1 Dr. T.C. Chang is an Associate Professor in Geography at the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, National University of Singapore. He is also Vice Dean of the faculty in charge of Student Life. He received his PhD from McGill University, Canada, in His research interests include Southeast Asian tourism, arts and culture, and the challenges of urban re-development and gentrification. He is the co-editor of 'Interconnected Worlds. Tourism in Southeast Asia' (Elsevier, 2001) and 'Asia On Tour. Exploring the Rise in Asian Tourism' (Routledge, 2009). He has served as a historical consultant for the Singapore Tourism Board in its redevelopment of the Singapore River in the late 1990s, and more recently as a Task Force member for the tourism board's Tourism Compass 2020 vision plan. His current research focuses on historic boutique hotels in Singapore. Dato Seri Idris Bin Jusoh is presently the Chairman of MARA. He is also the State Assemblyman for Jerteh in Besut, Terengganu since Prior to his present appointments, he was the former Menteri Besar of Terengganu ( ), and a former Deputy Minister of Entrepreneur Development ( ). Dato Seri Idris was responsible in driving the transformation agenda of Terengganu s socio-economic development during his remarkable, albeit short, tenure as Menteri Besar. Among his notable achievements include the building of the Islamic Civilization Park (TTI), the International Training Center (ITC) and the Knowledge Park. Dato Seri Idris has a deep interest in education and educational reform, having introduced several new initiatives. He is a Founder of the IMTIAZ Schools concept, the Elite and Premier Schools concept, the Ulul albab Program and the English Teaching Assistants (ETA) Program. A strong advocate of innovation and creativity, Dato Seri Idris created the Terengganu Mind Center (MINDCET) which was formed to drive mindset change. Dato Seri Idris holds an MBA (Finance) from University of New Haven, USA and a Degree in Social Science (Economics and Management) from USM. He has attended the Advanced Management Programs (AMP) in Harvard (2001) and INSEAD, France (2008) and the Leadership in Development Program also in Harvard (2009).

2 Professor Mohammad Hashim Kamali is a Founding Chairman and CEO of the International Institute of Advanced Islamic Studies, Malaysia. He s also a Senior Fellow at the Institute of Strategic and International Studies (ISIS) Malaysia, a Senior Fellow of the Academy of Sciences of Afghanistan and a Senior Fellow of the Royal Academy of Jordan. He has given presentations at over 130 national and international conferences, published 20 books and over 120 academic articles. He graduated from Kabul University in Afghanistan with 1st Class Honours in Law and Political Science (1965), and served as Public Prosecutor with the Afghan Ministry of Justice for two years. He completed his LLM in Comparative Law, and Ph.D in Islamic and Middle Eastern Law, at the University of London ( ); following which he was employed as a broadcasting support staff by the BBC in Reading, UK ( ). Dr. Kamali was Assistant Professor at the Institute of Islamic Studies, McGill University in Montreal ( ); and a Research Associate with the Canada Council for Social Science and Humanities ( ). He has been a Visiting Professor at Capital University, Ohio (1991), as well as Visiting Professor at the Institute for Advanced Study in Berlin, Germany ( ). Regularly featured in print media, radio, TV and the internet he published an Open Letter and a full page article in the newspaper Berliner Zeitung just before the Taliban blew up the Bamian Statues, and appeared on the Iranian Republic s Television network just before the U.S. invasion of Afghanistan. He was twice awarded IIUM s Isma il al-faruqi Award for Academic Excellence in 1995 & His books Principles of Islamic Jurisprudence, Freedom of Expression in Islam, A Textbook of Hadith Studies, and Shari ah Law: An Introduction is standard text books in English speaking Universities worldwide. Professor Kamali s scholarly studies are translated into Bahasa Indonesia, Farsi, Pashto, Dari, Arabic, Bengali, and Turkish; and he is listed in a number of leading international Who s Who. Prof. Dato Wira Dr. Jamil Bin Osman received his early education at Sekolah Kebangsaan Kepala Batas, Kedah for five years and followed by one year at the National School Garong Padang, Kota Baharu, Kelantan. In 1962, he has been selected as one of the best students throughout the state of Kelantan and received an offer to study at boarding school Dato Abdul Razak (SDAR), Tanjung Malim, Perak for six years. In 1969, he successfully entered the Institut Teknologi MARA (ITM) for statistics courses for four years and then was given Mardi scholarship to continue his studies on the same field in England for two years. Upon his returned from England he was assigned

3 as a Research Officer at MARDI, Serdang for one year, and subsequently assigned to be a lecturer for the seventh year at ITM. During this period, he was offered a scholarship by ITM to pursue a Masters Degree in 'Applied Statistics' at Western Michigan University, USA ( ). When the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) was established in 1983 he was offered to lecture there. He founded the Economic Kulliyyah IIUM, and has then been appointed as the Deputy Dean of the Economic Kulliyyah, IIUM ( ). He was offered a scholarship to pursue a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree in Management Economics at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), New York ( ). Upon his returned from the United States he was appointed as the first Chairman of the Economics Department. In 1989 he was appointed as the Dean of Admissions and Records Division for 10 years. He was appointed as Deputy Rector of IIUM (Academic) replacing the late Tan Sri Prof. Ahmad Ibrahim ( ). In July 2006, he was once again asked to take over as Dean of Economics and Management Kulliyyah, IIUM in helping the Kulliyyah to be one of the world excellent centers. In 2008, he was appointed as Rector of the University College Insaniah, Kedah. Prof. Dato Kadir Din has been involved in various activities since he started teaching at the Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia 33 years ago. As an elected member of the International Academy for the Study of Tourism (IAST Madrid) , he was involved with many organizations and has written various publications and received awards for his contributions. In 1994 he became the Director (Dean), at the Centre for General Studies at UKM and soon after was appointed the Founding Dean of the School of Tourism and Hospitality Management at Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM). Dr. Kadir was the Pro tem Chair for the Tourism Educators Association of Malaysia (TEAM) and shortly after TEAM was established he was appointed by the Ministry of Education as the Distinguished Tun Razak Chairholder at the Center for International Studies, Ohio University, from 2003 to As a Professor in Tourism Management he teaches at the UUM College of Arts and Sciences, where he is also the Chairman of the Hospitality, Tourism Research and Consultancy Group (HOTRAC). He has been writing on many fronts and currently is the editor for Annals of Tourism Research (Elsevier), Tourism Culture & Communication (Melbourne), ASEAN Journal of Hospitality and Tourism (Bandung), and is the Editor-in-Chief of the Malaysian Management Journal. He is also a member of the Board Of Directors of Islamic Tourism Centre at the Ministry of Tourism.

4 Imtiaz Muqbil is one of the longest serving travel-trade journalists in Asia Pacific. Born in February 1956 in Mumbai, India, he studied at St Peter s High, a boarding school in the scenic Indian hill-station of Panchgani. He holds a Diploma from the London School of Journalism. He started his career in Kuwait with local English-language newspapers Kuwait Times, Arab Times and Daily News. Simultaneously, did freelance work as a stringer for Middle East Economic Digest, Reuters, Newsweek, McGraw- Hill World News, and PetroMoney Report (a Financial Times newsletter). Moved to Bangkok in November 1978, and joined the Bangkok Post, Thailand s leading English-language daily, as a sub-editor/writer. Began stringing for Travel Trade Gazette Asia in 1980 and joined full-time in Has covered the Asia-Pacific travel & tourism industry full-time since 1981, watching it go through numerous ups and downs from its fledgling start-up days to the giant it is today. Worked as Thailand Bureau Chief and Chief Correspondent, TTG Asia, PATA Travel News and associated publications ( ) and has covered dozens of global travel trade shows for the travel and tourism industry across the region. He is also fluent in English, Urdu and Hindi and able to converse in Thai and some Arabic. Professor Dr. Datuk Osman Bakar is now Emeritus Professor of Philosophy at the University of Malaya in Kuala Lumpur, and Deputy CEO of the International Institute of Advanced Islamic Studies Malaysia. He is currently a Senior Fellow at the Prince al-waleed Center for Muslim-Christian Understanding at Georgetown University, Washington D.C.; Senior Research Fellow at the Center for Civilisational Dialogue in the University of Malaya; and Visiting Research Fellow at Doshisha University in Kyoto, Japan. He served as the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic and Research) at the University of Malaya ( ); Professor at the International Institute of Islamic Thought and Civilization (ISTAC) International Islamic University Malaysia ( ); holder of the Malaysia Chair of Islam in Southeast Asia at Georgetown University ( ); and was a Fullbright Visiting Scholar at Harvard University (1992). Professor Bakar founded the Center for Civilisational Dialogue in 1996 at the University of Malaya. He has served as advisor and consultant to a variety of international academic and professional organisations and institutions, including UNESCO and The Qatar Foundation. He is a member of the C-100 (Council of 100 Leaders) of

He is the principal founder of the Malaysian Islamic Academy of Science established in 1977, and was its first Secretary-General ( ) and its President ( ). In 2001 he was appointed a member of the Religion Working Group on Genetically Modified Food at University of Pennsylvania s Center for Bioethics. He has published 15 books and over 250 articles on Islamic thought and civilisation, particularly on Islamic philosophy and science, as well as on contemporary Islam, and inter-religious and inter-civilisational dialogue. His best known works are Tawhid and Science (1991) (published in United Kingdom under the title The History and Philosopy of Islamic Science (1989)), Classification of Knowledge in Islam (1992), Critique of Evolutionary Theory, ed. (1987), and Islam and Civilizational Dialogue (1997). His Tawhid and Science has been translated into a number of Muslim languages including Persian, Turkish, Indonesian, and Albanian; while several other writings are translated into Spanish, Chinese, Urdu, Arabic, and Bosnian. Dr. Marzuki Usman graduated from Gadjah Mada University, Faculty of Economics, majoring in Money and Banking in He continued his education to earn Master of Arts in Economics from Duke University, Durham, North Carolina, USA (1975). He became the chairman of Indonesian Association of Economist, Jakarta branch ( ), the chairman of Indonesian Association of Economist, Nation Wide ( ). In 1993 he was appointed to be the chairman of Negotiation Delegate in Trade, Investment, Finance and Industry in Geneva, Switzerland. He was also appointed to be a member of House of Representative as the chairman of Independent Faction ( ). Dr. Ala Al-Hamarneh is born in Amman, Jordan. He holds MA and PhD degrees in economic and social geography. Since 1996 he is affiliated as senior researcher and director of research with the Centre for Research on the Arab World (CERAW), at the Johannes Guttenberg Mainz University in Germany. He is assistant professor in human geography in the same university. He teaches classes on geography of migration, geography of tourism and social urban geography. To his area focus of research belong the Arab and Muslim Worlds, Germany, Balkan and Russia. Issues of international migration, Muslim and Arab communities in Europa, globalization of higher education and neoliberal urban developments are in the center of his research activities. Dr. Al-Hamarneh was one of the pioneer researchers working on the concepts and possibilities of Islamic tourism. Economic and cultural aspects of tourism and the chances of South-South tourism activities as well as the impacts of 9/11 on tourism development have been major fields in his research in the last decade. Beyond the academic work, he has been advocating the case of Islamic tourism publicly in mass media and at various social and economic forums. His last co-edited volume Islam and Muslims in Germany (Brill, 2008) has been named the Title of the Year 2008 by Choice magazine in the USA. He is currently working on postmodern urban geographies and neoliberal urban planning and development in Arab

7 Dato' (Dr.) Haji Mustapha Ma is among the well-known Malaysian Chinese-Muslims. He is the president of the Chinese Muslim Association (MACMA - Persatuan Cina Muslim Malaysia). He received his early education at Nie Jiaah Muslim Primary School in Beijing China. He has also attended the Gezira Preparatory School Zamalek, Cairo Egypt from and subsequently at the St. Francis Xavier s College, Shanghai in He started his career as a teacher in Sultan Abdul Hamid Primary School Alor Star and later teaches at Sultan Abdul Hamid College, Alor Star ( ) and assumed the position of Assistant Inspector of Chinese Schools Johor ( ). He was the first and only batch of Teacher Graduates from Malayan Teachers Training College, Kota Bharu, Kelantan. He opted for early retirement from teaching in He joined the Rotary Club as a member (1962) and served as Sergeant-at-arms, and Director of Vocational Service. When he served as Education Attache at the Malaysian High Commission in London, UK, he became a member of the Rotary Club of St. Marylebone, London ( ). He also served at various NGOs ie Pemadam, IFNGO, PERKIM, IBAYATIM and many others. Assoc. Professor Dr. Ma Zhan Ming obtained a Diploma from Ningxia s Islamic Institute. Later, he studied in Medina Islamic University, Saudi Arabia where he obtained a Bachelor degree in Shari ah studies. He continued with his postgraduate studies at the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) in 2003 where he obtained his M.A. in Shari ah studies in 2006 and then proceeded to undertake his doctoral study at the International Institute of Islamic Thought and Civilization (ISTAC), a postgraduate school of IIUM, and obtained Doctoral degree in He had taken part in the editing of The Comprehensive Dictionary of Hui Nationality in China published by the Shanghai Publishing House (1992); he also published several articles in Chinese magazines in the last fifteen years, and one article in each of KATHA, the journal of dialogue of Civilization (Vol. 4, 2008), UM; Al-Tajdeed (2009) and Islam in Asia (2011), IIUM. Since fifteen years he is writing a brief interpretation of Quran in Chinese Language which is being continually published in Ningxia Muslim, a journal of Ningxia Muslim Association. Now he is working as an associate professor in the school of Foreign Languages and Cultures of Ningxia University.

He graduated from School of Tourism and Hotel Management in Mersin, Turkey with a bachelor s degree in He won a government scholarship from Turkish government to pursue graduate education in the United States in He completed his masters education at the University of South Carolina in Columbia, The United States of America. He joined doctoral program in Pennslvania State University in the same country. In 2002, he completed his doctoral education in Hotel, Restaurant and Recreation Management. In 2004, he was appointed as an assistant professor and school director for the School of Tourism and Hotel Management at Gaziosmanpaşa University, Tokat, Turkey. He was given associate professorship title in Marketing Management by Turkish Higher Education Council in Currently, he works as a deputy rector at International Burch University, Bosnia and Herzegovina. Teoman Duman has published research articles on consumer behavior in tourism in Tourism Management, International Journal of Tourism Research, Anatolia: An International Journal of Tourism and Hospitality Research and other respected hospitality and tourism journals. Abd Azis Abd Majid is an Assoc. Professor and Dean of the Faculty of Hotel and Tourism Management, Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM), Malaysia. He holds a BBA in Travel Industry Management from the University of Hawaii at Manoa and an MA in Travel and Tourism from the George Washington University, USA. Assoc. Prof. Azis is actively involved in various tourism-related organizations in Malaysia, namely: (1) PATA Malaysia Chapter as an Executive Committee from , (2) Founding Member and Vice-President of Malaysia Sports Tourism Council, (3) Founding Member of International Tourism Studies Association (ITSA), (4) Panel Member for the Accreditation of Tourism Studies, Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA), (5) Member of Space Tourism Society Malaysia Chapter and an Advisory Council member of Penang National Park. He is actively involved in consultancy and research work for various government agencies. His research interests are in Tourist Behaviour, Sustainable Tourism, Sports Tourism, Space Tourism and Travel and Tourism Management.
