Reducing Carbon Footprint Finding financial options Mr. Adnan Dato' Dr Mahmood Merican Executive Director, MGIP Capital Sdn Bhd Mr. Adnan is the Founder and Executive Director of MGIP Capital Sdn. Bhd. (MGIP Capital), the first exclusively Green or sustainable private equity management firm in Malaysia. MGIP stands for MY Green Initiative Project, its mission is to mainstream investments in the Green Economy. MGIP Capital has Securities Commision (SC) registration approval to manage private equities investment and establish its own Green Development Fund called Malaysia Green Fund Series 1 (MGF1). MGIP Capital business activities are in: 1. Sustainable private equity investment management; 2. Green financing advisor; and 3. Green event organizer. Adnan was previously attached as Tech Funding Advisor of a venture capital company, emphasizing ICT-based companies. Prior to that, he worked as Vice President in the Corporate Dealing Team of K&N Kenanga Berhad, where his responsibilities included managing the dealing team and marketing of listed equities to domestic and international institutional clients. Prior to that he was attached to the Corporate Finance Division as well as the Equities Research Division of the Arab-Malaysian Group. Adnan holds a Bachelor of Electrical Engineering degree majoring in Software Development from the University of New South Wales, Sydney, Australia. He also holds a Master of Business Administration majoring in Banking and Finance from the University College of Dublin, Ireland and a Certificate of Entrepreneurial Management from the University of Southern Australia. Adnan was one of the invited speakers at the inaugural International Green Exhibition Malaysia (IGEM 2010) organized by the Ministry of Green Technology, Energy and Water. Additionally, he is an external advisor to the Sustainability Cluster of the University Malaya and a CleanTech committee member of the EU-Malaysia Chamber of Commerce.

Fine Tuning Measurable for Township Masterplanning Dr. Thomas Tang Sek Khuen Director of Corporate Sustainability & Initiatives AECOM Asia Co Ltd, Hong Kong Dr. Thomas Tang is currently the Director for Corporate Sustainability, AECOM Asia, part of AECOM (NYSE: ACM), a global provider of professional planning, design and engineering services to transportation, facilities, environmental and energy markets. His role involves directing AECOM s sustainability and CSR initiatives in the Asia region and reducing the company s operational carbon footprint. Dr. Tang has written a number of reports and articles on sustainability and the environment and he is a regular speaker at international conferences. He has also been interviewed for his views on regional topics by Bloomberg and Al-Jazeera television networks. He has particular interests in green technologies and how to design low carbon communities of the future. 3. Low Carbon Town Planning Public Participation Stakeholder Engagement in Humanizing Low Carbon Town Planning Ms. Ratna Devi Nadarajan Secretary General Forum Air Malaysia (FAM) Ms. Ratna Devi is currently the Chief Executive Officer / Secretary of Standards Users and the Secretary General of FORUM AIR MALAYISA (FAM). She graduated from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia with a degree in Food Science and with a Masters in Environment Science from Universiti Putra Malaysia. She had served in the manufacturing industry and as a quality and environment management consultant for 9 years and now serves the interest of consumer stakeholders in a non government organization for the last 6 years. Her work involves advocating consumers right to safe products and services and promoting sustainable development component of production and consumption (SCP). Equally important is assisting in ensuring that social responsibility principles of accountability and transparency are put into operation among industry and other stakeholders in achieving goals of sustainable development.

The Story Behind Malaysia s First LEED Certified Condominium Dato Beh Huck Lee Managing Director Eupe Corporation Berhad Dato Beh is the Group Managing Director of Eupe Corporation Berhad, a property development company with arms in civil engineering and construction, hotel and golf course management, as well as property investment. The Group specializes in township development and has developed over 20,000 units of property in the state of Kedah. Having pioneered much of the growth in the state, it also owns and manages Cinta Sayang Resort, Cinta Sayang Hotel, the Carnivall water park and recently completed Sky Residences, the first LEED certified building in Malaysia and the North s only condominium within a golf course. Dato Beh Holds a Bachelor of Commerce and a Bachelor of Engineering (First Class Honours) from the University of Western Australia. He joined the Group in Taking over at the helm, he oversaw the operations of the Group, its restructuring and the subsequent listing of the Company on the Kuala Lumpur Stock Exchange (now known as Bursa Malaysia Securities Bhd). A Brief The Story Behind Malaysia s First LEED Certified Condominium Green buildings seem to be the hot topic of new condominium developments, but what are the practical issues that arise when looking to incorporate these features? To certify or not to certify? Which then begs the question which certification body does one use? What is the process of getting a building certified and how long will this take? And a key consideration for developers what is the cost involved, and will the returns justify this? From a buyer s perspective, how does a green building benefit them? And what are the costs involved? This is a developer s perspective on addressing these practical issues, and a developer s thoughts and experiences in getting a building certified.

Government Plans & Expectations of Green Development Puan Punitha Silivarajoo Principal Assistant Secretary, Green Technology Sector Ministry of Energy, Green Technology and Water Puan Punitha Silivarajoo is the Principal Assistant Secretary of the Green Technology Sector, Ministry of Energy Green Technology and Water. She joined the Ministry in 2009, not long after the new sector was set up. She has a Bachelors Degree in Industrial Organizational Psychology from UKM, A Bachelors Degree in Law from UM, a Certificate in Legal Practices (CLP) and a Masters Degree in Industrial Organizational Psychology from the University of New Haven, USA. Punitha is currently in charge of the development wing of the Green Technology Sector which covers areas like Low Carbon Townships, Eco Labeling and Public procurement programme, Human Capital Development particularly the development of green jobs, green ICT and climate change. She is also personally involved in the development of the Low Carbon Green Growth Act for Malaysia. Currently she is a task force member in the APEC Low Carbon Model Town (LCMT) Project coordinated by the Asia Pacific Energy Research Center. 4. Botanical Values Of Ecological Township Dr. Francis S.P. Ng Ex-Deputy Director General of FRIM Ex-Chief of Forestry Research in FAO of the UN Dr. Francis SP Ng is a graduate of the universities of Tasmania (BSc Hons, 1964) and Oxford (DPhil, 1971). He joined the Forest Research Institute as Forest Botanist in 1964 and left in 1990 when he was Deputy Director-General. During that time he was co-leader of the team that completed the first full modern inventory and description of the trees of Peninsular Malaysia, totally 2830 species, published in four volumes. After 1990, he served as Chief of FAO s service for forestry research, education and training, and later as Director of the Research Support Division in CIFOR (Center for International Forestry Research). He is now consultant to various corporations on forestry, landscape and garden projects and Advisor to the Ministry of Tourism Malaysia for Parks and Gardens.

5 5. Green Building Index Compliance How hard, or easy, is it? Ir. Chen Thiam Leong Member of GBI Accreditation Panel Ir. Chen Thiam Leong Distinguished Lecturer & Fellow of the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE), Fellow of the Institution of Fire Engineers UK, Fellow of the Institution of Engineers Malaysia, Professional Engineer, Chartered Engineer, GBI Accreditation Panel Member. Chen has over 30 years experience in the Building Services Industry. He has authored and co-authored numerous publications including the Malaysian Standard on Energy Efficiency & Renewal Energy and the National Energy Efficiency Master Plan study. Chen is a regular lecturer and trainer on the local scene and as an ASHRAE DL, he lectures on Energy Efficiency and Sustainability globally. In 2008, Chen led the PAM/ACEM initiative to develop the Green Building Index (GBI) rating system for Non-Residential buildings. He is currently leading the development of GBI tools for other categories of buildings. He is a Past President of ACEM, IFEM, MASHRAE and the Kiwanis Down Syndrome Foundation; and is also the Advisor to MACRA. In recognition of his contribution to the engineering fraternity, he was conferred the ACEM Gold Medal Award 2010.

6 Day Two 1. Retrofitting Building For Low Energy A Case Study Ar. Serina Hijjas Director Hijjas Kasturi Associates Sdn Bhd Ar. Serina Hijjas is the Director of Hijjas Kasturi Associates Sdn with over 18 years of experience in the field of architectural design. Graduated from Bartlett School of Architecture and University of Sydney with a three year working stint with Foster & Partners. Ar. Serina Hijjas have been active in the area of Energy Efficiency and Sustainability since her formative years in architectural practice. Awardees of three Asean Energy Efficiency Awards: the 55 storey Telekom Malaysia Headquarters Building (2005); First Runner-Up Securities Commission HQ (2003) and First Runner-Up Putrajaya International Convention Centre (2007). Currently the firm is working on the first LEED gold accredited office tower under construction in Kuala Lumpur at KL Sentral. Serina is a founding member of Green Building Index Technical Committee and an accredited professional in the arena of green building, has long advocated for energy efficient buildings and a greater move into sustainable design. The committee was also tasked to study and compare the green building standards in the region. Serina was on the first Standards and Industrial Research Institute of Malaysia (SIRIM) Working Committee for the Malaysian standards on energy efficiency, and later the development of the Green Building Rating tools. Serina is currently a contributor to the development of a Tropical Green Township Tool for Malaysia.
