2 Background In August 2013 Zoe Cornell from the CASS Marketing and Communications Office, along with staff from all Academic Colleges, the Division of International and Student Recruitment (DIOSR) and the Deputy Vice Chancellor, Professor Marnie Hughes-Warrington visited New Zealand as part of the ANU recruitment trip. The primary purpose of this trip was to attend the ANU Advisory sessions in Christchurch, Dunedin, Wellington and Auckland and ANU Alumni functions in Wellington and Auckland. Dr Alex Cook from the School of History also attended the trip on the Wellington and Auckland legs and met with two schools in these cities, as well as attending the Advisory and Alumni functions. This recruitment trip was supported by advertising in all of the cities, including press advertising and radio advertising and invitations sent by the Alumni office, inviting alumni and friends to the alumni reception. The trip was also promoted on the ANU website. Professor Marnie Hughes-Warrington also held a public lecture, Navigating the edge of the world, in Wellington and Auckland. Melbourne University also visited New Zealand at the same time, holding events on the same nights as ANU. Many prospective students commented that they had also been to the Melbourne University information session. Recommendations For future events it is recommend that the College only participates in the North Island component of the trip. This is due to the very small numbers of CASS enquiries in the South Island and feedback from other Colleges of a similar nature. Future visits to New Zealand should just focus on this market and be shorter in length. Another recommendation would be to continue to visit key schools in cities visited and to arrange visits with international education agents in these cities in order to capitalise on onshore Other activities that could be undertaken including interviews/ visits with CASS alumni and building on relationships with key schools and other institutions, such a potential university partners. 2

3 The College was asked consistently about Summer Research Scholarships (SRS) as this is a great way for students to come across from New Zealand, to get an introduction to the ANU experience. The SRS alumni that I met with in Wellington all had very strong positive associations with the College as a result of participating in the program and were considering undertaking Higher Degrees by Research (HDR) study in the College. 3

This could be due to the low number of high school students still residing in Christchurch after the earthquakes. In total there were 18 attendees over the three hour period for the Advisory. 5 Tuesday 6 th August 2013 Visit to Columba College, Dunedin ANU Attendees Michelle Mabille, Marketing Manager, ANU College of Law Zoe Cornell, Acting Deputy Manager, Marketing and Communications, College of Arts and Social Sciences Visit to Columba College in Dunedin with Michelle and Jimmy. We delivered a presentation and spoke with a group of approximately 10 year 11, 12 and 13 students about the University. 6 Comments: This session was very quiet with very few attendees which is surprising given the proximity of the event location to Otago University. The College received questions about why there was no Summer Research Scholarships in Archaeology and I passed the details of two interested Honours students onto the school for follow up I advised one prospective PhD student on the process for applying for a PhD in the College There was strong interest in Summer Research Scholarships in Archaeology CASS enquiries The college received two enquiries at this session o 2 Honours students in Archaeology o 1 PhD in interdisciplinary and cross cultural research 6

7 Wednesday 7 th August Visit to Wellington Girls College ANU Attendees Dr Alex Cook, Lecturer in History Zoe Cornell, Acting Deputy Manager, Marketing and Communications, College of Arts and Social Sciences Visit to Wellington Girls College with Dr Alex Cook from the School of History. Dr Cook gave a one hour guest lecture to a year 13 history class on the Age of Enlightenment and Captain Cook s Voyage. Dr Cook s guest lecture was very well received by the students and they were particularly impressed with his time aboard the replica Endeavour and the transit of Venus. 8 : This event was better attended than both the Christchurch and Dunedin events. The venue was easily accessible and convenient for guests that had pre-registered to attend. In total 25 people attended this advisory session. The College received some high quality PhD enquiries and were advised on the process for applying for a PhD and the College pre-application checklist. Prof Hughes-Warrington gave a speech. I met with two former SRS students who were both interested in returning to ANU for HDR study. Dr Cook also attended this event and spoke to an Alumna interested in studying a PhD in Environmental History. 8

9 Thursday 8 August, Auckland Epsom Girls Grammar School Visit ANU Representatives Amy Taylor, Marketing Officer, College of Business and Economics Caroline Bradshaw Manager, Marketing & Communications, ANU College of Medicine, Biology & Environment, ANU College of Physical & Mathematical Sciences Zoe Cornell, Acting Deputy Manager, Marketing and Communications, College of Arts and Social Sciences I attended Epsom Girls Grammar with Caroline and Amy and gave the ANU wide presentation. Epsom has produced 5 students who have come to ANU, including one Bachelor of Arts student. There were about 30 students in total at the presentation. We also met with Careers Advisor Tia Greenstreet. Students were also advised of the accommodation process through UAC and the accommodation guarantees. Note: Dr Cook met with the History department at Kings College for approximately two hours during this time and spoke with them about the introduction of studies about the French Revolution into their curriculum. This could be due to the proximity of the venue to the University of Auckland campus and the city centre. The College received strong interest from potential PhD students who are interested in undertaking a PhD in Political Science with Dr Maria Rost-Rublee, all former students. This College received a total of eight enquiries, which were all of a very high quality across UG and HDR cohorts. Professor Marnie Hughes- Warrington gave a public lecture on MOOCs. While there were no CASS Alumni at present at this event I was able to meet with Alumni from other Colleges and their guests, and other guests including local careers advisors. 10

11 Friday 9 th August Visit to St Kentigerns College, Auckland ANU representatives Amy Taylor, Marketing Officer, College of Business and Economics Zoe Cornell, Deputy Manager, Marketing and Communications, College of Arts and Social Sciences Visit to St. Kentigerns with Amy Taylor from CBE. I gave a general ANU presentation to a group of 12 students and Amy and I responded to College level questions. This presentation was well attended by students given that it was before class at 8am. Students were advised of the application process through UAC and other key information including the accommodation guarantee. Visit to ACG Auckland Amy Taylor, Marketing Officer, College of Business and Economics Zoe Cornell, Deputy Manager, Marketing and Communications, College of Arts and Social Sciences Visit to ACG Auckland with Jimmy and Amy. We gave the general ANU presentation and then spoke about our individual College and areas of strength. This was a very well attended presentation with about 30 students. Students were studying both the International Baccalaureate (IB) and Cambridge A Levels, so we advised on both. Students had also been visited by Melbourne University recently and had been told about the Melbourne University accommodation process and application deadlines. 11
