3 WELCOME TO YOUR LEARNING JOURNEY AT SOUTHERN CROSS CAMPUS A Message from the Principal and Directors Hundreds of years ago brave Polynesian seafarers explored the Pacific in search of new lands. To find New Zealand they followed seasonal winds, seabirds and mighty whales migrating south. By day they pursued the sun high above the horizon, and beneath the starry heavens by night they steered between Matariki and Tautoru and followed Te Taki o Autahi the Southern Cross. Not just a place to learn, but somewhere to dream, to flourish and to grow. A place where we support young people on their journey to becoming confident young adults, helping them develop resilience, fulfill their potential, set and reach goals and ultimately reach for the stars. southerncross.school.nz

4 Welcome to Southern Cross Campus College At Southern Cross Campus, we are committed to student success learning comes first. We believe it is our job to help our students to develop into proud, confident and resilient learners, who strive for personal and academic excellence. We are committed to ensuring the best learning experiences for our learners, applying quality modern learning practices and having high expectations of all our learners. We live our values through the Southern Cross Campus values; Respect, Relationships, Responsibility, and Resilience. Our Vision of working together for success enables us to work together effectively for the benefit of our students. Southern Cross Campus College Prospectus 2017 Excellent Learning We believe that excellent learning can only come through high quality teaching and sound educational leadership. Our teachers are committed to creating the best learning environment for your child, and to seeing them succeed in every way possible within a curriculum designed to meet the needs of this unique community. Focused learning in the classroom is combined with successful sporting and cultural opportunities that enrich development of the whole individual. Our inter-house competitions encourage enthusiastic participation, and our cultural groups regularly perform at local events and on the national stage. We embrace opportunities to be involved in research with leading universities and we are often visited by high-profile political figures who affirm our innovative programmes Home-School Partnership Here at Southern Cross Campus we value a strong home-school partnership and the role that parents play in encouraging their children to work hard and to succeed. We expect involvement and positive interest by parents in their children s education because it builds two-way communication between home and school and increases the value of education in the minds of our students. We believe parental participation and support in school activities is vital and we value your input, especially at report evenings, NCEA target group meetings, and fundraisers. Every young person responds to positive interest shown in them by an adult, but especially from their parents and teachers. Together we can build self-confidence in our young people so that they believe in themselves and have a valued contribution to make both now and in the future. Celebrating Achievement Every year families and whanau join us to share in the celebration of achievement. These celebrations and prizegivings are eagerly awaited and are outstanding highlights of every year. We are proud to see students achieve but also to see them acknowledge the support they have received throughout the years and to see all parents taking a prominent role in affirming a strong belief in their child s future. At these celebrations we are proud to have created a heritage of success where past students return to congratulate the graduating year and encourage them to go on to achieve their full potential. These are also occasions to affirm our links to tertiary learning at universities and technical institutes, reinforcing the message to all our students that you can do it.

5 5 Southern Cross Campus Year 13 Level 3 NCEA 100 Number of Students Attendance Expectations At Southern Cross Campus, we believe regular attendance is a vital component to success. Students must strive to be self managing and take responsibility for all aspects of their learning. We value the support our parents offer and always look forward to working together for the good of our children and community at large. Scholarships At each level from Year 7 upwards students have the opportunity to achieve scholarships to support their study at school. These scholarships are for students who have excelled in both academic and sporting areas. Information about the scholarships is available in our enrolment packs. At Year 13, the Southern Cross Campus Foundation and a number of tertiary providers also offer scholarships to a number of our students to aid them with their tertiary study. University Mates Programme Year 13 students are given the extra opportunity to join the Mates (Mentoring) programme. The benefits for the students are immense. Each week they meet with their own mentor, a student from university, as part of an organised study and homework centre. Students are given valuable guidance and support in their last year of school while transitioning into tertiary study. Pathways in Languages For our students to develop a clear sense of self-identity we place a strong value on the students cultural background in many aspects of school life. One of the ways this is done is through offering Pasifika languages such as Samoan and Tongan right up to NCEA Level 3. Students wishing to develop their skills in Te Reo are able to study to Level 3 NCEA. We are looking in the future to further develop the range of languages offered in the senior college. Technology within the curriculum Our students are living in a digital world and at Southern Cross students have access to computers and other technologies on a regular basis. Students regularly have the opportunity to use information computer technologies in specialist areas and have access to them as part of the learning tools in many subject areas. Cultural Groups Our students have the opportunity each year to celebrate their own cultural backgrounds by performing in cultural groups at the campus and at regional events. Trips to Pacific Islands are regularly offered as part of the development programme for students understanding of their own heritage and further extension of their language skills.

Gifted and Talented Programme Our programmes, with major cognitive and creative elements, are offered to selected students. THE KEY FOCUS IS LEARNING College Curriculum: The curriculum offered at the college is very much focused around students developing meaningful pathways for their chosen careers beyond school. Students have a wide choice of subjects which aim to cater for the wide range of interests, abilities and skills of the students. Senior Curriculum Years The courses offered are designated in terms of the NCEA level rather than the year level of the student. This allows students to study courses at a range of levels regardless of their chronological age. The number of students who are accelerated beyond their chronological age in terms of the NCEA level course they are studying is growing. More students each year are entering for scholarship level subjects having done the equivalent subject at Level 3 as a Year 12 student. These students are identified in Year 10. The numbering system of the courses offered makes it clear to students which courses lead to a pathway towards university and which courses are aimed at other pathways of study and work. The college belongs to Harbournet and through this e-learning facility we have been able to cater even more for the diverse range of interests of our students in terms of selection of subjects. College students where necessary are also given extra support through the Accelerated Learning Centre and ESOL Department as well as the many tutorials run by college staff to support students in their studies. Vocational Pathways A main driver to the structure, organisation and emphasis of the Senior Curriculum is the Vocational Pathways Framework. This framework focuses on the students developing a pathway from school through tertiary and onto a career pathway. NCEA Level 2 courses are structured and aligned around a Vocational Pathway. Students are offered a connected and relevant curriculum which sees the school, tertiary and industry working together to ensure our students have the skills and pathway to a successful future. southerncross.school.nz

We aim to develop skills in our students that will produce resilient, confident and goal orientated learners of the future.

These principles and values are the cornerstone upon which we build the strong, positive and respectful relationships that typify and are integral to the daily life of the Southern Cross Campus community. LIFE LONG FRIENDSHIPS We are fortunate in having a number of professionals that make up the Pastoral Support team: guidance counsellors, social workers, nurses, a doctor and physiotherapist. The team shares a common belief in the intrinsic value of each individual student and a commitment to providing an effective and efficient service that caters to the diverse needs of the community. They work with students to be resilient, to have respect for self and others and to foster a love of learning, a sense of belonging and being a part of the Southern Cross Campus community. Another key aspect of the pastoral care in the College is the House system. All Southern Cross College Y7 13 students belong to a House. There are four Houses: Kauri, Pohutukawa, Rimu and Totara. The House system is a foundation for building identity, purpose, competition, achievement, and celebration. It also offers a framework for creating student leadership opportunities where older students proactively assist and support the younger students. Each house has two House Leaders who work closely with their students and families to support their learning outcomes and to ensure that the student has a positive, productive and successful college experience. The House system is regarded as a home away from home a positive extension of the family and community where students feel valued and connected. Southern Cross Campus College Accelerated Learning Centre The Accelerated Learning Centre offers a comprehensive range of learning support programmes. These include specialist help to address literacy and numeracy needs, peer reading, and peer mentoring programmes, individual and group learning. Students at Southern Cross Campus belong to a community of learners. The leadership of Southern Cross Campus is committed to the concept of the lifelong learner, where skills and abilities are taught to ensure students learn how to learn. The Accelerated Learning Centre ensures success in and beyond secondary school. Some students attend mainstream lessons whilst others are taught a differentiated curriculum within the Accelerated Learning Centre. Some students have an Individual Education Plan (IEP) which is reviewed twice yearly in consultation with parents. The role of the centre is diverse a blend of social and academic aims and a commitment to assist not only the students but also the parents, caregivers and teaching staff to bridge gaps in understanding and to ensure that learning experiences are positive. There are always highly qualified teachers available to assist and opportunities for independent learning to take place at the Accelerated Learning Centre.
