We hope that the site will be a great source of information for you. Have a great week, Mr J Kiwi-a-thon By now you would have had a notice come home about this years Kiwi-a-thon. This is a major fundraiser for us and we appreciate all families getting in behind this event. Please take note of the important dates in the notice. 2 news. Franklin Arts Festival Pokeno was offered the opportunity to participate in this years festival at the last minute as another school pulled out very late. One of our parents, Sarah Quinlan, offered to work with a group of children from across all levels of the school. Teachers selected children from their class to take part. Sarah and the children did an amazing job and were rewarded with 2 nd place in the schools section!! Congratulations also to Caleb who won judges choice. The festival is in the Pukekohe Town Hall and runs until this Sunday. It is well worth a visit. Franklin Cross Country A team of 18 Pokeno children represented East Group at the Franklin Cross Country held at the Pukekohe A & P Showgrounds yesterday. They all performed well and we were thrilled with the way that they accepted the challenge of competing at that level. Special congratulations to Cole (4 th in year 8) and Jahko (2 nd in year 7) who will go on to represent Franklin at the Auckland Year 7 & 8 Championships. Lost property Please remember to check lost property, we seem to have a constant supply of clothing!! bank account change We are in the process of shifting from ANZ to ASB. For all future online payments please take note of the schools new bank account number: th Jubilee sponsorship The jubilee committee continues to work towards this celebration in March next year. The committee would like to thank Pokeno Village Estate for their generous sponsorship of $5000. This sponsorship will enable certain aspects of the weekend to be heavily subsidised, including the hangi lunch on the Saturday. The committee is also looking for sponsorship for the jubilee magazine. If your family or business is interested in supporting the production of the magazine please for more information. Fear Factor Four of our senior students, (Cole, Chloe, Jahko, and Kyarla) competed in the annual Police Fear Factor competition on the 21 st August. They took part in a number of activities including both mental and physical challenges. The kids had a great day and we are proud of the way they represented Pokeno. Daylight Saving and sleep With daylight savings just around the corner it is important to remember that most school aged children need hours sleep a night. Late nights can have a major impact on childrens ability to learn. Please make sure your children are getting enough sleep as it will help them to focus during the day. 2

3 news & reminders. A note from Room 8 Room 8 will be collecting coloured milk bottle lids for a class art project and would like any unwanted lids sent to room 8. As year 7 and 8 s we would like to give something back to the school. Kind regards, Anaru and Jenny Website Sponsorship If your business would like to support the school you can appear on our website as one of our sponsors. Sponsorship on the website will cost $150 for 12 months. Please contact Spare clothes Just a reminder that at this time of the year it is important for the children to have a spare change of clothes in their bag. It is very easy for children to trip, slip or fall as they are playing and that will often result in very wet clothes!! Helenslee Road Children Please be aware that for the children who walk home across the field towards Helenslee Road, the fields are very wet at the moment. Gumboots would be a great way to keep feet warm and dry! Fortnightly Focus Friendly Everyone is welcome Congratulations to our Inclusive TERRIFIC Kids who received certificates at our last assembly.. Room 2 Te Ata Room 3 Zach Room 4 Kyle Room 6 Allison Room 7 Cameron Room 8 Ryan BOARD TALK Welcome to Board Talk. Board meetings are public meetings and anyone is welcome to attend. Coming along to a meeting is another great way of finding out what the board does. The next meeting will be Monday 7 th September at 7pm. This meeting will be held in the resource room, which is the room next to the swimming pool. Regards, Marg Northcott, Claudia Duffus, Adrian Clark, Angela Judge, Sarah Welch, Blair Johnston POKENO COMMUNITY GROUP Meetings are held every second Tuesday of the month. 7:30pm in the Pokeno town hall. Everyone is welcome. For more information 3

4 Kids love to learn YEAR TWO Make reading fun reading at home needs to be fun and easy, something you look forward to, a time for laughter and talk. Talk about reading Talk about the story and the pictures, other stories you have read, and experiences you have both had that are like those in the story Sometimes you can be the listener, sometimes the reader and sometimes you can take turns. They might like to read to the cat, the dog, their teddy or a big brother All children like to be read to, so don t stop reading to them no matter how old they are Encourage your child to read all sorts of things the TV guide in the newspaper, street signs, food labels. Simple recipes are great you get to eat what you ve read about, too. Here's a tip - talk with your child all the time and give them time to talk with you. You can use your first language.
