Yeats s A Woman Young and Old is composed of quotations from George Herbert s The CollarJohn Donne s A Nocturnal upon S. Lucies day ; Being the shortest day and Sophocles s Antigone. The construction of quoting these poems and the drama indicates W. B. Yeats s intention of composing his work. As this titlea Woman Young and Old shows, the conflict between the two totally different things is the theme of the work. He tries to pursue the conflict and to find the solution of the conflict. He is interested in the metaphysical poets and the dramatist because they pick up the theme of the conflict and the order of the universe in their works. He imitates their thoughts about the order and the construction of time and space in their works. He constructs his own time and space to solve the conflict in his work. The difficult situation of Ireland after the independence from Britain is reflected in the theme of the conflict.
