1 Moses Led People of Long Ago Lesson 1 Scripture: Exodus 12:37-39; 13:17-18, Objective: Each child will learn that God takes care of him every day. Copy Visuals 1B onto colored paper so you have a Happy Camper Circle for each child. Make a sample backpack to show the children, using the instructions in the Art Center. For the Bible Story, cut the Pillar of Fire, Pillar of Cloud from Visuals 1C, and the Moses Puppet from Visuals 1D. Glue each Pillar onto a lunch-size paper sack. Glue a craft stick inside the double-sided Moses Puppet. Cut apart the Bible Words Puzzle from Visuals 1E and F. Read through this lesson for additional preparation tips. 6 Spring Lesson 1 Page 1

2 Lesson 1 Arrival Activity (5-10 minutes) Greet the children individually as they arrive. Say, Hello, [Mark]! Did you know that God loves you and God takes care of you every day? Today we will learn ways that God cares for us every day. Learning Centers (15-20 minutes) HOME LIVING CENTER Before the lesson, copy Visuals 1B onto colored paper so you have a Happy Camper Circle for each child. Display the Tent Poster from Visual 1A at the children s eye level on a wall or bulletin board. Let each child cut out a HAPPY CAMPER circle. Help him print his name at the bottom of the circle and use removable tape to tape it on the wall or bulletin board around the tent poster. Provide camping equipment, perhaps a small play tent, and let the children pretend to be on a camping trip. As they play say, I m glad God watches over us no matter where we are! ART CENTER For each child, provide a large brown paper grocery bag, two 1- x 15-inch strips of cloth, dress-up clothes (at least one item for packing ), and a 9-inch yarn length. Also supply staplers, tape, markers, stickers, and scissors. Before your lesson, make a sample backpack to show the children, using the following instructions. Then help each child make a backpack using the same instructions. Instructions: Fold down the top of a paper grocery bag about four inches to form a flap. Punch two holes, half an inch apart, through the flap, and into the body of the backpack. The bottom of the bag will form the bottom of the backpack. When the backpack is finished and filled with a dress-up item, thread the 9-inch piece of yarn through the holes on the closing flap and tie the yarn in a bow. Staple two strips of cloth to the back of the bag, forming the arm straps. Cover the staples with tape to prevent injury. Decorate the backpack with markers and stickers. As the children arrive at the Art Center, say, Today we are making backpacks. Show the children the backpack you made ahead of time. Say, You can use a backpack to carry your things when you go camping. As you show the children how to make their backpacks say, Today we will learn how Moses led the people of Israel on a camping trip. God took care of Moses and the Israelites. God takes care of us, too. Isn t it nice that God takes care of us every day? Make sure names are on the backpacks. 3 Lesson 1 backpack. Remove the dress-up items from the backpacks after the lesson if the children are taking home their backpacks. Make sure names are on the backpacks. Circle Time (10-20 minutes) PRAYER TIME As the children gather, encourage them to share their learning center experiences. Pray, thanking God for taking care of them every day. Thank God for holding the whole world, including your preschoolers, in His hands. Key Verse: I Timothy 6:17 God...giveth us richly all things to enjoy. (KJV) God...richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment. (NIV) song TIME Sing HE S GOT THE WHOLE WORLD IN HIS HANDS and GOD IS SO GOOD. Say, I m glad God took care of Moses and the Israelites as they camped in the desert. And I m glad God takes care of you and me each day! Bible Story (10-15 minutes) LISTEN TO THE BIBLE STORY Before the lesson, cut the Pillar of Fire, Pillar of Cloud from Visuals 1C, and the Moses Puppet from Visuals 1D. Glue each Pillar onto a lunch-size paper sack. Glue a craft stick inside the doublesided Moses Puppet. Tell the children that today s Bible story is about Moses leading the Israelites long ago. Ask, Before we hear today s story, who would like to lead us on a hike around our room? Have the children line up and follow the volunteer leader on a brief hike around the room. When the hikers return to their starting points, have them sit on the story rug. Give the puppets to three children. Explain that you will point to each child with a puppet when he or she should raise the puppet during the story. Hold your Bible open on your lap. Explain that this is a true story from God s Word, the Bible. GOD PROVIDES A PILLAR AND A CLOUD You could hear the sound of sheep Bah, bah. You could hear the hoofs of the goats and cattle thumping along on the hot desert sand (pat knees). Hundreds oh my! thousands of people were rushing out into the desert with Moses, their leader (pat knees more quickly). (Have the child hold up the Moses Puppet briefly; then lower it.) 4 Lesson 1 time to take much food with them except dough for their bread! That doesn t sound very tasty, does it? God had told Moses to gather the Israelites together and quickly leave the land of Egypt. Moses knew that God would show them which way to go through the desert, but Moses didn t know exactly how God would do it. Very soon Moses found out how God would lead them. God had a very special way to lead the people through the desert. During the day, God placed a huge cloud in the sky (child raises Cloud Puppet). The cloud moved in the direction that God wanted the Israelites to travel (child lowers Cloud Puppet). And at night, God put a pillar of fire in the sky (child raises Fire Puppet) so the nighttime would not be so dark and the Israelites could see which way to go (child lowers Fire Puppet). God led the Israelites through the desert toward the Red Sea. The people traveled in the desert all day. At night they had to stop and set up camp. They baked bread to eat, using the raw dough they had taken from Egypt. Then they rested. I m glad that God took care of Moses and the Israelites as they camped in the desert. And I m glad that God takes care of you and me each day! Review the BIBLE STORY Before the lesson, place a large box or tub of sand on an area of floor covered with newspapers (or plan to take the children to a sandbox at this time). Fold a small piece of brown construction paper in half to make a small tent (or several tents). Provide small people and animal figures (or pre-made stick figures, using chenille wires) for the children to stand up in the box or tub of sand. Let the children act out the Bible story with the figures. Say, Just as God took care of Moses and the Israelites as they camped in the desert, God takes care of each of us each day! Bible Memory Verse (5 minutes) I Timothy 6:17 God giveth us richly all things to enjoy. (KJV) God richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment. (NIV) Before the lesson, cut apart the Bible Words Puzzle from Visuals 1E and 1F. Change the words if you use the NIV version. Print the NIV words on the puzzle if you use the NIV memory verse. Read the Bible memory verse aloud from your Bible. Place the pictures and words in order on a bulletin board or wall and say the Bible memory verse together several times. Explain that the picture Teacher Tip Bible Background When the Israelites left their first camp at Succoth, they apparently traveled southeastward to the edge of the Etham desert, where they set up their second camp (Exodus 13:20). During the Israelites journey, God led them in a visible and reassuring way. He provided a cloud pillar to guide them during day travel, and a fire pillar for night travel. And because either the cloud or fire pillar always remained in front of them, they were guided by God s own presence (verses 21-22). The same cloud that guided the Israelites when they left Succoth led them step-by-step to the Promised Land. Whenever the cloud of God s presence lifted from the tabernacle and moved, the Israelites would set out, traveling wherever the cloud led them (Exodus 40:36). But if the cloud did not move from the tabernacle, the Israelites stayed put (verse 37). Cloud and fire are often used as symbols of God s presence in the Hebrew Scriptures. Indeed, God gave Moses the Ten Commandments on Mount Sinai in the midst of smoke and fire (19:18). Fire symbolizes God s holiness in Deuteronomy 4:24, His protective presence in II Kings 6:17, His wrath against sin in Isaiah 66:15-16, and His righteous judgment in Zechariah 13:9. 5 Lesson 1 for richly shows a happy person, saying, How wonderful! Say, Richly in our Bible Words does not mean money or riches. It means many wonderful things more wonderful than we can imagine. Remove the Bible Words Puzzle pieces one by one as you have the children say them with you several times. Then divide the children into two groups. Assign a leader to each group. Group 1 says up to richly (KJV) or us (NIV). Group 2 responds with the rest of the Bible Words. Have each group say its half of the Bible Words several times. Then have everyone say the Bible Words all together one final time. Bible Learning Activities (20-25 minutes) Bible Activity Give the children crayons or markers, star stickers, and Activity Sheet 1A. Read aloud the Bible lesson statements and the instructions. Help the children trace the dots to see the cloud during the day and the fire at night. Give each child a few star stickers to place in the night sky. Point out that God took care of Moses and the Israelites as they camped in the desert. Say, I m glad God takes care of each of us each day! Bible Craft Give each child crayons or markers, a craft stick, glue, scissors, and Activity Sheets 1B and 1C. Read through the illustrated directions on 1B and point out the Bible Words Puppet on 1C. Let each child cut out a Bible Words Puppet and glue a craft stick on the back. Help each child fold the puppet in half around the craft stick and glue the two halves together, then let him print his name on the craft stick handle. As the children work, say, I am glad that God takes care of us and gives us things we need. Food is something we need. A place to live is another thing we need. God gave the Israelites the things they needed. Thank You, God, for giving us the things we need. Bible Game Let the children wear their backpacks from the Art Center. Have a chair at one end of the room. Have the children line up at the opposite end of the room from the chair. (You may want to have several chairs and play in teams if you have a large group of children. Have one adult helper for each team.) 6 Lesson 1 moment, then running back to tag the next child in line. Then that child runs to the chair, sits in it for a moment, and runs back to tag the next child. Stop the music periodically. When the music stops, instruct the child sitting in the chair to fill in the blank as the rest of the children say, God richly provides us with. Then have everyone say, Thank You, God, for. You might have to help some children fill in the blanks with answers such as family, friends, pets, favorite foods, etc. Close by saying, I m glad God takes care of each of us each day! snack Let the children help put out fruit, crackers, napkins, and paper cups. Pour water or milk to drink. As the children enjoy the snack, remind them that God gives us the things we need, such as food. Ask, [Jason], do you know where our food comes from? Before it was in the grocery store and before it came to our houses, fruit was growing outside on trees or bushes. Milk comes from cows. God loves us and takes care of us by creating the plants and animals that give us food and drink. Closing Prayer (5-10 minutes) Pray, thanking God for His loving care for each of us.
