3 Page3 OBJECTIVE: Organised Electronic Waste Management is a fairly new category in our country compared to other developed parts of the world. Most manufacturers worldwide follow the rules and regulations laid down by the respective governments about sourcing e-products (Mobile, Computers, Peripherals and Consumer Durables). The process entails setting up a collection mechanism for reuse or disposal of the products in a compliant manner. Since it was unorganized and never practiced in our country earlier, there is little availability of resources which can easily scale up and match up to the global standards. In a recent government regulation, all OEMs (Original Equipment Manufacturers) of Mobile, Computers, Peripherals and Consumer Durables will have to adhere to EPR (Extended Producers Responsibility) norms, which requires them to set up a standardised and safe collection and disposal mechanism across towns which have a population of more than 5 lakhs. Naturally, it s an unnecessary cost for these companies. And the costs are huge as the benchmarks they follow across the world are fairly stringent and would require plenty of investments. Another important concern with E-Waste is data security (and deletion) so that each disposed product becomes incumbent data erased. The ruling comes into effect from May 1, 2012 and the producers would get around 2-3 months to put the processes in order.
