Getting Started Installation Begin installation by going to in your web browser (preferably Firefox). If you want to log in using Blackboard, which is the recommended method of UO faculty, then choose the dropdown option UO Blackboard, then click Log in.
2 When you are logged into Panopto you will see a list of available tabs on the left hand side of the page: The descriptions of the tabs are as follows:
3 All sessions tab: This lists all of the current videos from everyone in active use who have their folder set to public that have been produced at the University Of Oregon. Scheduled tab: This tab is available for users who wish to schedule a time for a video to be made. For example if you are an instructor wanting to schedule lectures back to back, having a time set up is beneficial. Bookmark tab: This tab is available for instructors to keep track of which videos they would like to keep at hand for easy viewing access. All folders tab: This tab is a list of all classes that use Panopto, separated into their respective folders. These will be folders that are public to view from other people s classes, in addition to your own list of folders for your classes. Click the Record button at the top right. It will bring up a window asking you to download the Panopto Focus Recorder. Click the button for OSX, where it will ask you to download a.pkg file.
4 Locate the file (usually in the Downloads folder, unless you ve specified a different destination for downloads) and double click on it. You will be walked through a typical installation routine which will install the recorder to the Applications folder (you may need to enter an Adminstrator password). Double click on the Panopto Recorder application icon in the Applications folder. Log In The first time you open Panopto you will be greeted with a blank list of recordings. These are all the recordings you have created and are stored on your computer, regardless of if they re deleted on Blackboard or not. Click the Log in button at the top right corner of the application.
5 You will be greeted with a log in menu, with the providers initially set to Panopto. Click on the providers drop down menu and choose Blackboard; you should see something similar to this
6 Input your Blackboard user credentials (DuckID without ) and click Login under the form. Recording Check your preferences No webcam is needed for Panopto, as it can still record audio, screenshots and presentation slides, but if you re using one it s important to make sure it s working prior to recording. You can check this by opening up the Photo Booth application from your application list. To check the sound Under the Apple menu, select System Preferences, and then click Sound
7 Under the Input tab make sure your internal microphone (or other microphone) is working by looking at the input level bars. Create New Recording At the top left of the application is the Create New Recording button. Clicking this will bring up the recording menu The recording menu is fairly straightforward.
8 Folder you may choose to put it in a folder, but selecting None (Record Offline) will make it easier to add individual recordings to multiple classes. Session You can name this whatever you like (you have the option to rename it before uploading to Blackboard) The next options allow you to choose what you record. They can all be recorded in parallel, and there are viewing options that allow you and your audience to view them in different configurations (watching the video separately from the slides, or going through the slides and forwarding the video appropriately). If you re using a webcam, this is where you would double check to make sure it s on and working, as shown by the Video Preview box. You can also pause the video and recording, and it will seamlessly pick up where you left off.
9 What happens when I stop recording the video? AKA How to choose a session and upload a recording: Depending on your settings, when you stop recording, you will likely be sent to a page that will ask you to choose a session so you can upload your video to UO s Panopto storage server:
10 As it says in the text box added to the image above, you can upload your video from here if it isn t set up for automatic upload. If you have trouble connecting to the server, you may need to reconnect by going through the log in process again or make sure you are connected to the Internet as this process uploads the movie to the Internet Panopto site where the videos are stored. Sharing Upload to Blackboard Once you hit the Stop Recording button, your recording will appear in the recordings list of the application. Selecting a recording will bring up the Recording Information dialogue on the lower left hand side of Panopto.
11 From here you can rename the session to something more meaningful to your students. Select the folder (course site) you want to upload this to, and hit Upload. Know that all recordings go into one folder for each course you have, so any further sorting of recordings within Blackboard is not necessary. The Recording Information box will show the progress of the upload and will indicate when it s completed. How can I view the video? Start by logging into Panopto in your web browser if you aren t already, by going to panopto.uoregon.edu, and follow the log in process described previously in this document:
12 Log in using Blackboard for most users. When you log in you will see a list of recent sessions: If you don t see your sessions or your folder there, find your folder on the left menu and click on it. Your uploaded document should be located in the folder you selected. Clicking on the video in the list of recordings brings up the viewing window:
13 From here, you (and your viewers) have two viewing options for the recording, designated by the Slides and Screen Capture tabs. The Slides tab allows the viewer to scroll through the PowerPoint slides separately from the video. The Screen Capture setting allows the viewer to view both the PowerPoint slides and the screen capture in sections; clicking on a section jumps the recorded video to that specific point in the lecture. Share Link in Blackboard How do I share my video with my students? To share your creations with your students, you will first need to enable the Panopto tool in your Blackboard course because it is disabled by default Enable Panopto Video Link in Blackboard To Enable: Go into your Blackboard course and on the left hand navigation pane of your course under your control panel, go to Customization and select Tool Availability (See Screenshots below). You will see a list of tools that can be enabled or disabled for your course. Find Panopto Course Tool Application as well as Panopto Video Link and check the box. This will enable the tool for use.
14 Upload into a content area You can upload the video as a separate piece of content in the Content Area of your choice. Within the same toolbar as Build Content, go to the Tools menu item and select Panopto Video Link.

16 In Select Panopto Folder (i.e. your course), find the course you uploaded the recording into. Under lecture, select the lecture that you saved it as, create a title and an optional description, and hit Submit. Setting the Panopto content area in Blackboard After you ve enabled the tool, you can set up a content area for your Panopto videos to be displayed to students. The way you do this depends on your course design and can be done many different ways. Some instructors may wish to use an already existing area on the left menu like Course Documents and just create a folder in there for their videos, whereas others might want a separate link to another course content area on their left menu taking the students only to the Panopto video lectures. You can repurpose one of the existing areas you aren t using that are created by default as well by simply renaming the left menu item. For example, many people don t use the Assignments menu item on the left that is created automatically, so you could select the edit arrow next to that name and choose rename and repurpose it for the Panopto lectures. In this example, we are going to just use Course Documents and pretend we have a folder ready to go for Panopto lectures. In Course Documents, click on the folder you ve created for the lectures and then inside the folder click on Tools and from the dropdown Panopto Video Link. Again, if that option is not there, that means you need to enable it using the procedure described previously.
17 Select the appropriate folder where the video is located from the drop down menu and do the same to select the lecture itself from the second drop down menu. Then give the lecture a name and description (description is optional, title is not) and click Submit. It will ask you if you want to insert it and press the OK link to continue. The video will be added to your folder ready for student viewing. If you have a list of videos already there, or other content in that area, it will be added to the very bottom so you may need to scroll to see the new addition. You can move it up higher by dragging and dropping it somewhere else to reorder it. If you d like to specify date and time restrictions so that the videos are not available to the students until later in the term, you can use the Advanced Adaptive Release feature to add a date/time restriction element. Editing How do I edit my video? Once you have captured the video you want to upload to blackboard, there may be minor adjustments you will want to make. After the initial video is captured and has finished processing go to the folders tab on the left hand side of the page and click on the course you wish to use. In the folder you should find your personal videos. When you have the video you wish to edit, do not click on, but hover over the video, and you will see over toward the right side of the video an icon (see below) that offers a few option s: Share: The share option allows you to have a choice of where or to whom you wish to share your video with. Settings: The settings option takes you to your settings where you can make changes in the settings, the folder, the video itself and sharing options. Edit: The edit option allows you to edit any current or previous videos you may have in your Panopto folder. Delete: The delete option allows you to delete previous/current videos that you wish to get rid of. If you don t see an Edit button (third button to the right), it is probably because your video is still processing and you haven t waited long enough. Once it appears, you can edit your video and make your adjustments accordingly.
18 To Edit, click on the edit button next to your video and you should be taken to the edit page. Using the menu on the left, you can make many different types of adjustments. **NOTE** Saving your content is important! The save button is located at the top right hand corner of the edit page.
