Program Description The English for Health Care course is designed to help students develop general English skills with a focus on use of English in health related work environments. Founded on three core areas Integrated Skills, Study Skills, and Communication Skills, students will develop and refine strategies for improving comprehension as well as production. Students can expect to engage in various learning methods, including group activities, lectures, projects, individual class assignments and presentations. Students competencies will be assessed in the skill areas of listening, speaking, reading and writing on the scale of benchmarks set out by the Centre for Canadian Language Benchmarks. Structure of the Program The English for Health Care Program consists of 5 weeks of classroom studies. Classes are held onsite at our Vancouver campus where you will find inviting and technologically advanced classrooms, a computer resource centre, and a clinical practice lab for students pursuing health-related training programs. Our ESL learning specialists are highly qualified professionals able to support different adult learning styles and help each student to develop the English skills and competencies needed to succeed. With a low student-to-instructor ratio our students receive the attention needed to guarantee success. Students will enjoy free Wifi and have access to nearby cafes, shops, public library and transit. 1

2 Program Learning Outcomes Upon completion of this course the student will be able to display the following abilities at levels of English proficiency approaching Canadian Language Benchmark 6 in Reading and Writing, and Benchmark 7 in Listening and Speaking 1. Reading Participate in less routine social conversations for many everyday purposes Participate in routine phone calls Give extended warnings, suggestions, recommendations or advice Give instructions and directions for technical and non-technical tasks, procedures and processes Give detailed information; express and qualify opinions and feelings; express reservations, approval, disapproval, possibilities and probabilities one on one and in small group discussions or meetings Give presentations about moderately complex processes, to tell stories (including future scenarios), or to describe, compare and contrast in detail 2 events, jobs or procedures. [Presentations are up to about 10 minutes long; topics are familiar and concrete.]. Understand moderately complex social exchanges Understand communication intended to influence or persuade Understand descriptive or narrative monologues or presentations on generally familiar and relevant topics Understand moderately complex directions and instructions for technical or nontechnical tasks. [Instructions are about 10 to 12 steps with up to 15 details (fewer on the phone). Understand short group interactions and discussions on familiar topics Understand informal talks on general interest or occupation specific Understand moderately complex social messages (such as those conveying announcements, cancellations of arrangements and apologies) related to a personal experience or a familiar context Understand moderately complex instructions and instructional texts for multistep procedures related to everyday situations, where the sequence must be inferred. [Instructions are up to 10 steps, presented partially in point form or in a text of about 3 to 5 paragraphs; not always step by step; some visual clues may support comprehension.] Locate and use 2 or 3 pieces of information from moderately complex formatted texts (such as maps, course calendars, directories or website navigation menus) Get information from moderately complex business/service texts containing advice, requests or detailed specifications Understand moderately complex descriptive or narrative texts on familiar topics 2

Writing Interpret information contained in formatted texts (such as diagrams, tables, graphs or website navigation Convey personal messages in short, formal, and informal correspondence for an expanding range of everyday social purposes (such as expressing congratulations, thanks, apologies or offering assistance) Reduce a page of information to an outline or summary. [Topic is of personal relevance and may be related to a specialized field.] Write short business or service correspondence for routine purposes. [Writing is about 1 paragraph.] Program Evaluation Methods and Completion Credential. Students will be evaluated on a weekly basis using a formative assessment consisting of the following: Reading/writing tasks as set out by the Centre for Canadian Language Benchmarks guide at CLB 5&6 levels Interviews, discussion groups and role plays with assessment in accordance with CLB task descriptors and exemplars representing CLB 6&7 levels Listening tasks as set out by the Centre for Canadian Language Benchmarks guide at CLB 5&6 levels Students will be provided with a final program detailed summative report using CLB benchmarks to indicate skill levels in the areas of Speaking, Listening, Reading and Writing and issued a certificate of course completion. Admission Requirements for entrance to the English for Health Care program PART A: Applicants must meet the general admission requirements for entrance to Saint Elizabeth Health Career College; Be at least 18 years of age; Be able to legally study in Canada Proof of Grade 10 graduation or mature student status Proof of meeting English language competency requirements (please see detailed description below) 3

4 PART B: English Language Requirements for Entrance to Saint Elizabeth Health Career College (please note individual programs may have higher English Language Requirements) In accordance with Saint Elizabeth Health Career College, Language Proficiency Policy, Native and Non-Native speaker of English is defined as; a) Native speakers of English*: Are those who have been educated in an English-speaking environment (in Canada, outside of Quebec, or another country with an English language system/institution) for a minimum of seven (7) years. b) Non-native speakers of English: Are those who have not been educated in an English-speaking environment or who have been educated in Canada or in English-speaking environment for less than seven (7) years. * To achieve functional language proficiency and be termed as a native English speaker, one would require seven (7) years of education in an English-speaking environment (these years could be acquired in either a consecutive or non-consecutive manner). If, however, these years were all consecutive and inclusive of only secondary or post-secondary education in an English-speaking environment, the number of years to meet the native English speaker requirement could be achieved in a period of 4 years. Proof of completion of Grade 10 English; or 2. College courses determined to be equivalent to completion of Grade 10 English (or higher) by post-secondary institutions. Applicants must produce transcripts as evidence of completion. A minimum of a C grade is acceptable. 3. Canadian Adult Achievement Test (CAAT): 1. The Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) -- test must be within the last two years. IBT only: Overall score of 64 with no score lower than 17 in Speaking and Listening and no score lower than 15 in Reading and Writing. 2. International English Language Testing System (IELTS) Academic -- test must be within the last two years: Overall score of 5.5 with a minimum of 5.5 in Speaking and Listening and no score lower than 5.0 4

5 Reading Comprehension 35/50 Spelling 23/32 4. Language Placement Index (LPI): The three individual scores (Sentence Structure, English Usage, and Reading Comprehension) must total a minimum of 20, out of a maximum possible score of 40. Essay level of 4, with a minimum essay score of 24/40 5. Accuplacer: Grade 10 level or higher in Reading and Writing. 3. Canadian Language Benchmark Placement Test (CLB PT) -- test must be within the last six months: Listening 6, Speaking 6, Reading 5 and Writing Canadian English Language Proficiency Index Program (CELPIP): General Speaking-6 and Listening -6 and Reading-5 and Writing-5 5. Canadian Academic English Language Assessment (CAEL) Overall Score of 50, with no section less than Language Instruction for New Canadians (LINC) Report Cards are acceptable as evidence that required CLB levels have been met If the student fails to meet the minimum admission requirements, such requirements may not be waived by either Saint Elizabeth Health Career College or the student.
