1 SCHOOL OF ENGINEERING UNIVERSITY OF ST THOMAS ENGR 298 Roman Engineering and Art, 4 Cr J-Term 2017 This course is designed and taught within the following context: University of St Thomas Mission Inspired by Catholic intellectual tradition, the University of St. Thomas educates students to be morally responsible leaders who think critically, act wisely and work skillfully to advance the common good. Instructor Information (in alphabetical order) Dr. Deborah Besser, PE Loras 304B (preferred) Prof. John Walker Prof. Barbara Zell Catalog Course Description Modern is a living tribute to the contributions made by the engineers of Ancient and the Holy Roman Empire. Their legacies of art, architecture, public health innovations, design and construction techniques advanced the Roman rural society to an urban culture of well-defined principles and planning. The course will be conducted in, Naples and Florence where many of these examples still exist. On-site visits will be made in the above areas where discussions and observations can take place. Visits to 2 Italian universities for lectures will again be included; La Sapienza in and Frederico II in Naples. Academic research will be presented by their instructors with discussion and comments from our students. We will evaluate examples in today's society and use ancient and modern Roman and Italy as our backdrop for these discussions. Required Textbooks and Materials See BlackBoard for journal articles, videos, reference website/s, etc. Required Textbooks: Roman Engineering and Structures, John Walker, University of St Thomas Printing Saving Italy, Robert Edsel, W.W.
