Most spiders caught their prey in webs. There were many legends and stories about spiders. They had hard external skeletons and no wings. They were not insects but arachnids. The verbs used are: Rewrite the information in the present tense. Now add two sentences of your own, giving more information about spiders. Write in the present tense. 5

3 LEAFLET 1 BUG MULDOON AND THE GARDEN OF FEAR Imagine you are in a garden. Think of all the insects you might fi nd there and what you know about them already. Sort them into two groups. Goodies eg, ladybirds It s a bug s life Baddies eg, slugs Choose one of each type and describe it in more detail. These ideas might help you: Give your bug a name (eg, Letitia the Ladybird/Silas Slug): Where would they live? (eg, in the flower borders/under a pile of leaves): List some of their features (nouns to identify them eg, spots/ antennae): List adjectives to describe what they look like (eg, colourful/slippery): List verbs to explain the way they move (eg, scurry/slither): Add some adverbs to describe the verbs (eg, busily/slowly): What sort of voice would they have? (eg, high-pitched and female/ deep and male): What do you think their personality might be? (eg, timid and anxious/grumpy and rude): Add any other information about them eg, Would they be popular? What problems might they have? Would they have a family? Draw a labelled sketch of your bug on the back of the sheet. 14

Use a thesaurus to fi nd expressive verbs and powerful adjectives for your description. (Continue on the back of the sheet if necessary.) 8 RECIPE FOR SNARGLEFOOT PIE POSTER 3 Bubble doubles! There are many two-syllable words that end in le. Lots of these have a double consonant words like bubble, apple, little and so on. Use the bubbles below to collect as many double consonant le words as you can, by fi nding words with the same vowel sound as those in the bubbles. hobble little bubble apple nettle Using a different coloured pen, add some made-up words to your bubbles to use in a nonsense recipe.
