Emergency Relief Programs Our Emergency Relief Program is designed to provide assistance to individuals or families in personal distress, or who are victims of a physical disaster. In 2014, we provided emergency relief to victims of flooding in Buterere, Burundi, by supplying them with basics such as blankets, clothing, bedding, food and clean water, as well as by creating mitigation plans for affected crops and recouping losses. In 2016, our volunteers will provide relief to refugees fleeing Burundi s recent political violence, a conflict which forced tens of thousands of civilians to escape into neighboring countries. Our

efforts will concentrate on providing basics of life to Burundian refugees living in Camp Mahama, in Rwanda. With this project, we will be able to purchase and distribute food, soap, blankets, sanitary napkins, and other basic necessities. The camp is operated by the United Nations Refugee Agency and welcomes assistance from other groups, allowing for mobilization of additional resources to address challenging issues like hygiene and sanitary needs. The Mahama refugee camp is currently housing thousands of Burundian refugees, 75% of which are women and children. The site was allocated by the Government of Rwanda on 50 hectares of land in the Mahama sector of Kirehe District, and is able to host 20,000 people. Wings of Hope for Africa distributes emergency relief supplies to Buterere flooding victims

Self-Sufficiency and Education Programs We support vulnerable families by developing education and co-operative projects to generate income, foster community building, and strengthen traditional methods of selfsufficiency through agriculture, or income generating activities. With these programs, we create economic sustainability and growth, leading to reduced poverty while increasing quality of life. In 2013, Wings of Hope for Africa launched the Community Garden an agricultural project supporting dozens of families Buterere, Burundi. Over a two-year period, the project provided tools, seeds, and trained 30 families to grow crops.

Above: Wings of Hope for Africa Community Garden Project: education and strengthening of traditional methods for self-sufficiency through agriculture We continued the project, expanding to the community of Kivumu, Burundi, in This is an ongoing and sustainable program made possible by our purchase of a permanent site for the community garden, and training the families to pass a portion of the crop seeds to next participants. The Kivumu Community Garden launched in January 2016, and will support 70 families per year. Wings of Hope for Africa livestock donation project, The goats provide milk and nourishment, and are bred among participating families to multiply and sustain the benefit

In late 2015, we also began preparations to open an education center in Buterere, Bujumbura. With this project, our volunteer team in Burundi will teach participants basic literacy skills and run courses in income generation and self-sufficiency. We acquired sowing machines and other necessary materials for our first course, and plan to teach garment-making later in Our self-sufficiency and income generation education extends to manufacturing projects. Our brick making program runs from July to September each year, with the participants creating traditional bricks and selling them at the market to create income. So far we have helped 20 families and plan to run the project again in Our individual family sponsorships focus on providing immediate relief. We donate grain, beans, rice, and other basics, where the food can be consumed and surplus sold at the market to generate income. We also donate livestock, such as goats, which provide milk and nourishment, and are bred among participating families to multiply and sustain the benefit. Children s Welfare and Education Programs We began our Back to School program in 2012, and so far the fundraiser has helped 200 children attend school. Since 2012, an estimated $6,000 has been raised, all from private donations. As one of the world s poorest countries, Burundi faces severe challenges in providing quality, affordable education to every child. After experiencing a 12-year civil war that ended in 2005, Burundi saw many of its schools destroyed, as well as extreme teacher shortages and a lack of access to educational resources. Children in Burundi start attending primary school at seven years old. The government pays for primary school fees, but other expenses are the responsibility of parents. School uniforms, pens, shoes and books are costly, and as a result, many children don't go to school. Our annual Back to School program provides these supplies, ensuring that vulnerable children receive education. Secondary school students are also benefiting from Wings of Hope for Africa s education project. Children aged 12 to 18 can attend secondary school, but at a cost - school fees are charged to families. Wings of Hope pays for these school fees, allowing parents to send their children through this higher level of learning, without the financial burden.

Wings of Hope for Africa Back to School program, 2015 Wings of Hope for Africa also sponsors individual children. An annual donation of $250 provides school supplies, basic needs such as food, school uniform, and a health care card, which allows the child to access medical services.

Healthcare & Disease Prevention Education Programs We work to educate families in prevention of malaria, and other mosquito-borne infectious diseases. In 2012, we also began a program to buy government health care cards for vulnerable families in Buterere. Thousands of families in Burundi have little or no access to health care because they cannot afford it. The country s civil war from 1993 to 2005 had destructive consequences on the economy and the health care sector. The government s ability to invest in health care was Previous Page: Wings of Hope for Africa distributes mosquito netting as a part of an antimalaria education project

limited and medical staff was lacking and infrastructure was destroyed. Ongoing instability during that period resulted in reduced access to health care. At the same time, infectious and parasitic diseases, especially malaria, are prevalent. We work to educate families in prevention of malaria, and other mosquito-borne infectious diseases. Malaria is rated as the leading cause of childhood mortality in Burundi, with 48 percent of children under five dying of the disease prior to In 2012, we also began a program to buy government health care cards for vulnerable families in Buterere. At a cost of only $5 per card, the sponsored individuals are able to access disease management and prevention. Distribution of health cards, Wings of Hope for Africa, January 2016

Support Wings of Hope for Africa Your generous contributions keep our programs alive. When you donate to our charity programs, you are directly helping to aid and support vulnerable children and families in Burundi, Africa. With your help, we continue to support children's education, and develop co-operative projects to generate income, foster community building, and strengthen traditional methods of selfsufficiency through agriculture, or Income generating activities. With these programs, we create economic sustainability and growth, leading to reduced poverty while increasing quality of life.
