3 Market Update Transformation and disruption are the current buzzwords in the tech world, with these forming a significant part of the presentations and discussions at Auckland s 2016 CIO summit. The developing role of the CIO in light of such major changes, from traditional technology manager to key innovator with influence across the business, was also examined at this event. Looking deeper into these changes, the Global Attract survey found that respondents believe the role of the CIO has become more business focussed (39%), that CIOs are now required to demonstrate how and where they have added value (17%), that the role has become more customer centric (14%) and that the role has become more marketing/digital focused (12%). With this industry wide digital disruption at play senior IT executives now need to keep ahead of developments and trends in digital transformation, UX design and other areas where customer interaction is key. Enterprise organisations are increasingly moving to Agile development methods, with subsequent cultural and organisational changes and challenges. Further to this, the majority of IT executives (41%) are finding their top challenge to be balancing the need for innovation with budgets. In spite of these challenges, the majority of respondents (69%) are either very or fairly satisfied in their roles. e-commerce and bitcoin looks set to increase.areas where demand has reduced include digital strategy and execution, Chief Marketing Officers and Chief Product Officers. This can be partly explained by the convergence of some of these roles, due to the increasing importance of digital marketing as a standalone function, with teams being built drawing on product, marketing and digital development expertise, and the consequent rise of marketing to sit at the top table along with IT. Companies who wish to rise to or stay at the top of their game must ensure they have a robust, effective digital strategy, and hire accordingly, ensuring they have the right skills in place to support the move to an online, especially mobile, marketplace. Those looking to retain top IT executives should keep in mind the main reasons these high performers leave their roles. The top four of these being lack of career development opportunities (28%), poor culture (26%) and new challenges/more interesting work (26%). The Global Attract survey also showed the benefits IT executives value most highly to be over 20 days holiday, an annual bonus scheme and flexible work options. The IT executive market remains moderately mobile with 54% of respondents planning on changing jobs in the next 12 months.
