3 A few reasons to try natural birth control You ll keep your breasts There's growing evidence that hormonal birth control massively increases the risk of breast cancer. The pill / hormonal birth control was deemed a Group One carcinogen by the WHO in One study by the Mayo Clinic showed that women have a 44% increased risk of getting breast cancer if taking oral contraceptives four years or more before having children. Swedish oncologist Hakan Olsson found that before age 20, women increase their breast cancer risk by 1000%. In The Breast Cancer Prevention Program, Sam Epstein, MD, writes, more than 20 well-controlled studies have demonstrated the clear risk of premenopausal breast cancer with the use of oral contraceptives. These estimates indicate that a young woman who uses oral contraceptives has up to ten times the risk for developing breast cancer as does a non-user, particularly if she uses the Pill during her teens or early twenties; if she uses the Pill for two years or more; if she uses the Pill before her first full-term pregnancy; if she has a family history of breast cancer. You ll revive your libido Many women who are on hormonal birth control also complaint of low libido. Many studies have confirmed that the hormonal birth control has an impact on libido, lubrication and enjoyment of sex. You become more in tune with your body By listening to the signs that your body has to give you about your fertility and not having to rely on an outside source, you strengthen your ability to hear more of your body s messages in general. You can hear other cues better, like hunger, arousal, fatigue and your gut feeling or intuition.

4 You ll preserve the natural rhythms of your hormones and your cycle Suppressing normal hormonal ebbs and flows wreaks havoc on women s systems. They feel the effects in everything from mood swings to weight gain. It s free Women's rights activist Sandra Fluke claimed that she spent USD 1,000 on birth control every year. Natural birth control costs nothing. You don t need any kind of equipment or device. Except your finger. It will be easier for you to get pregnant, when you decide to Getting to know your body s natural windows of fertility and infertility will make it easy to know when to aim for sex dates. The pill also attribute the myriad problems women have trying to get pregnant once they come off hormonal birth control to years of altering hormones and suppressing ovulation. Birth control becomes a shared responsibility Both partners can participate in the process of observing and charting fertility. The Billings Method involves recording your cycle on a wall chart, in plain view for both partners to see. Understanding and practicing the method together builds intimacy.

5 Natural alternatives to hormonal contraceptives Natural Family Planning (NFP) or Fertility Awareness Methods (FAM) are natural ways of preventing or achieving pregnancy based on the body s natural hormonal cues. These methods carry no side effects and actually help women get to know their bodies better. The basic concept is using cues like Basal Body Temperature (BBT), mucus production, cervical position and other symptoms to effectively predict ovulation and avoid intercourse during this time. Your menstrual cycle Your menstrual cycle lasts from the first day of your period until the day before your next period starts. The length of a woman s menstrual cycle can vary. Anything from 24 to 35 days is common, although it could be longer or shorter than this. The average length of the menstrual cycle is 28 days. Ovulation During your menstrual cycle: Hormones are released to stimulate your ovaries A tiny egg stored in one of your ovaries begins to grow and mature When the egg is mature, it s released from your ovary (a process called ovulation) and travels down the fallopian tube Occasionally a second egg is released, within 24 hours of the first egg. Ovulation occurs roughly halfway through your menstrual cycle, usually around 10 to 16 days before the start of your next period. Ovulation could happen earlier or later than this, depending on the length of your cycle. When calculating your fertile time, you need to take into account the uncertainty over exactly when you ovulate. For pregnancy to happen, a sperm needs to meet the egg to fertilise it. Sperm can live in a woman's body for up to seven days after sex.

6 As the length of a menstrual cycle can vary over time, to make sure your calculations are as precise as possible, you will need to measure your menstrual cycle over the course of 12 months. Calculating the length of your cycle is not a reliable way of working out your fertile time and should not be used on its own as a fertility indicator. The temperature method The temperature method is based on the fact that there is a small rise in body temperature after ovulation takes place. You will need to use either a digital thermometer or a thermometer specifically designed for natural family planning. These are available from pharmacies. Ear or forehead thermometers are not accurate enough to be used in this way. The temperature method involves: Taking your temperature every morning before you get out of bed. This should be done before eating or drinking anything, before smoking and ideally at the same time every morning. Look out for three days in a row when your temperature is higher than all of the previous six days. The increase in temperature is very small, usually around 0.2C (0.4F). It is likely that you are no longer fertile at this time. Cervical secretion monitoring method There is a change in the amount and consistency of the mucus secreted from your cervix during different times in your menstrual cycle. You can check this by gently placing your middle finger into your vagina and pushing it up to around your middle knuckle. For the first few days after your period, you will probably find that your vagina is dry and you cannot feel any mucus. As the levels of hormones rise to prepare your body for ovulation, you will probably find that your cervix is now producing mucus that is: Moist and sticky White and creamy

7 This is the start of the fertile period of your menstrual cycle. Immediately before ovulation the mucus will get: Wetter Clearer Slippery, a bit like raw egg white This is when you are at your most fertile. The mucus should then soon return to being thicker and sticky, and after three days you should no longer be fertile.

8 Combining fertility methods awareness It is best to combine all three methods to give you a more accurate picture of when you are likely to be most fertile. You can use fertility charts to record information from all three methods, which you can then track over the course of each menstrual cycle. You can download fertility charts from the Fertility Education and Training site ( with information on how to use them. There are also applications you can download for smartphones or software for your computer that allow you to track this information. Effectiveness Rates Several studies have shown that fertility awareness methods are 98% effective when abstaining from sex during your fertile phase. One study even showed it to be 99% effective at preventing pregnancy when used alongside continuous coaching and monthly reviews. During your fertile phase, however, effectiveness ratings totally depend on the barrier method you choose to use. If, for example, you choose to go with condoms while you re ovulating, you ll have a 98% effectiveness rating during that time. For women who use FAM correctly and consistently, it is very effective. But as with all birth control methods, typical use could be a different story. The most common reason pregnancies occur while using FAM is due to conscious non-compliance (or knowingly having unprotected sex on one of your fertile days). The second most common cause is due to mistakes made while charting which means it is absolutely critical that you receive proper training on how to use this method. You ll have to be disciplined and chart your cycle every day, and unlike hormonal birth control methods there s no such thing as cheating. A slip up right in the middle of your fertile phase means baby-making central! As long as you are responsible, everything will be fine!

9 Choose a barrier method Condoms You think you hate them, but give them a chance. They really aren t so bad. And if you choose to follow the Fertility Awareness Method, you ll only have to use them about 8-10 days per month. (That means another 20 or so days of condom- free sex!) If you can t get your man on the FAM plan, just stick to these guys and you ll be safe. Get creative about how you put them on and you ll both be more likely to love them. Withdrawal There are no live sperm in pre-ejaculatory fluid. So long as your man can get on out of there before ejaculation occurs, you are in the clear. As always, I still recommend charting. While this method is 96% effective overall, that extra 4% inevitably happens during a woman s peak fertility. Diaphragms Similar to a condom but with the added benefit of being able to put it in place ahead of time, Diaphragms sit up in your cervix (alongside some handy spermicide) to block whatever sperm comes its way.
