3 Animation for Bulleted/Numbered Lists Entrance Animation This type of animations specifies how the text is to first appear on the slide. 1. Click any bulleted item, but DO NOT highlight any of the text. 2. On the Animations tab, click the icon, located on the Animations ribbon. This will open a task pane at the right side of the screen. 3. Click the button, and then choose Entrance. 4. Choose one of the animations or click More Effects to get a list of 52 extra effects. 5. To see what an effect would look like on the slide, just click on one of the effects. 6. Double-click the chosen animation. The following will happen: a. The animation will activate so you can see it b. As illustrated below, the chosen animation will be listed in the task pane at the right side of the screen. It will have a green star and a mouse icon in front of it. Green stars represent entrance animations. c. Each item in the list will have a blue number in front of it to show its position in the animation order 7. Use the Start field (circled in the previous illustration) to specify whether the animation is to be begin manually or after a specified number of seconds after the previous animation. 8. Use the Direction and Speed fields (above the red arrow in the previous illustration) to further customize the animation that was just added. Page 1

4 Emphasis Animation This animation draws the readers attention to text that is already displayed on the slide. 1. Click anywhere inside the bulleted (or numbered) list placeholder. 2. On the Animations tab, click the icon, located on the Animations ribbon. This will open a task pane at the right side of the screen. 3. Click the button, and then choose Emphasis. 4. Choose one of the animations or click More Effects to get a list of 31 extra effects. 5. To see what an effect would look like on the slide, just click on one of the effects. 6. Double-click the chosen animation. The effect will be added to the task pane at the right side of the screen. It will be displayed with a yellow star. Exit Animation This type of animation specifies how the text is to look when it leaves the screen. 1. The directions to add Exit animation are the same as adding Entrance animation, except for step 3. For that step, click Exit instead of Entrance. Motion Paths A motion path allows you to specify a route that an object uses when leaving the slide. 1. Click the object to select it. 2. On the Animations tab, click the icon, located on the Animations ribbon. This will open a task pane at the right side of the screen. 3. Click the button, and then choose Motion Paths. 4. Choose a path: a. Click one of the predefined paths displayed in the menu b. Click More Motion Paths and then click one of the predefined paths c. Click Draw Custom Path and then choose what kind of path to use. Afterwards, use the mouse to draw the path and then double click the area where the path is to end. Page 2

5 Animation Order This option specifies the order in which animations occur. 1. Click anywhere inside the bulleted (or numbered) list placeholder. 2. On the Animations tab, click the icon, located on the Animations ribbon. This will open a task pane at the right side of the screen. 3. Click the animation to be moved in the order sequence. 4. At the bottom of the list of animations, click on of the arrows to move the animation in the list. PowerPoint will perform the animations in the list starting at the top. Changing the Animation Start Method You can start an animation from a mouse click, or automatically after a certain period of time. 1. Use the directions listed previously in this manual to add animation to the bulleted/numbered list. 2. If the animation task pane is not open at the right side of the screen: a. On the Animations tab, click the icon, located on the Animations ribbon. 3. As shown in the illustration below, click the drop-down arrow on the Start field and choose how the animation is to start. 6 Changing an Animation s Attributes After an animation has been added to the bulleted/numbered list, it can be easily changed to another animation. 1. Click anywhere inside the bulleted (or numbered) list placeholder. 2. On the Animations tab, click the icon, located on the Animations ribbon. This will open a task pane at the right side of the screen. 3. Click the desired animation. 4. Click the animation to be changed and use the drop-down arrow next to it to choose Effect Options. 5. Make any desired changes to the animation s attributes. For example, you make it display faster, or from a different direction. Removing an Animation 1. Click anywhere inside the bulleted (or numbered) list placeholder. 2. On the Animations tab, click the icon, located on the Animations ribbon. This will open a task pane at the right side of the screen. 3. Click the desired animation. 4. At the top of the list of animations, click the button. Page 4

7 ANIMATED CHARTS When adding a chart to a PowerPoint slide, it may be a good idea to animate the chart to help views visualize the data being charted. 1. On the Insert tab, click the Chart icon, located on the Illustrations ribbon. 2. Double-click one of the icons representing the type of desired chart. 3. In the Excel window, add the desired data to be charted. As you make changes, they will be reflected in the chart on the PowerPoint slide. Alternatively, data can be copied and pasted into the Excel worksheet that is opened. 4. Save the Excel worksheet if needed and then close it. 5. On the slide, resize the chart as needed. 6. On the Animations tab, click the icon, located on the Animations ribbon. 7. On the task pane at the right side of the screen, click the button and then click an Entrance animation. 8. Use the drop-down arrow on the animation that was just added to choose Timing. 9. On the Chart Animation tab, shown in the next illustration, use the drop-down arrow to choose By Series Run the presentation to see the effect of the animation. Page 5

8 TRANSITIONS Each time a new slide is displayed in a presentation, something called Slide Transition takes place. You can customize how you want the slides to animate when they appear in the presentation. 1. On the View tab, click the Slide Sorter icon, located on the Presentation Views ribbon. NOTE: Below each slide representation in the Slide Sorter view, will be the slide number. Also, if a transition or any text animation is present on the slide, a small white star will be displayed under the slide s left corner. To see what the animation is, just click on the white star. 2. Click the slide to which the transition is to be added. 3. On the Animations tab, use the arrows (illustrated below) to scroll through the list of transition icons, located on the Transition to this Slide ribbon. 4. Click on a transition to see what it does. 9 NOTE: The following illustration shows some customization options. 5. Once a transition has been added to a slide, use the ribbon to make any desired customizations: a. Transition Sound has a drop-down arrow to choose a sound effect b. Transition Speed slows or speeds up a transition s execution c. Advance Slide allows you to specify if you have to use the mouse to manually advance to the next slide or have the computer execute the transition automatically after a specified amount of time. 6. To remove a transition, just scroll to the top of the list of transitions and choose the very first one. 7. Repeat this process for each slide. NOTE: To quickly add the same transition to all slides, view them in Slide Sorter view and then use CTRL +A to select all slides. Then add a transition to any slide and it will add the same transition to all of the slides. Timed Transitions 1. Use the directions in the previous section to add a transition effect to a slide. 2. On the Animations tab, remove the checkmark in the On Mouse Click field and add a checkmark to the Automatically After field. Next specify how many seconds are to elapse before the transition is to occur. For example, in the illustration below, the slide will be visible for only six seconds before it changes to the next slide. Page 7

10 CREATING A KIOSK (CONTINUOUSLY-RUNNING PRESENTATION) You may want to have a computer continuously run a presentation that displays information automatically. Together with slide timings, you can prepare a presentation that runs continuously instead of quitting at the end. 1. Add timed transitions to each slide. 2. On the Slide Show tab, click the Setup Slide Show icon, located on the Set Up ribbon. 3. Place a checkmark in the Loop Continuously Until ESC box Run the presentation from the first slide. It will continually loop until the ESC key is pressed. Page 8
