If you are working in a team, you can allocate different pages of your project to different team members, so that the project is created by the whole team simultaneously, each member working on their own specific area. A must have feature for any classroom! 2

Vector Drawing Tool Mediator 8 s integrated drawing program allows you to create high end graphics within your Mediator projects. While working in the Drawing tool, the Mediator page is grayed out in the background enabling you to see how your drawing fits on the page. When you return to Mediator, the drawing is inserted as an object on your Mediator page. Drawings can be exported as standard picture formats: EMF, SWF, PNG, JPG and BMP and can also be used outside of Mediator. Visual Effects Shadow Effect Allows you to add a shadow to text, pictures and other objects. You can adjust the properties of the shadow (color, size, transparency etc.). 3

Glow Effect Allows you to put a transparent glow around objects. You can adjust the glow features in the Properties dialog (color, size, x- and y-adjustment etc.) Opacity / Transparency Increase the transparency of an object from 0-100%. Select the object you would like to add transparency to, open the Properties dialog, and enter the opacity value. These features empower users to add Photoshop-like effects instantly to make presentations look more professional and attractive. Master Pages This tool allows you to use the design of a page as a template for other pages. An ideal feature to handle the design of interfaces, logos and corporate identities that must appear in the same place on every page and have the same functionality. Mediator supports several Master Pages, which means you can have a Master Page for each section. Furthermore, Mediator Pro offers both Top and Bottom Master Page. The Top Master Page can be used for menus and other elements that must always appear on the top layer of the presentation and the Bottom one for backgrounds pictures. Master Pages are particularly useful for large projects with many pages sharing identical characteristics. You only need to create a single Master Page once with the company logo, an exit button and so on. If the logo (or anything else on the Master Page) needs to be updated at a later date, all you have to do is to edit the Master Page, and the whole document is updated automatically. 4

Design Tools Rotation You can rotate all objects on the page, even videos! Either use the mouse to grab one end of the object or select the number of degrees you wish the object to be rotated. Headline Create text objects where the text size adapts to the frame size. If you increase the size of the object the text size increases automatically. 360º Picture Scrolling With large pictures such as maps or "stitched" pictures from digital cameras, Mediator can add scrollbars and/or a mouse drag function to pan around the picture. You can even attach other objects such as videos and hotspots that will move with the picture. Ideal for use with digital cameras which allow you to stitch photos together. Hotspots Hotspots are transparent, interactive areas on pictures or videos. Once you have defined the area (i.e. the hotspot), you can make Mediator react to the mouse event whenever the mouse is moved into this area. 5

Custom Shape Window Your presentations no longer need to be rectangular! The Custom Shape function allows you to create presentations in all kinds of shapes. To change the shape of your project, you apply to it a black & white picture that defines the areas where the project should be visible (white areas) or transparent (black areas). To give an example, the project below is shaped as a pair of binoculars. Use a mask to create the shape of your project. 6

Objects Grouping and Locking The Group command binds objects together so that you can treat them as a single unit. Grouping is particularly useful for protecting and maintaining connections and distances between objects. To fix an object in its current position, you can check the Lock option in its Properties dialog. Once an object is locked, you cannot select it using the Select tool. If for instance you have placed a picture, bump map or other object as background, and would like to select one or more objects placed on top of it, locking the background enables you to drag a rectangle around the top objects without accidentally selecting and moving the background. Guides Set guides on the Mediator workspace and move them as needed to help you position and align your objects. You can also lock the guides for precision work. Custom Program Toolbar Access up to 20 external user-defined programs and macros from within the Mediator workspace. Resize Document This lets you change the size of your Mediator presentation (for instance from 800 x 600 to a custom size). You can also choose to let Mediator rescale all the objects automatically. 7

Merge Documents The Mediator Pro built-in merge function makes it easy to join together two or more Mediator documents. This allows several people within a company to work on different parts of the same presentation or students to prepare individual presentations that will eventually be merged. Note that if you are working in a networked environment with access to shared folders, it might be easier to use Mediator's multi-user mode. This allows several users to work concurrently on the same project. Password You can add a password to your document. Mediator projects protected with a password can be viewed, but not edited unless you enter the proper password. Multimedia and Interactivity Audio CD Playback CD Audio lets you play back audio tracks from a CD. This action gives you the opportunity to play any high quality song or melody in your presentation. Complete Sound Control Adjust the output level and balance on any sound on music or videos. Set Property With the Set Property action you can modify object properties in runtime! You can change an object s colors, size, location and many other properties. You can even specify the duration of the change to obtain a smooth transition. Set Property is perfect for creating Mouse over effects using just one object. 8

Collision Control Objects that collide while moving (during an animation or end user drag & drop) can trigger an event. You can for example make a racing car explode when it hits a wall, play a sound when a ball bounces off the ground and so on. A great feature for interactive games and action packed multimedia presentations! End user Drag and Drop Your audience can drag and drop objects anywhere on the page in runtime mode. Combined with variables this feature gives you a wealth of possibilities for fun and interesting Mediator games. Create puzzles, games, and even complex CBT assignments. 9

Animation Effect With the Animation Effect action you can animate an object across the screen while splitting it up in small pieces, referred to below as "bricks". You can also animate single characters. Animation Path Angle When creating an animation you can now select to follow the animation path angle and have the object rotate during animation. This way you get more realistic animations when using cars, airplanes etc. 10

Start and End Length Property Use Set Property with the new Start and End Polygon properties to define which part of a line should be visible at runtime and when! This enables you to draw a line in the presentation (for instance to show a travel route or draw an object) that will be displayed in runtime. You can even change the start and end points of the line simultaneously to achieve a snake effect where the complete line moves. Mouse Transparency Set this property to prevent the object from reacting to mouse events. If the object covers another object, the mouse events will go "through" the first object as if it was not there. This also improves the performance of Flash projects, as the object does not need to be continuously monitored for mouse events. Printing Mediator Pro lets you print a screenshot of each page of the presentation as it looks in design mode. You can choose to print either directly to a printer or to a file. Printing to a file might be useful if you want to add comments or perhaps a logo before you print the presentation. This allows you to document a presentation you have created. 11

Advanced Programming Input Objects Input Objects let you take answers from the end users or give answers back to them (input and output). Each input field has a variable attached that holds a value. The value is displayed in the Input field. If-Then-Else Input/Output fields let you evaluate user input and make your presentation react to this input. You can also provide the user with answers to questions through these fields. All Input/ Output fields have a variable attached to them and by using "If-Then-Else" structures it is easy to program Mediator to evaluate responses. This is an excellent feature for creating CBT projects (Computer Based Training). 12

Variables Mediator makes everybody a programmer. With its visual programming interface Mediator takes the hassle out of variables and other programming features. You can create counters, store user names, and even make your own calculator. Assign Action By allowing you to change the value of variables, the Assign action makes their use much more powerful. You can for instance create a clock, insert a name previously stored in a sentence, change a Boolean variable, etc. 13

Loop and Break Actions The Loop action is used to repeat an action a certain number of times, determined by the Break action. Combine Loops with If-Then-Else by simple drag and drop to create a program for sorting or randomizing data. List Box Support List boxes are everywhere. All the lists that you see on the Internet or other programs are similar to Mediator List Boxes. List boxes present the user with a number of predefined choices, such as their favorite car: Ford, Chevy, Pontiac or their occupation: Marketing, Administration, Production. 14

Keyboard Actions Assign events and actions to any key on the keyboard. This lets you execute particular actions depending on the key pressed by the user. Message Box Action Mediator Pro allows you to display a standard Microsoft Message box as a result of a particular event, containing for instance a title, OK and Cancel buttons and an icon representing the type of message you are displaying. You can also use variables! Debug Window This tool enables you to track the actions that are being executed and to view their parameters while testing your presentation. It also displays all variables and their values. 15

System Variables and Functions Mediator etc.) are very helpful when you use Mediator's programming functions. They can give you information about the end user's computer, the time and date, location of specific folders and so on. You can also use many different functions in Mediator. There are mathematical and trigonometry functions as well as programming functions available. Running external programs Execute Program Open other programs via your Mediator user interface. This includes any.exe file. You can even provide a command line to make Mediator not only open the program but also open a specific file within that program. You can access files from different programs, such as Microsoft Word or Excel or even open a web site. Web Link This action allows you to set up web links simply by entering the URL in the Web Link dialog box. In Mediator Pro this feature can be used in multimedia projects as well as web site projects. 16

The action lets you open a new mail window in the end user's default program. You can pre define the address and the text even use a variable! 17

Active Document Show files from other applications as objects directly embedded into Mediator projects. View Microsoft PowerPoint, Word, Excel, Adobe Acrobat PDF files etc. without having to close your Mediator project. INI File Support The INI File action is ideal for developers of CBT or interactive games. It lets you store user input (name, age, score, progress in program and so on) in a temporary file, and re-use it later. You can save a game, create a password, etc. 18

Report Action Using the Report action you can export values from Mediator variables to.wri or.txt files. Useful for order forms and information fax sheets. Create Log Files Track where the user has been in your Mediator project and for how long. This information is saved in a.txt file. Ideal for CBT projects. Open MD8 Document This action lets you open (switch to) other Mediator documents. If the documents have the same layout the jump from one document to another is practically unnoticeable. 19

PowerPoint Import Mediator imports Microsoft PowerPoint slides as background pictures. A separate Mediator page is created for each slide of your PowerPoint presentation. File Actions Mediator enables you to read and write text files at runtime. Use this to save information such as scores, user information and so on. Enhanced Web Features HTML and Flash Programming With the Pro version you can use many advanced features even when exporting to HTML or Flash. Variables, Input objects, If-Then-Else structures and Assign and Set Property actions allow you to make use of programming techniques in your web presentations to obtain sophisticated effects and complex interaction. In this way you can create professional WBT (Web Based Training) or other online presentations capable of reacting to the user input/behavior. Note: With Mediator Exp you can even save the user input, results and other data in an online database! See for further information about the Exp version. The Flash export also supports vector graphics created with the Mediator Pro Vector Drawing tool. Alt Tags Associate Alt tags with your pictures to enable access for people with various disabilities. If you intend to export your presentation to HTML and would like a description of the picture to appear to the user when he/she moves the mouse pointer over the picture on the HTML page, you can enter this description in the Notes tab of the Properties dialog of the picture. 20

Database Support This allows you to use Mediator as a front-end to ODBC databases such as Microsoft Access, Paradox, SQL etc. Mediator also allows you to use SQL commands. Mediator has the ability to show records and navigate back and forth between records. If you wish to search, sort or write to a database, this can be achieved with SQL commands. This is particularly useful if you want to access data from your Mediator presentation such as prices, sales figures, statistics etc. 21
