4 2 Listen to Literature Preview Script Conduct a Picture Walk Use this script to help students access the overall idea of the story. The wives loved their husbands, but they missed their old homes. Many times, they said to the father of their husbands, We miss our villages. May we visit them? Every time, the old man answered, My sons and I need you. Stay with us another day. nce there was a man with four sons. The three older sons each had a wife. The man, his sons, and their wives lived in a beautiful home. 4 5 Pages 4 5 This father (point) lives with his four sons (point). Three of the sons have wives (point). 6 7 Pages 6 7 The wives are sad (frown). They want to visit their old homes. But the old man says no (shake head). The wives asked again and again. Finally, one day the old man said, You may leave. But you must bring me three gifts, or you cannot come back. You must bring me fire in paper, wind in paper, and music from paper. The wives were so happy. We will bring you everything! they said. And they left the house. On the road, the wives thought about the gifts. Oh, no! How can we bring back fire in paper, wind in paper, and music from paper? they cried. Father said before we left, I want three things from you. Bring me these, or don t come back! Oh, what will we do? Father told us when we left, Bring me all these things! Why did he give this puzzle to us? Oh, what will we bring? 8 Pages 8 9 Finally, the old man says yes. But he gives the wives a puzzle. They must bring three things or they can t come back Pages The wives sing about the puzzle. They are afraid. How will they solve it? The gifts were impossible! We will not be able to go back! cried the three wives. Just then, the wives saw a farm girl. She asked, What is wrong? The wives told her the problem. The happy wives thanked the girl. They thanked her again and again. They could go back to the father. They had three gifts for him. 12 Pages The wives meet a farm girl (point). She solves the puzzle! The wives are so happy Pages This is another song. The wives celebrate. They can go back to their husbands and the old man. 4 Hampton-Brown Skill Plan 14 page 4 of 7 Bring Me Three Gifts!

5 The wives hurried home. The first wife bowed and said, Father, here is fire in paper for you. She held up a large paper lantern. A small candle glowed inside it. The room filled with light, and the old man smiled. The second wife bowed. Father, here is wind in paper for you. She waved a beautiful paper fan. A cool wind filled the room, and the father laughed. The third wife bowed. Father, here is music from paper for you. She held up wind chimes. The second wife waved the fan at them. The breeze made the chimes ring. Music filled the room. The father clapped and laughed Pages The wives go home. One wife gives the old man a paper lantern (point) Pages The other wives give a fan (point) and wind chimes (point). All these gifts solve the old man s puzzle! The father was so happy. You are all very smart women. You make me proud! he said. Look at this lantern. See it glow. Wave this fan, and feel the breeze blow. Hold up these chimes, and hear them ring. Take all these gifts. Take them and sing! 22 Pages This song is about the lantern, the fan, and the chimes (point to each) Pages The wives tell the old man how the farm girl helped them. He sends his son to find the girl. The son found the farm girl and brought her back to the house. The young woman smiled. Then she said to the father, You are kind. But I am poor. I do not have anything for you. The father laughed. We do not need a gift from you! he said. You are smart and clever. That is enough for us. You are a clever girl, the old man told the farm girl. My son is clever, too. You could marry him and be part of our family! 28 Pages The son brings the farm girl home. The father likes her. 29 Pages The farm girl marries the son (point to the couple). Now there are four wives. Everyone is happy! 31 Hampton-Brown page 5 of 7 Bring Me Three Gifts!

Sheltering Strategies CD 4 Facial expression Illustrations and real objects Restatement Sound effects Explanation Definition Show how the three wives feel: sad, worried, happy, guilty, etc. Point to items in the art or show real examples as you say their names: lantern, fan, wind chimes, etc. After reading We miss our villages (page 6), say: We want to see our old homes and friends. When the third wife gives her gift (page 21), ring chimes. After reading You make me proud! (page 25), say: The father feels good about the three wives because they solved the puzzle. Explain (page 27): When you lie, you say something that is not true. Photo Credit: Elizabeth Garza Williams 6 Hampton-Brown Skill Plan 14 page 6 of 7 Bring Me Three Gifts!

7 2 Listen and Try Out Language Conduct an interactive reading of the folk tale. Pause after you read text containing object pronouns. Then involve students in using the focus language structures. For example: Page 6: Say It as an Echo Emphasize our villages as you read We miss our villages. Have students repeat with the same emphasis. Then emphasize them as you read May we visit them? Have students echo the question with the same emphasis. missed their old homes. Many times, they said to the father of their husbands, We miss our villages. May we visit them? Page 7: Say the Rest of It Read the page aloud, emphasizing the object pronoun in each sentence. Then reread the dialogue, pausing for students to supply you in sentence 1 and us in sentence 2. Every time, the old man answered, My sons and I need you. Stay with us another day. Hampton-Brown page 7 of 7 Bring Me Three Gifts!
