1 Tennis NZ Talent ID Prcess Targeted Recruitment: As part f the rll ut f Tennis NZ s High Perfrmance Player Develpment Strategy, which is targeted at players with the ptential f reaching a rank f tp 150 we are undertaking an n-ging targeted recruitment sweep f NZ. This is t help us reach int all crners f the NZ Tennis cmmunity and keep abreast f pprtunities t attract and retain high perfrming athletes in tennis. We are ffering a prgramme f additinal supprt that is available t yung NZ ers wh, n the basis f selectin prcesses, may be able t develp their tennis ptential int becming a high level perfrmer (tp 150 ATP/WTA rank) in the future. This prcess is difficult, subjective and there are many factrs t cnsider Sprt NZ studies n whether it is pssible t predict future talent highlight the fllwing findings: 1. Talent is dynamic and multi-dimensinal, and cannt be accurately r easily predicted. 2. Gifted athletes can emerge at any stage f develpment. 3. Envirnment, genetics, mental ability, physilgy, and supprt are all key t develping talent. 4. Envirnment is the easiest element t influence. 5. Sme cmmn attributes f tp perfrming athletes are as fllws: they were very active as children they specialised in ne sprt later in their develpment they were mtivated by the jy f sprt rather than winning They had access t caching frm an early age. 6. Playing a range f sprts develped a mre advanced skill set fr an athlete than cncentrating n ne sprt frm an early age. 7. Inhibiting factrs were a lack f scial and financial supprt, and fathers wh demanded success 1

2 Taking this int cnsideratin, Tennis NZ will cntinually strive t prvide a well-targeted, inclusive talent identificatin prcess which will give athletes with the ptential fr elite success, access t the Tennis NZ high perfrmance prgramme. 2

3 Tennis Ht Shts U12 Years All Tennis Ht Shts delivery persnnel are identifying talent 1. Lcal Talent ID Days Parents, lcal cach, teacher Athletic test, standardised statins 2. Reginal Talent Reginal days attended by Talent ID staff tennis type testing intrduced 3. Natinal Talent Squad Players in lcal areas with lcal cach but cmpeting natinally tennis fcussed aptitude tests (T be implemented in 2014) Tennis New Zealand HP Player Develpment Pathway (supprted by TNZ) HP Strategy talent ID prcess 4. Develpment Targeted Athlete 10-14years Steps: - Athletes are identified thrugh results at Turnaments (winners = talent), their cach r direct cntact with TNZ - Once identified, TNZ HP caches are infrmed and they will plan a visit t the regin and assess these nminated athletes ne n ne - The athlete then after initial assessment may be invited t attend a Develpment Camp run by Tennis NZ which is at varius times thrughut the year. The camps will prvide further infrmatin abut the new athletes and act as a trial fr the Targeted Athlete prgramme (These athletes are shwing pssible ptential t in the future reach a ATP/WTA 150 rank) 3

Elite Targeted Athlete 12-18years Athletes have likely cme frm TNZ Develpment squad Athletes have been n Tur verseas with TNZ and perfrmed with distinctin (These athletes are shwing prbable ptential t in the future reach a ATP/WTA 150 rank) Transitinal Players Offshre Years Players have likely been at US Cllege and perfrmed with distinctin (tp 15 NCAA at stages thrugh Cllege years) May have been selected fr NZ Davis Cup/Fed Cup Teams Fall int TNZ perfrmance Funnel criteria and are tracking twards a rank f ATP/WTA 150 Have been in cmmunicatin Tennis NZ HP caches (These athletes are shwing ptential in the near future t reach a ATP/WTA 150 rank) Any player can be nminated by themselves r anther persn by filling in the Athlete Questinnaire n the Tennis NZ web page and submitting this fr cnsideratin t being selected fr the TNZ Targeted athlete prgramme. 4
