtues and fruits in the life of the pilgrim Church. 2 hours. d) Exploring the Catechism: Faith Alive!: These sessions will explore the 4 major sections of the Catechism of the Catholic Church: The Profession of Faith; The Celebration of the Christian Mystery; Life in Christ and Christian Prayer. 8 sessions, 2 hours each. e) The Social Teaching of the Church (NEW): This programme provides a historical, doctrinal and practical overview of modern Catholic Social Teaching from 1891 to present. It explores the 4 fundamental principles and their application to social contemporary problems. 2 sessions, 2 hours each. f) Walking with Mary through the Liturgical Year: A multimedia series that explores Catholic beliefs and practices about the Blessed Virgin Mary, based upon the Catechism of the Catholic Church and the Liturgical Cycle. 4 sessions, 2 hours each. g) The Role of Lay Movements in the Church: This session examines the role of the lay movements in the Church in light of the Second Vatican Council. 6 hours. h) The Catechist in Service of the Parish: These sessions equip parish volunteers to prepare children, and their parents, for immediate preparation for the celebration and living of the sacraments of First Reconciliation, Eucharist and Confirmation. Upon completion participants will have an understanding of the pastoral issues, Archdiocesan guidelines, and resources available. 7 evening sessions of 2 hours or 4 Saturday sessions of 3.5 hours. i) Training for the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults - adapted for Children (RCIC): When children are ready to be initiated into the Catholic Church, they celebrate the same rites and sacraments as the adults. We will discuss strategies for developing a parish program that meets the needs of young inquirers by adapting the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults. 4 hours.

3 C. PARISH VITALITY a) Ways of Prayer (NEW): In the first part we listen to the Church s instruction on Christian prayer (its source, nature, and ends), and hear what our select saints have to say from their experiences. We put those insights and teachings into practice in the second part through individual meditation, small group sharing, and the Liturgy of the Hours. 1 Saturday session of 3 hours. b) Lectio Divina: These sessions are a way to read Scripture that helps us to open ourselves to hear what God is saying to us. 3 sessions, 2 hours each. c) Well done, good and faithful servant Reflections on Discipleship and Stewardship (NEW): Christ invites his disciples to be faithful stewards of all that we are our time, talents, and treasures, and much more! In this engaging workshop we immerse ourselves in the teaching of stewardship as discipleship through guided reflections, small group discussions and songs of praise. (Note: This is not a new fundraising programme!). 2 hours. d) Lay Pastoral Visitors Training: These sessions will prepare participants to provide pastoral visits and/or bring Holy Communion to parishioners who are confined in their homes, nursing homes and hospitals due to illness or infirmity. 3 sessions of 5.5 hours each (daytime or evenings). e) Ministers of Care Training: These sessions will help you to bring Catholic Social Teaching to life by responding to the needs of those who live at the margin of our community in a way that is both affirming and encouraging. 6 sessions of 5.5 hours each (Saturdays or weekdays) or 12 sessions of 2.5 hours each (daytime or evenings). f) Bereavement Ministry Training: These sessions are designed for volunteers who minister to the bereaved in a parish setting. Participants will engage in an interactive, faith-based educational and spiritual opportunity. 3 sessions of 5.5 hours each (Saturdays or weekdays). g) Training for Parish Hospitality Committee (NEW): The Pastoral Plan of the Archdiocese of Toronto calls each parish to establish a Hospitality Committee. This programme will help your parish achieve this pastoral objective. 2 sessions, 2 hours each. D. FAMILY LIFE a) The Family as the Domestic Church: Nurturing Family Spirituality: These sessions are intended for parents, caregivers, grandparents, and all others who support families as they strive to hand on a Catholic way of life. 3 hours. Once selections have been made from this catalogue, please contact the Office of Formation for Discipleship to book a date. If you decide to host a selected programme, it is encouraged that you invite neighbouring parishes to participate as well.

4 A minimum of 10 participants is preferred but we will make allowances to accommodate your needs. Facilitators are available for either evening or daytime sessions. Some of our programmes are available in Cantonese and Spanish. Current advertised programmes with dates, locations and times can be found at archtoronto.org/discipleship.
