3 Conference Programme Schedule 10:20 Coffee and Networking Break 09:00 Breakfast, Coffee & Networking 09:40 09:50 Welcome from the Hosts Keynote Speech: Head of Player Care and Support 10:40 Panel session : Working with Families Often the closest and most important support network for a professional sports person is his or her family, in terms of emotional support and in some cases, in a professional capacity where family members act as agents. In this session, panelists will identify the best way families can support their sports playing relatives, and also how other key parties in a sports person s career, e.g. clubs and agents, should work with a star s family. Haydn Roberts is Head of Player Care and support at Manchester City Football Club. Haydn has developed the concept of Player Care at the club and has built the foundations to ensure a players well-being away from football is protected at all times. Manchester City s player care is unusually comprehensive, and sets the benchmark for attracting, inducting, and supporting new members of the squad throughout their time in Manchester. Haydn will offer a dedicated keynote presentation of how the department has supported more than 230 players and their respective families across the spectrum including, but not limited to, settling in the UK, driving lessons, education, visas and housing. Haydn Roberts (Manchester City FC) 10:05 Andrew Hussey Huw Jennings Martyn Heather Mel Stein 11:20 Head of Football Logistics, West Bromwich Albion FC Academy Director, Fulham FC Head of Education and Welfare, Premier League The Association of Football Agents One-to-One Interview: A Winning Mindset The former England Cricketer, Jeremy Snape has the combined experience of being a successful International cricketer and coach and providing innovative performance ideas for teams and leaders. He has the advantage of drawing on real life experiences from his playing and coaching career and which is underpinned by a Master s Degree in Sport Psychology. Jeremy will take to the stage to showcase some very successful corporate clients delivering team culture, leadership and executive coaching programmes. On the sporting front Jeremy has held roles as Performance Coach to the South African Cricket Team as well as to Shane Warne s victorious Rajasthan Royals in the Indian Premier League. Jeremy has rapidly become one of the most recognised names in sport psychology, offering key insights to national newspapers, Sky Sports and BBC Radio 5 Live. Jeremy Snape (former England cricketer; now sports psychologist Sporting Edge ) 11:35
4 11:50 12:40 Panel Session: Behaviour Management In any industry, an out-of-work misdemeanour can seriously damage the reputation of employee and employer, but when it happens with sportspeople, the media spotlight heightens the impact for both player and club. Not only, therefore, does the support network for a professional sportsperson work hard to minimise the negative impact of bad behaviour off the pitch, so too does it work hard to make sure it doesn t happen in the first place. In this session, panellists discuss what approaches work to ensure sportspeople are the role models off the pitch just as much as they are on it. JP O Reilly Mick Shea Dr Philip Cooper Simon Barker Kate Hays 12:30 Team Manager,Saracens Education Tutor,West Ham United FC Owner, State of Mind Assistant Chief Executive Officer,PFA Head of Physiology, English Institute of Sport Coffee and Networking Break 13:15 14:15 14:30 Lunch Keynote Speech: Team Administration Manager The English Premier League is the wealthiest and most exciting football league in the world. Its popularity has centred around its teams ability to attract the world s most talented footballers, who help create a sporting spectacle unrivalled in the sport, week in, week out. In this keynote presentation, Ray Haughan, Team Administration Manager from Liverpool FC will discuss his day-to-day role, which involves being the link between players and management staff, ensuring that the processes are in place off the pitch for a player to perform on it to their maximum ability. Ray has become a key facet of the club s on-going campaigns throughout the years. He will offer a fascinating insight of how the big club in the North West of England takes Player Care very seriously and is a key part of the club s mandate. Ray Haughan Team Administration Manager, Liverpool FC 12:55 One-to-One Interview: View from Former Professional The former ex-arsenal legend and Sky Pundit - Ray Parlour -will discuss his incredible journey from his first debut game against Liverpool in 1992 to the end of his career in Ray will also showcase how he overcame off-the-pitch challenges and how he managed with being in the spotlight such as when he scored that 30-yard goal against Chelsea in 2002 and then to go on and win the FA Cup with Arsenal FC. Ray Parlour Ex-Arsenal and Sky Pundit 14:45 Panel Session: Non-Football Perspective Football dominates the sporting conversation in the UK, but there is huge network of clubs, agents and other athlete support networks who work hard, day-to-day, to ensure a professional sportsperson s life off the pitch, track or court is as prosperous as it is on it. In this session, panellists from outside football will discuss what approaches to player and athlete care work well, what don t, and what the world of football can learn from best practice outside of it. Simon Bayliff Ian Thomas Ian Braid Damien Hopley Chief Executive Officer, Arete Management Personal Development Manager, The Players Cricket Assocition Chief Executive Officer, The British Athletes Commission Chief Executive Officer, Rugby Players Association
5 15:25 15:35 Panel Session: Supporting Non-Sporting Interests The career of a professional sports person is short, and often when they retire in their 30 s, sport is all they have ever known. Unfortunately, the what next scenario is all too common particularly when retirement is looming and which can then be too late. History is littered with examples of recently retired sportspeople who have suffered bankruptcy, depression and alcoholism. In this session, panelists discuss what support needs to be offered to professional sports people during their career financial, educational and vocational so that a plan is in place when their sporting career comes to an end. The Premier Sports Network in with association with: Mark Lowther Peter Fairchild Alan Sykes Karim Fatih, Senior Lecturer & Postgraduate Programme Director, Sport Leadership, Cardiff Metropolitan University Private Client Tax Partner,Smith and Williamson LLP Chief Executive, League Football Education CEO, A Better Perspective L A U N C H 16:15 16:25 Premier Sports Networking Session
